    Question on cap removal

If I use XPS foam for my stringers and coat it with PVA. Would 3 layers of 1708, chop strand, layered over the foam be strong enough? Just thinking to reduce the weight and wood content below the deck.

    Question on cap removal

That is what I was thinking. I was going to do my stringers and hull cleats (braces) first. Then remove the cap to get to the top of my transom. I need to re-glass the transom, as I did not get to the top of it very well. As it is right now I need to level out the hull between the chines and...

    Question on cap removal

The scaffolds and 2x6 will work. Did not know that I could use multiple ratchet straps. That is excellent. At the moment I am building the cradle. I plan on using 2x6 on the flat with a 2x4 on edge to support the hull. Like a T shape.

    Question on cap removal

Ok thanks, What would a 20ft bow rider cap roughly weigh? Perhaps a few Hangman scaffolds Like Chris1956 suggests would be a better idea.

    Question on cap removal

Unfortunately my trailer is a roller one. My hull is dimpled from the rollers as it is. I have been building a cradle to support the hull. I was going to use 2 engine hoists to lift the cap.

    Question on cap removal

Actually they did not touch the floor. They were just 2x2 wood pieces. It is hard to see in the photo.

    Question on cap removal

I mentioned before in my original posting of the Sunray, that I will need to replace the hull, stiffeners? Would making the stringers with these in ply also joined to the floor, make them too rigid ?

    Question on cap removal

    That would work also.

    Question on cap removal

The only reason I need to take the cap off is to get the top of the transom ground for new glass. Perhaps I should get a long neck grinder to tackle the transom top.

    Question on cap removal

Ok, the supports in my picture are not enough? Would I have to build a cradle for the hull?

    Question on cap removal

I ended up with my Sun Ray back to work on. Long story for another time. I would like to take the cap off. I have the boat off the trailer and supported on my stands. Would I need to do anything else to remove the cap?

True, But I was just looking for some insight into the build quality. But yes, almost 20 years of water use. I will bring an awl with me.

Hi all, I have sold my old project Sun Ray 20 footer. I am looking at the above titled boat. It is an 18 footer with a v6 in it. The question is are these boats of good or decent builds? I am going to look at it tomorrow and just looking for things I may need to think about. The boat is in...

    Changing colour of gelcoat question

Thank you, todhunter and MikeSchinlaub. Yes, I have worked around the tools for a fair many years, but reminders of the danger are always welcome. I have seen grinder cutting wheels shattering.

    Changing colour of gelcoat question

Thanks, last time I did not sand enough. This time, I plan on making sure the bond is good. The 7 inch is for the bedding resin, also to speed up grinding. Still chiseling out the old "new" wood stringers.

    Changing colour of gelcoat question

A little progress today. My order of 16grit disc came today. This is to grind the stringer bedding resin. What grit is good for the final pass to improve adhesion?

    Changing colour of gelcoat question

I was going to replace the little ribs running perpendicular to the stringers with plywood stringers. Now I am thinking just using 2x2 fir. Now is there any benefit to using 4lb pour in foam? I also was going to change to a bunk trailer, but my rollers are new and all hardware. Also, it is...

    Changing colour of gelcoat question

The problem I have is that the stringers are bedded with resin and milled fiber. I will get a few new sawzall blades and try. My diamond 4.5 inch disc does work to a degree.
