9.5 ignition plate alignment now wrong

Can someone post a clear photo of theirs? I can't tell a thing from that 50 yo manual. My roller is *parallel* to the edge of the cam plate. That doesn't seem right yet it doesn't look bent or out of place. The edge of the plate ends up sliding into the middle of the "U" between three roller &...

9.5 ignition plate alignment now wrong

It was in fwd for the video but the gear wouldn't affect that the cam & roller don't line up.

9.5 ignition plate alignment now wrong

While tinkering with this OB the past couple weeks I've had the timing plate off at least 3 times with no problems reassembling. THIS TIME something went sideways. The carb throttle follower now wants to roll under the cam plate. I don't know what I did different but now my throttle range is...

    Identify this motor?

You can but that lower unit on Amazon and mount any standard ww head to it. Probably why there's no labels. They're stupid cheap.

    What make fitting is this?

Hard to argue with that... 😁

Is the 60# 15hp Force the lightest manual start 2-stroke 15?

Vintage 9.5: Can you set points with a timing light?

A little. I'm a metrologist by trade. Calibrations. Accurate measurements using first principles is what I do every day. The point gap sets your ignition timing but it's a very crude process and the way most people do it doesn't involve the timing marks at all. That's what I meant by...

Vintage 9.5: Can you set points with a timing light?

So the "pointy tool method" to gap the points. I agree that will get you the best mechanical approximation of correct timing. I guess if one wants to fine-tune from there the only choice is trial & error. Now I have a better understanding why nobody bothers to go beyond approximate timing.

    Another Q about this '71 9.5hp

The next time I was able to wheel that motor out into the light I started off by pulling the gearbox plugs. A very small amount of black pudding oozed out  Today I pulled the lower & took it apart to change the impeller & inspect the gears. The impeller looked awful and I'm surprised it...

    9.5hp Johnson - what's this screw for?

What have you circled there? I've been curious if that square socket in the casting has any purpose. I've used it to crudely try to keep the flywheel from rotating when torqueing the top nut--but it feels risky.

Vintage 9.5: Can you set points with a timing light?

Can I assume from your handle that you might be a little more interested in peak performance, rather than "set it & forget it"? There's no way feeler gauges are going to get you closer than +/- 5° of rotation. Hell that TOP spot on the points cam alone is about 10° wide. The problem is I can't...

Vintage 9.5: Can you set points with a timing light?

There are timing marks on the flywheel that are useless for adjusting the points, which are hidden underneath. Why are these marks there if there's no way to adjust timing? (I'm being devil's advocate here--the point gap DOES affect timing) Is it more important that the points be set to some...

    9.5hp Johnson - what's this screw for?

I finally found a filter for a 64 that looks like it would fit the cavity at the end of that mounting boss. Still haven't seen any photos with the filter still in place. Maybe it exists only in museums now... But all year 9.5s still have that mount, from what I've seen. Want to restore a...

    9.5hp Johnson - what's this screw for?

It seems like there would be proof in the form of a photo. Or service manual drawing. I just googled about a dozen more photos and none had anything attached there. Small outboards don't normally have "options" that would require additional mounting bosses. That stuff just adds weight.

Vintage 9.5: Can you set points with a timing light?

I haven't been able to find a clear answer to this question. Almost all webpages, YouTubes and forum posts just show how to set point gap to spec but I've found a couple that mention using a timing light & the timing marks on the flywheel to verify or fine-tune each point adjustment. None have...

    9.5hp Johnson - what's this screw for?

I'm curious the purpose of this screw on my '71. Mine is loose and has some crumbly rubber under the head like it *used* to have a purpose.

    Another Q about this '71 9.5hp

I didn't think to try squeezing the primer when it started coughing & slowing down. I did notice as I was putting everything away that I had forgotten to open tank vent  I discount that as the cause because it always started right up again with some choke & 1 or 2 pulls. I do intend...

    Another Q about this '71 9.5hp

I couldn't wait any longer. I didn't clean the carb. I didn't adjust or clean the points. I didn't install new plugs. I just hooked up fuel and started it. It runs great...until it doesn't. A little bit after I stopped recording the motor slowed down a little and started misfiring a bit. Then it...
