    Another Q about this '71 9.5hp

I doubt I'm going to find 'correct' oil for this locally. I think assembly lube has all the correct properties...agree? I have a lot of lubricants on hand but most of them are at the ends of the viscosity spectrum--greases & penetrating oils.

    Another Q about this '71 9.5hp

I removed the timing plate and wiggled the cam off. Then I removed the woodruff key to inspect it. It looked ok so I just reinstalled it but tilted a little like a ramp to catch a bit more of the slot in the cam. I scraped out the 52 year old hardened grease and rubbed new marine grease on the...

How do you hold the flywheel from rotating without any risk of damaging it?

1986 50 hp johnson with VRO delete

Judging by all the responses I got when I asked this 3 years ago my assumption is they all shake like that at low speed.

    Another Q about this '71 9.5hp

I visiteded LeeRoy's website a couple days ago (is that what you meant?). SO much useful info & tips on it! I've already made a flush adapter since you can't use muffs on this motor, and my stand is too low--and this motor too heavy-- for the barrel I've used for smaller OBs. I only have a...

    Another Q about this '71 9.5hp

Soon, gentlemen. I'm doing lots of reading & various parts have been ordered... Others can wait till it's fired up. The flywheel is resisting me today. I need to bring home a big bolt for my puller. I fiddled with that low speed adjustment and that's what was preventing my grip from turning...

    Another Q about this '71 9.5hp

Bought this motor a week ago. Seller claimed it ran when put away 3 years ago and it does appear unmolested and in great condition. I'll check that low speed trim but I thought it moved the linkage--not the grip position.

    Another Q about this '71 9.5hp

Today's 'WTH?' question: The handle barely makes it to the 'SLOW' setting and won't rotate to the 'STOP' marking. It positively stops at the 'SLOW' position. Peering down through the carburetor throat it looks like the butterfly is fully closed when the handle indicates SLOW. It rotates fine...

    Johnson 9R71R stop switch

I'm ordering both types this morning. The lanyard switch appears to be long enough to extend out of the recess on the OB panel but if it doesn't I'll have the 'regular' button to install. And as said--choking works fine, too 👍

    Johnson 9R71R stop switch

Don't you think it's kind of a sexy idea to improve on the 50yo design by replacing the basic N.O. switch with a lanyard type that can do the same thing (if you pull the cord) AND offers an improvement in safety?

    Fuel line adapters?

Thanks but the last thing I want is to introduce yet another unique connector. I have a Gamefisher, Eska and a Force that all use the old Chrysler connector and 1 Johnson. Probably adding another (Evinrude) soon. Have a Johnson, Yamaha and another Gamefisher at my cottage. I feel like I need a...

    Fuel line adapters?

I thought I was succinct. Portable tank, primer bulb, hose with a fitting on the end. Adapters from that fitting to anything else I need now or in the future. I feel the Chrysler/Force fitting is the handiest for the end of the portable tank fuel line but my preferences don't matter if...

    Fuel line adapters?

I was watching some random YouTube outboard-in-a-barrel video and I noticed what looked like a short adapter from one type of fuel line fitting to another. Have these ever been made or is it something you cobble up yourself to save from purchasing several fuel lines?

    Johnson 9R71R stop switch

Just brought home a '71 9.5hp Johnson that I hope to fix up, test & use at my cottage. It seems to be complete, has good compression, spark in both cylinders. I haven't tried to start it yet--i don't have the correct fuel connector on hand. 2 things I need to address: 1 - the stop switch needs...

    Force 5hp (1990) no telltale?

My lake has a long weedy channel I like to explore. I want a reverse gear so I can spin the prop backwards to clear it.

    Force 5hp (1990) no telltale?

Yeah I wish I had noticed it had no reverse but my excitement to get the motor for $40 got me a little carried away.
