    1986 Mercury 9.8 110 outboard

The Recoil: Either the Spring has snapped, or something has jammed it, preventing it to retract. A bit of Troubleshooting needed. A Word of Warning, if the Spring is not Broken, it will be storing a lot of Energy, and can be VERY Dangerous to work on. The Link I provided in Post #6, will take...

The Recoil may have failed. When you pull the Cord, does the Flywheel turn? Or does the Cord just pull out, and then goes back in? Have you ever done a Compression Test on this motor? If yes, what were the Numbers? If no, do it and post the Numbers

A tester like the one I post a pic of, is adjustable, and puts the Ignition System to the Test. They are available on Amazon, and Evil Bay. A very large Gap is required because not much Voltage is required to jump a 0.030" Gap at Atmospheric Pressure, in the Combustion Chamber at much higher...

A spark tester like this? Don't waste your time or money on ones that are in a Bulb Don't spray Ether into a 2 Stroke, not a good idea as it ignites by compression, and there is Compression in the Crankcase too. It also can wash away Oil, very critical for the Bearings Maybe try a few drops...

Thinking about selling my 90hp 1986 Mercury inline 6

Far easier to understand how a Carb works, how to troubleshoot it, and how to adjust and/or fix it. EFI is up there with Voodoo, and other Poltergeists

1984 35hp Lower Unit Removal Trouble

You just have to remove the Bolts/Nuts that hold the Gearcase to the Exhaust Housing, and it will come apart. Don't forget about the Bolt hidden by the Trim Tab. The Upper shift Shaft stays with the Exhaust Housing, and the lower Shaft is part of the Gearcase, they are Splined in such a way...

Mercury 850 85hp. Good engine or stay away?

That design of Pump pressurizes the Cooling System to about 6 psi at 5000 rpm. Mercury's Water Pressure Gauges for the old Inline Motors, only read up to about 9 PSI. The V6s were a different matter

    1996 Merc. 40hp 2 stroke

Voltage Drop somewhere between the Up Relay and the Motor On one of my Inline 6s, there was a lot of Play, that at first looked like the it might be Swivel Bracket, turned out the Upper Motor Mounts had loosened. Powerhead had to come off to tighten and Locktite them.

    Help identifying v4 johnson

I recall that the 3/8" Line was introduced for the V6s back in late 75. The V6 Engines were 50% larger than the V4s. Looking at the Parts Lists, the Crossflow V4s all used 5/16" Hoses/Lines

    Cooling water indicator

Just to give some operators the Warm Fuzzies that the Water Pump is operating. On its late inline 6s, Mercury put the fitting to provide water for the pisser at the top of the Block, earlier inline 6s had the outlet on the Water Jacket cover between Cylinders 3 and 4
