Ohm testing a coil isn't a reliable means to measure the performance of a coil.
I've had more bad coils test good more time than I can count. The only true measure of performance is to test the output with a spark tester.
A bad cable connection doesn’t discriminate between radio checks and broadcast messages.
Having said that, VHF is line of sight communications. If you can’t see the broadcast antenna, you can’t hear broadcast.
On a typical day, you’re not going to hear anything that more than 3-4 miles away...
