    80 HP Mercury trim

Don't be surprised if the trim limit switch is bad. A lot of them break over the years.

Successful Deletion of VST, Primer, & Fuel Pump

W When you say solenoid, do you mean primer solenoid? A premix pump like you installed, is a standard solution. The Maxrules site has those kits as well as OMS pump rebuild kits. I do like the oil injection on my '98, so I opted to replace the OMS pump last year. I probably could have...

    Tilt/trim problem

Sometimes you need to "help" the motor to trim up, by grabbing it and lifting. This will bleed them as well. Just let her sit a minute all the way up to allow air to bubble out of the fluid. Usually, you fill them when tilted all the way up.

    96 Mercury 4cyl 2 stroke oil injection

My IL6 had overheat damage to #1 and #3, as it typical for that motor design. The rest of the pistons and cylinders were like new. Those IL6 motors tended to run hotter on the top cylinders, as it took more water pressure to cool them. I expect that #2 and #4 cylinders were spared due to...

    96 Mercury 4cyl 2 stroke oil injection

Generally speaking, the undamaged pistons and cylinders will look brand-new, and the damaged ones will look all torn up.

    96 Mercury 4cyl 2 stroke oil injection

You realize that an oil injection failure would affect all cylinders, right? You likely have another issue, like a clogged carb, wrong ign timing or failure in the cooling system.

Smartrail / Splash Rail for Trihull?

My neighbor had a 17" proline CC. The water would splash up along the hull like most boats, however, the bow rail would deflect the spray into your face. That was special. if it were my boat, I would have pulled the bow rail off.

Question about the 1990s era 75/80 and 90 lower unit swap to 100/115 and 125hp

If you look on the crowleymarine web site at the part numbers for the two gearcase shells, you may get an idea of what will interchange. Of course the part number of the gearcases themselves will differ if they have different gear ratios. Sterndrive Engineering (SEI) may also give some clues.

    Crazy happening in My area,.....

Gee, it reminds me of when the Brooklyn Bridge was built. The wire for the support cables did not meet the specs, so the supplier could make more profit. If the bridge inspectors had not caught it, the bridge would have collapsed. You wonder what the wire supplier was thinking.

    Rebuilding carbs

Gee, if the jets are clogged, it is not the lack of a dressing on the gaskets and orings. What shape are your fuel filters? On a related note: My B-I-L left the gasoline shutoff in the on position on his pressure washer, with a gravity feed fuel system. Over the winter all the fuel went into...

    80 HP Mercury trim

Do you have the PTT with the trim pump and reservoir in the boat? If so, you can have one or two solenoids. The UP circuit will definitely have a solenoid, but the DOWN circuit may or may not have one. I never had a solenoid go bad on that type of system, so first check the connections from...

    Just cant figure this out...

Gee, I don't do any of that. I leave the fuel line connected to the engine all winter. It is a V6 with 6 carbs, so it would be hard to drain and running it dry would be bad. My carbs are clean.....who knew?

    Just cant figure this out...

Ethanol, despite what the old wives tales say, is not bad for your fuel system. It will clean the fuel system upon first use, and that can be an issue, but once you have used it, it absorbs water in the fuel and keeps all the components clean. Modern engines use alcohol-resistant rubber...

Successful Deletion of VST, Primer, & Fuel Pump

I never heard of VST warpage. The carb bowls do warp and need to be replaced. If you power the electric fuel pump from the starter solenoid for cranking and via a relay from the voltage regulator for running, with appropriate diodes, it can be made safe. I really think you have solved a...

Successful Deletion of VST, Primer, & Fuel Pump

Gee, the VST solves the vapor lock issue and bubbles issue. In addition, the VST is simply a tank with a fuel inlet needle, just like a carb. I have never had an issue with the one on my '98. I never priced a new inlet needle and gasket for the VST, but I expect it to be cheap and available...

Successful Deletion of VST, Primer, & Fuel Pump

First of all, you do not have a fuel rail. Those supply fuel to injectors, not carbs. Secondarily, there is no reason to return fuel to the tank, unless your fuel pressure will override the carb inlet needle. Thirdly, the components you replaced last decades w/o replacement. I have a 1998...

    cupped prop question

Gee, it is pretty easy to tell if a prop is cupped. Put a straight edge in the prop blade. If it sits flat on the whole blade, there is no cup. The cup will usually be at the trailing edge of the prop blade. As for raising the RPM to 6000, I think you are changing happy to glad. I do not...

    cupped prop question

Gee, most props are cupped. Is your 14P prop cupped? if so, changing the pitch to 13P cupped prop should give you the 200RPM you want. Why are you set on 6K RPM? Your current prop would seem to be in the max RPM range already. You can likely get a 12P, which would, in theory, raise your...

Deep pitting inside water jacket on power head.

Whereas Yamaha has several anodes in the engine, I never saw the same in a Merc. Mercs have their anodes on the transom bracket and gearcase. Of course, Yammies have a habit of their cylinder heads rotting out, so that may be the reason for all the anodes. The other good news is that most...
