    Can't kill it!

Back in 1980, we had the Evinrude version of that motor. I think we had it for 15 yrs. Had it on a 14 foot car topper

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Both Reed Blocks have reeds on both sides, which is how the center cylinder would draw from both carbs

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Inline Merc of that lineage do not have a Plenum. This pic is of the top two cylinders of a inline six. The above mention 3 would have another Reed block and Carb, between the 2nd and 3rd cylinder, not that main Bearing Block.

    1987 evinrude 140hp E140tlcua

With a 4 inch drop in Pitch, it still won't go above 3000rpm. Even with a dead cylinder the revs would go up, with less pitch. I would be looking at the S.L.O.W. feature. Perhaps the temp sensor/switches are shorting, or the Wires going to them are pinched/abraded. Disconnect the Tan wires...

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

The problem with the 2 carbs for 3 cylinders is that a 3 cylinder has 120 degrees between inhalations in the induction systems. With merc's usual 2 cylinders per carb, the flow was smooth and even as the cylinders combined, inhaled 180 degrees apart. With the 2 carb for 3 cylinders, each carb...

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

It was that way because of the Design of the Reeds, Mercury had on their Production Inlines. In 76, merc did make a 650XS which had the same Bore and Stroke, and thus displacement, but it used an entirely different induction System, with Reeds on V-Blocks, and it had 3 carbs. It was rated at...

    Boat doesn't rise. Prop issue?

The 78 140 heads aren't too bad for compression, the tightest heads were on the 1973 135hp, but they are borderline on today's gasolines. FWIW, the 99.6 cu in 140, never put out more than 128 hp at the crank, but since 128hp was within the tolerance Range allowed for hp, OMC called it a 140hp.

    Boat doesn't rise. Prop issue?

the 1/3/8" carbs are bigger, than the 1 5/16" carbs, so they will flow more air, thus better top end, provided of course the Motor is configured(port timing and area, as well as Exhaust tuning) for it. Many people have stuck 140 carbs on 90hp motors, and are surprised at the drop in overall...

1978 Mercury 70hp Worth Messing With?

Hopefully you have a Factory Service Manual. If not get one, as it will have the correct procedure for the Link and Sync, as well as many other Specs and Procedures. On the last pic you posted, it shows a Hose coming from the center Crankcase, with the other end having a threaded Fitting. Any...

    Boat doesn't rise. Prop issue?

WOT range for that motor is 4500-5500. While the motor is rated 140hp at 5000rpm, the actual rpm for peak power on the 140 is closer to 5400rpm. For an 18ft boat, I would say the 19" pitch is a little high, a 17 would be a better choice. As for the lack of bow rise and plowing. I will assume...

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

looking the Owners Manual... It appear there is some control of the Headlights on the Turn Signal Switch, but an On/Off only is when the car is not running, If running, the Headlamps can be shut off in Park, but the moment it is shifted out of Park the Headlamps come on. As for a Switch for...

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

I don't even know how to turn the Headlights on on the Car. There is no switch on the dash, however, normal mode of Operation, is Auto-on, but when dawn arrives, it switches to the LED DRLs up front, then back to Headlights at Twilight.

    New Stuff on Vehicles likes/dislikes

An Update. 3yrs later, the Disabler still works fine, but it does cause the charging system to refuse to fully charge the battery. My battery, well the car's, has a State of Health, of 94% but a State of Charge of 47%. It has been that way ever since I installed the disabler, and has never...
