Questions about the set up of a Holley 4160 on a 4.3 V6

If you are pushing upwards on the Rod, you are opening the throttle

    96 Mercury 4cyl 2 stroke oil injection

IF one cylinder/piston got Hot enough to be nuked, the ones next it also likely suffered some Damage... It may have been a Cooling problem, but since the OP hasn't revealed what 4 Cylinder design it was, there is some lack of Context. The 4 Cylinder Direct Charge Blocks had 2 Carbs, so a lean...

    96 Mercury 4cyl 2 stroke oil injection

Possibly cheaper to find a used Motor, but you could end up with someone else's problem. Rebuilding yours, you would also need to find out why it lost that Cylinder, or else the rebuild is likely to end up the same. Have you used a Borescope to look in the Cylinders, or pulled the Exhaust Cover...

1986 Johnson 30hp - Vacuum lines and throttle control rod

That collar on the Linkage is the Fuel Saver. It allows full Advance of the timing, along with almost completely closed Throttle Valve. OMC has used that linkage since the late 1950s, and the adjustment procedure hasn't changed

    What parts from a ‘77 Evinrude 85 are interchangeable with a ‘73 Evinrude 115?

There is more to a Fuel Delivery Curve, than just the Jets. Are you just swapping the Bowls, or are you putting the 115 carbs on the 85hp, or vise-versa. While the both carbs use the same Gasket(rebuild) Kit, their are a lot of Differences.

    What parts from a ‘77 Evinrude 85 are interchangeable with a ‘73 Evinrude 115?

The Carbs on a 73 115hp are larger than the carbs on a 77 85hp, as the 115 has about 8-9% more displacement than the 85, and have a different Fuel Delivery Curve, based on the expected airflow, which will degrade the overall Boating Experience. Instead of a motor that responds to the Throttle...

    50 looper vs 85 crossflow

Myself, that balance would be a nice late 80s merc 135 or 150 V6. 65hp merc running 1/2 hour on 6 gallons is about what my dads 1963 40hp Johnson burned, on a 14ft boat

    50 looper vs 85 crossflow

Loopers are considered more advanced(though they have been around for just over 100 yrs), and have some advantages, but are/were more costly to manufacture. As for Mercury smaller but higher revving... OMC for many years used a 92.6 cu in Block for it's 85 HP, with a WOT range of 4500-5500...

    50 looper vs 85 crossflow

FWIW, I have never heard a Boater complain that they had Too Much Power, unless he/she put far more than the Max Rated HP on the Boat

    50 looper vs 85 crossflow

50hp from a Crossflow is the same as 50hp from a Looper. There may be slight differences in Fuel Consumption, and well as how the Engine Runs, Loopers tend to be a little Skittish at idle, while crossflows a bit smoother. Crossflows that can rev higher than the 40hp OMC, are certainly possible...

    50 looper vs 85 crossflow

The 85 will be a much better choice for any Watersport.

    50 looper vs 85 crossflow

An 18ft boat, even a tinny, is not going to be much fun with a 50hp. The 85hp will certainly be a much more enjoyable drive. Top speed difference with Identical Set Up(Engine Height, Trim Setting, Optimal Propping) will be about 7 mph. Large difference in Acceleration. Throttled back to the top...

    80 HP Mercury trim

Might be a bad Solenoid, bad connection/Wire, as the Pump does run to lower the Motor

    Last weekend at the lake

Labour Day was usually when we packed up after spending the Summer at the Lake. Did make a few Winter Trips, but by the time the Furnace had warmed the place up, it was next morning and time to head home

Questions about the set up of a Holley 4160 on a 4.3 V6

Both Carbs have their adjustability Issues. In the case of Holleys, they do sell a lot of Parts to make a lot of Recalibrations a bit easier. With Q-Jets, a very large collection of scrap Carbs can yield some of the Parts

Questions about the set up of a Holley 4160 on a 4.3 V6

When the Primary plates are in the correct location relative to the Transfer Slots, the Secondary Plate can be adjusted to attain the correct Idle Speed, a real PIA. As for a Vacuum source. Does the Carb have a Choke Pulloff? If so, once the Choke is fully open, it doesn't rely on it, and it's...
