Starting engines with jump box & dead house batteries

Anyone here know the reason the “boost” setting isn’t used to charge a battery? The same reason for not using an alternator to charge a dead battery would apply. Slamming a battery with high amperage for a few moments after a start doesn’t hurt them because it isn’t long enough for the battery...

What's the word on the street about current Mercury models?

There seemed to be a lot of Tohatsu motors used on the Swamp People show. I don’t know how many true to life rigs were used. I know most, if not all, the gator fishing was fake.

    K&N air filters......yay or nay ?

Yep, a person must follow the instructions if they want a shot at stuff working anywhere near what is advertised. Cleaning and oiling a K&N filter is not a 10 minute job.

Where were you 25 years ago today.

National Championship Air Races. I was on leave and had been notified to return to duty by the time the towers fell.

Help - Boat Accident and Insurance

This happens with aircraft all the time. Especially with older planes. The cost of an engine or replacing the fabric skin on a bird can easily exceed the market value of the package.

    stupid question - trailer lights

I talk to the local shops. They can’t match online prices but frequently come down to a difference I can stomach. No local shops, no jobs, no parts available for immediate needs, no tax money for roads, schools, hospitals…

Found a destroyed raw water impeller today.. where to start looking for the pieces?

I have seen lots of those on Volvo Penta. Never really worried about it much except for the one with the cooler. The cooler seemed to catch all of the bits.

    Convert trailer for inboard use

The boat looks heavy on the hitch to me. It might be worth trying to slide it back a little but, as others have pointed out, you have to have weight on the hitch. Towing without enough weight on the hitch is not fun and can be dangerous.

    Convert trailer for inboard use

There appears to be quite a difference between your trailer and the ones they are trying to sell you. The rear crossmember looks closer to the axles. If it is only hitting the roller, could the roller be removed? My trailer has a roller there but I don’t think the boat has ever touched it.

    Servicing my trailer bearings

The dust cap or bearing buddy provides the seal on the front. That’s why those rubber pieces need replaced on the caps used with axles having zerk fittings when they deteriorate or tear. I just install standard caps since I don’t use the zerk fittings

    Servicing my trailer bearings

Personally, I would not fill the hub if there is no zerk fitting. I don’t use the zerk fitting even if there is one. I do spread some grease around for corrosion control but, to me, filling the hub is just wasting grease. I put extra grease between the bearing and the seals on boat trailers to...

    K&N air filters......yay or nay ?

I like K&N filters but feel 2 are needed because the cleaning and oiling process takes a considerable amount of time. It’s nice to have one ready to go in when the time comes.

i'm in a fairly serious pickle...

I would take the 2 bigger eggs in the lower corners. Otherwise, I tend to pull eggs in the order that keeps the carton best balanced for me to take it out of the fridge with one hand.

    stupid question - trailer lights

Not bad advice. I swap them out as they fail {if ain’t broke don’t fix it}. The fixtures usually seem to be bad enough swapping the bulb is a waste of time. I have even encountered a couple on boat trailers that refused to let go of the old bulb. Some moron at the factory wired my new enclosed...

    Servicing my trailer bearings

I almost never wipe a bearing with a towel or rag. I typically clean my bearings in a can of mineral spirits, sometimes use gasoline, by letting them soak a little bit then using a brush to knock loose any grease that doesn’t want to rinse off. Then I slosh them around until I can see through...

    Electric car.

I have made five 1,000 trips dragging a trailer in the 2 months. Probably have at least five trips remaining. That is two ten hours days stoping only for fuel and restroom. Gas is killing us at 10 mpg but I think waiting for a vehicle to charge would be worse.

    Electric car.

The problem I see with electric cars is the costs of battery replacement can easily exceed the value of the vehicle. That is why the electric vehicles decrease in value so fast. Leasing would be the better option if a person plans on getting a new car every few years anyway. Personally, I like...

    Are Yamaha fuel filters universal?

Correction: my bad experience with the parts counter happened at the Honda dealer. I let him verify my part numbers then he sold me the wrong filters. He blamed it on Honda’s parts system. Yamaha hasn’t been a problem.

    stupid question - trailer lights

The only thing I can think of for fragile is the wiring or, depending on how it is wired, possibly the fixtures in the car may not be sufficient enough to handle the extra draw a trailer could put on it.
