    Removing Spiders

The dock owners were hiring a crew to spray a few times during the summer. I could never tell that it did any good as compared to the years they didn’t spray. No clue what the product was.

    Last weekend at the lake

My wife and I both fish. Nearest boat ramp is about 3 miles but the only time we have been on the lake all year was to troubleshoot one of the club boats. I think we maybe got out twice last year. Before I retired I had the boat out almost every Sunday April though October and occasionally...

    Ethanol!

I think this is the first time I have ever seen a claim that E10 helps keep a carb clean. My experience is exactly the opposite unless wanting to remove some water from a fuel system. The only fuel system problems I have had on my boat were E10 related. I have been told premium doesn’t have...

I’m not familiar with that product. I keep a small tub of Vaseline in the shop.

    Retirement Financial Planing

My truck is a 2008. Wife’s car is a 2014. No plans for swapping them out. I paid off the truck in 2010 but kept sending the payment to a saving account. The balance has grown slowly because, after the truck was paid off, I pay our insurance bills from that account. About 6 years ago I moved...

    Are Yamaha fuel filters universal?

I didn’t know that. The database is a little suspect anyway, either that or a local dealer has no clue how to look up parts. I tend to fare better if I walk in with the part numbers than I do giving them the serial number.

    Rebuilding carbs

I use petrolatum or the fluid the o-ring will be exposed (gasoline isn’t a good lube) to on nearly every o-ring I install. Oil and gas wash away any excess without any harm to anything or fear of plugging any passages. Lubricated o-rings have less of a tendency to get pinched or rolled/twisted.

    Retirement Financial Planing

My wife wants to collect SS as soon as she becomes eligible next year. I think she should hold off. Her money, her choice. I intend to wait until mine maxes out. It won’t be a lot either way. Unless something has changed, 20 years of my payments into it cannot be collected from. That pretty much...

Burning valves and melting spark plugs 5.7 efi

I agree with your thoughts about it going lean at high rpm. The kink in the fuel line could easily cause it. I don’t think a water temperature gauge or warning system would catch it (depends on where the sender is located). Oil temp might spike but maybe too late. Only a cylinder head...

    Pontoon defect (blemish?) on log

I agree with it being a material defect. I like to follow the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mantra so I wouldn’t mess with it as long as it isn’t leaking. A welder could run a bead along it which could be ground and polished so it doesn’t show much.

    Retirement Financial Planing

Works great if there was a 401K to deposit money into. I have never held a job that offered one. Never really held a job where I grossed much over $50K a year either but managed to retire thanks to a modest pension plan. Not much left over after the bills are paid but we don’t need much. I have...

    Are Yamaha fuel filters universal?

In a duplicate thread I qualified my response with none I have worked are salt water motors. The 2011 here is a TXR so once again I will repeat, part numbers must be checked against the serial number. It not enough to google “yamaha Fxxx fuel filter”.

    Are Yamaha fuel filters universal?

Must know the correct part number for the model and serial number before ordering anything. The parts diagrams are available for free all over the internet. That link lists the F150. I have worked on the 2011 and newer F150’s for the last 5 years and have yet to see that filter.

    Retirement Financial Planing

I like the concept but I spend much less time on the boat now that I retired than I did when I was working 14 hours a day, 6 days a week.

    Sand Ingestion - DP-SM

I pulled the exhaust off a Mercruiser a couple of years ago. There was zero chance the sand packed in there was coming out by flushing alone. It would take more water and pressure than the sea water pump can muster. A garden hose can’t move that much water.

Yamaha SX200 fuel filter replacement universal?

The listing linked shows the F150 but I haven’t seen that filter on any of the ones I have worked (none are saltwater). Does the part number on the listing match the OEM part number you need? Parts diagrams are generally available online for free if you don’t know the correct part number.

    cupped prop question

If you go past the power curve you waste fuel. I see with my boat, my truck and my airplane. Staying on top of the power curve will cost speed but save fuel. I haven’t crunched the numbers for the Yamaha F70 but my truck gets 15-17 mpg at 75 mph, 20-21 at 65 mph. The boat acts the same way.

    cupped prop question

Fuel efficiency takes a pretty big hit when max torque falls off as well.

    Mismatched surge brake components

I don’t know weight range of your boat but it seems like a lot of 21’ and smaller ski boat owners and most pontoon boat owners around here just disable the system rather than repair them. I know of a couple that were disabled simply because the owners couldn’t back them into the yard without the...
