BEWARE of Faulty 87290A4 Thermostat Housing sold on Amazon!

I have a few GLM parts for my Cobra because frankly there is no more OEM for some items but for critical parts like manifolds I use Barr Marine and for a stat housing I use OMC or Volvo (same part). I don’t like Amazon for automotive or marine parts. I use marine engine . com for OEM and decent...

VP drive failed again ... 3rd replacement

That sounds like some VP mumbo-jumbo making an excuse for a flawed painting process.

    Quadrajet Replacement Options

Since you have a Merc rigged engine and Merc used the Weber 4bbl after Rochester quit making Quadrajets keep in mind the Weber & the Edelbrock are functionally the same. In fact I read somewhere that Weber actually makes the Edelbrock for them. Meaning that adapters for the throttle linkage...

Tinkering on the 4.3l this winter...

I think in your size/weight boat you'll be happy with the 4bbl. Keep it simple, less possibly for problems down the line. Think about stepping up to the Mercruiser/Quicksilver 25/50 syn blend oil. I think it tests out better than 15w/40s on UOAs from what I have seen as far as holding its...

How easy is it to replace the seals on a 50 hp Johnson trim/tilt myself

You can use heat on the end of the cylinder and then force the pins into the cap as much as you can when turning the pin wrench with a ratchet.

How easy is it to replace the seals on a 50 hp Johnson trim/tilt myself

I did that job on my old Cobra drive this past spring, the tough part is getting those caps off, if you can do that, the rest of the job is pretty easy. BRP still sells the seal kit for the Cobra drives, it could even be the same thing for the outboards but I don't know for sure. I had a spare...

lifter issue and rock arm registration

Did you blow compressed air through each pushrod? I might crank it over with the ignition disabled till you see oil reaching all 12 rocker arms…just crank it for like 10 sec, then let the starter cool, repeat etc.

    Bilge Pump Upgrade

In addition to maintaining/upgrading bilge pumps, anyone with an I/O or inboard should always check ALL cooling hoses at the start of each season, for tightness and condition. I had a cooling hose between the transom mount and the P/S cooler (tough to get at) pop off some years back, that caused...

    Boats from work.

That's the problem with 'glass boats, you always wonder if the one you are buying was built right in the first place, sometimes it takes years to find that out!

Key West & Pioneer also use that method of construction

    Boats from work.

that's quite scary, looks like the boat must have taken on a lot of water that's why any future boat I own will be full foam filled and outboard powered

5.7 Cast Iron Intake Manifold - Salt (‘raw’) Water Cooled

Forgot to add that I use an inspection camera to check for internal leaks in the manifold to elbow gasket. This saves a lot of time if you have no sign of leaks from the outside…

5.7 Cast Iron Intake Manifold - Salt (‘raw’) Water Cooled

Same I also do a compression test & oil analysis. If there’s sodium in the oil from salt water cooling you’ll know it that way for sure.

    Puffing steam out vents

I definitely didn’t have to retorque the ones on my pre Vortec; the gaskets seem to be high quality; I think the bigger thing is that you have to clean out the cylinder head bolt holes in the block (thread chaser) and really clean the threads of the head bolts. Mine were rusty so I would up...

    Volvo penta 5.0gxi 3869255

I know from checking a crank position sender on another engine (Jeep 4.0 six) there is a way you can check for power and ground at the connector with the engine off but ignition on, and if you have a scanner that can read live data you can see the actual signal that the sensor is sending to the...

5.7 Cast Iron Intake Manifold - Salt (‘raw’) Water Cooled

If you're concerned you can always remove the intake and check it more thoroughly by looking at the water ports, often you start to get some pitting there, but if you use a bit of Permatex Aviation in those spots when you install the gasket, it will seal, at least in my experience.

5.7 Cast Iron Intake Manifold - Salt (‘raw’) Water Cooled

What I’ve seen around here looking at a number of I/O boats for sale is that very few have closed cooling. Nearly all are raw water cooled yet most seem to have at least a 10-15 year lifespan if not longer as long as the exhaust which deteriorates faster is replaced on time. Ive said many times...

5.7 Cast Iron Intake Manifold - Salt (‘raw’) Water Cooled

It's a bit of a gamble but you can poke at the intake right under where the thermostat sits and see if it's getting weak there with a lot of peeling flaking rust. I take a small hammer and a screwdriver and tap at it to see if it sounds solid. And, while you'll get a lot of debate on this topic...
