5.7 Cast Iron Intake Manifold - Salt (‘raw’) Water Cooled

You have to use the intake that matches your head design; pre Vortec heads require the pre Vortec intake. 12 bolts instead of the 8 bolts on the Vortec and the pre Vortec used the exhaust crossover. They may not be made new but can be easily found used. I found a few good ones for my 4.3 pre...

5.7 Cast Iron Intake Manifold - Salt (‘raw’) Water Cooled

If you're referring only to the intake, I have one on my 4.3 which has been on it the whole time I've owned it in salt water in my use since 2002. Not flushed during the season ever, it is a moored boat so full of salt water from May-November every year. Still hasn't rotted through yet. But I do...

    Do I need a trailer?

I have had the same experience, mine is a 31 year old Load Rite, I checked inside the frame rails and crossmembers with an inspection camera and it looks fine in there. I changed the tongue about 15 years ago and the axle and springs have been replaced with heavier duty parts. Mine goes in the...

Yep I had very good luck with the Cobra. I’ve also got a spare drive that I’m going to get rebuilt; the original which was last resealed in 2006 is still shifting fine…

    Puffing steam out vents

PS that boat looks like new for a 1984 Freshwater must be a treat Nothing lasts like that here in the salt pond My boatyard guys are amazed I'm still running an '88 Cobra, that has sat in salt water every summer since I bought it 23 years ago. The only parts needing replacement due to salt use...

    Do I need a trailer?

CE Smith sells a nice put-it-together yourself galvanized trailer for small boats, if I wanted one for my 10' Walker Bay that's what I'd buy, because the only thing that lasts here is galvanized....

Just rebuilt the trim cylinders, now the outdrive won't stay up under load

https://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0985060 this is the kit I used, it is for all the Cobra trim cylinders, in the early years of the Volvo SX they used the same exact trim cyl and then they changed the body of the cyl so that the rear fitting doesn't have the trim...

Just rebuilt the trim cylinders, now the outdrive won't stay up under load

Ok watched the vid out of curiosity, the kit used has a different seal than what was used on the OEM and is different than the BRP kit I used on the Cobra (OEM), there is one big red seal taking the place of 1 oring and 2 plastic spacers. Not sure if that makes a difference here or not. But, you...

Just rebuilt the trim cylinders, now the outdrive won't stay up under load

There is a trick to installing those to protect the seals, in the instructions for the kit I used on my Cobra it showed how to use an alu can to make a guard to protect the seals….I’ll see if I can find a pic

Ohhh I misunderstood the time frame there; that vid was from before you did the cyl head work! Well the engine did look really pretty good maybe you caught it at the beginning of a head gasket leak. Well keep running it; based on my experience as long as your sealing surfaces were clean & level...

    Puffing steam out vents

Well your air pressure test was good, right? Now before this happened did this engine consume oil at all? You can expect some blow by from an engine used in this application because there is no PCV to pull the vapors out. Now really thinking about it, you MIGHT still have moisture in the oil...

    Puffing steam out vents

That doesn’t look good….a lot of blow by. I’d do a compression test and a leak down test. What’s the oil look like?

That’s great work! Fortunate outcome! Just keep an eye on it during your first few runs. The Chevy small block is very forgiving because of simple design and good basic engineering.
