those are screw in rocker studs instead of the earlier pressed in rocker studs. look at his pix again, there is no shoulder under the rocker arms.

GM changed the rockers in later production, look back at the pix I posted, you can see that the rockers appear to have needle bearings. However, that is what Michigan Motors supplies in their reman engines, it's possible that the later style design can be used on the early engines that came with...

How many very new 4 stroke engines will be running trouble free at age 50 to 75 years old ?

Small block Chevrolets, Fords and Mopars are probably the best designed engines for long life and easy of repair, ever. I also love the AMC designed 4.0 liter six in older Jeeps, I have had one of those for 27 years....

And the rocker arms themselves are different, the ones you have are for the adjustable system.

And the reason why the small block Chevy will still be around? aftermarket support Just like I can still get any part I need for a 4 bbl Quadrajet even though it hasn't been produced in 30 years!

This is right from my OMC shop manual and remember it’s a GM engine whether it’s Merc OMC or Volvo. For your adjustable valve train this is how it’s done and if it doesn’t seem right either the pushrods or lifters are wrong for the engine or something’s wrong with the lifters…and DON’T forget...

lifter issue and rock arm registration

If the way I am saying to adjust them does not work, then the only conclusion that I can come to here is that you have either the wrong pushrods, or wrong hydraulic valve lifters for the engine and cylinder heads that you have. That's the adjustable valve train, it should be as I'm saying not...

with the old style adjustable you have to do the zero lash and either 3/4ths or 1 turn depending on whose spec you are using.

Alldodge good point on the self locking nuts. All of those should be replaced for the adjustment to hold.

Remember the engine serial # is at the front of the block the casting # is at the rear. It’s also possible that someone put an earlier set of heads on that engine.

Ahh you definitely have the adjustable valve train on that engine but are following the procedure for the non adjustable valve train or so it seems. Now why you have the adjustment valve train? Well the Romulus engine plant didn’t switch to net lash till 1995 you might have an early engine from...

And from what I was able to find, of the 2 plants making 4.3s, the Tonawanda NY plant (this is where the industrial and marine engines came from) switched to the net lash system in '92, whereas the Romulus Mi. plant didn't switch till '95, and when the change was made, the base circle was...

OK I don't want to add more confusion here but on these engines besides all the other changes like no balance shaft/balance shaft, and pre-Vortec/Vortec heads, there is also this: adjustable valve train net lash valve train (non adjustable) I'm not sure what year they changed from adjustable to...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Yep I'm not sure where I read that, but it does make sense. The other thing that really helps the older you get is a drive jack to get the height just right, so much easier on your back!
