New boat owners leaving the hobby

It's not surprising given the price of purchase and running & storage costs. I went to the Long Island Boat Show at the Nassau Coliseum and the bottom of the market is nearly gone. I saw 2 18' center consoles I would consider, everything else is way too expensive, if buying new.

    Puffing steam out vents

It is possible but hard to say... on mine what I found was that there was water in the 2 front cyls, #1 and #2, and I found a split in the fire ring of the head gaskets that were for those cyls, and the split was right near a water passage. So water got into the cyls (not enough to hydrolock but...

    Puffing steam out vents

Your engine pix don't look bad at first glance but look at the area between cyls 4&6 that looks a little suspicious for head gasket failure. I would like to see the block after cleaning off the old gasket and the cyl heads. If the block deck looks good, I'd probably get the heads magnafluxed and...

    Puffing steam out vents

Here's what I'm taking about, I removed the rubber exhaust hoses and the 90* exhaust pipes and fed an inspection camera wand into the exhaust opening and looked inside since they have been used in salt water for 5 seasons at this point. I plan on doing it at the end of each season to catch a...

    Puffing steam out vents

I use an inspection camera to scope the inside of the elbow and manifold to make sure water isn't leaking in, it's nice to not have to take it all apart to find that out.

    Puffing steam out vents

If you have an inspection camera I’d look inside the elbow and see if there sign of water leaking around the joint between the manifold & elbow. What about your intake gaskets? Any chance they were leaking? Any overheats during the past few seasons? I had that problem and 3 seasons later had...

Bolts for water pump are rusting

Years back when I still had the OMC V6 batwing exhaust manifolds, the drain plug was strategically located guess where? Right over the starter. So when I used to drain them I put a plastic bag over the starter to keep it from getting drenched. My later model 2 piece OMC/Volvo units have the...

Bolts for water pump are rusting

I've been spraying mine with either Boeshield, Corrosion X or Fluid Film for 22 years, in all salt water, the tin oil pan and timing chain cover are still in good shape! Also, very important, make sure there are no small water leaks from hoses, or drain plugs, that can cause a lot of rust that...

    New exhaust manifold advice

Agreed on never buying a cat converter motor. A relative of mine had one, here in the salt pond and I convinced him to trade it before it had problems and buy an outboard powered version of the same boat. He'll be far happier with it. For a simple comparison you can buy a complete exhaust for...

Lubricating starter motor shaft 5.0 MPI

Those of us in salt water MIGHT do that every so often, due to corrosion caused by salt air but even for me, unless there's a problem I leave it be... When I have done it I use a thick marine grease like Triple Guard or Lucas Marine

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

If your grease witness marks are uniform but you have to force it that much to get it on, I'm wondering if the gimble bearing isn't fully seated in the housing.

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

The problem with misalignment is the rubber damped coupler, it will put uneven forces on the coupler which will overheat and wear the rubber out and that will result in having to pull the engine. My boat is going on 37 years old, it is on the original coupler, the gimble bearing has been...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

I can't remember which forum it was on, but a few years back, there was a guy who had a boat that could not be aligned, no matter what. Eventually what was found was that the boat was built wrong, the engine mounts were out of line with the outdrive opening, so the drive and engine had to be...

lifter issue and rock arm registration

When I did mine, I didn't take the lifters apart since they were working fine before I took the heads off (blown head gaskets, cracked cyl heads from a past overheat) and I inspected each one visually, and just put it back in the bore it came from. When I reassembled the engine it was about 4...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

glad the crowfoot worked for you but I think it's still off. My engine was last aligned in....2004....I have not had to change it...since....the tool goes in very easily, no need to force it and I hope it stays like that What do the witness marks look like on the tool? Here's mine.....

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Got it from Stumpy's Fab Works. Yes it does have height adjustment, makes it very easy. You know I have never had trouble getting the drive back on as long as I have the height correct and I use the screwdriver to turn the driveshaft to line up the splines. I don't have to force it, kick it none...

Rubberized or Epoxy undercarriage roll on for salt water trailer?

Agreed any rubberized coating will allow water to get underneath it. The only thing that might buy some time is coating it inside & out with something like Fluid Film. Here the only thing that lasts is galvanized or aluminum. I have a 1994 Load Rite that’s still solid. Any little spots I touch...
