'71 Merc 80hp idles, planes boat but no top end

I used the motor last summer and it starts up great, idles fine and will plane my 16' Starcraft out and top speed has been around 29-32mph. I didn't run the motor too much since I knew it had issues. After testing compression last night I might be willing to invest some cash to get it running...

    '09 Starcraft Freedom...'96 Starcraft 17' Superfisherman

My dad is looking at this rig, just posting some photos to check out. She's a '96 Superfisherman 17' rig with a 1996 75hp Merc.

    1996 75hp Merc known issues?

My dad is looking at a boat that comes with a '96 75hp Merc. From what I have found out researching it seems like they are 3 cylinder, carburated, 2-stroke with VRO injection. He is probably going to sell the motor so we want to make sure we know what we are dealing with. I am curious if these...

looking at a '72 Chieftain and '83 Islander

There's a tempting big piece of tin I've driven past on the way home from my son's school. I've been posting in the "nearly free starcraft" thread about her and finally got some photos. She is a 1983 Islander, Mercruiser I/O (unknown block size), she's been well-used as a fishing rig and her...

    Social Security withholding

My company just informed us that the percentage withheld for SS is being decreased by about 1/3 of the previous rate. Does anyone know what's going on with this? Anyone else have this happen at all? Not sure if we can talk about this and not be political but I figured I'd give it a shot.:)

    1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration

Re: 1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration Very nice work, and always great to get the family involved as well:D Did you have any trouble with the mandrels sticking in the hand tool? I've had a few problems with mine.

Well it seems to be official...

For the first time since I've been alive, Starcraft does not appear to be manufacturing the Islander in any size. I think they started with the line in '68 or something, NB will correct me when he checks this thread:) Which should make all of those Islander owners out there happy to have...

    1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration

Re: 1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration When you rebuild a boat you really rebuild it:D Nice work. I think you may qualify for a new hull ID # when you are done with all that new aluminum.

Correct lifting ring for '72 Merc 800?

Will this work on my 1972 Mercury 80hp outboard? (link removed) The price is right...but I fear the part is wrong for a '72. Thanks for any insight. The seller does not provide very much info so it is difficult to tell if it would work.

Some good news in boat manufacturing

http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/11/23/820720/nc-boat-makers-expand.html It's nice to see some expansion out there after all the cutbacks and layoffs.:) Donzi, Baja, Fountain and Pro-Line are built by the firm. It mentions that aluminum boats and anything under 30' have been selling well recently.

    2011 Great Lakes region meetup

This has been discussed by some of us that live here in paradise(for 4 months out of the year;)) aka Michigan and I thought it was about time to get a thread going. I am open to whatever folks want to do for this event. The Inland Waterway has been thrown out there as a possible location. The...

    1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration

Re: 1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration I think the fact that your hull is made of thicker gauge aluminum should help a lot as far as warping from blasting goes. Since Bret was happy with how his turned out I'm sure he can handle your boat too. My only concern would be getting...

    1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration

Re: 1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration wfralpacas actually towed his Ski Champ up here to southern Michigan to have it media blasted. I forget how much he paid but I think it was near Coldwater or Battle Creek. It's probably in his thread, there was a photo of the guy's truck w/...

Spar Varnish over Epoxy Resin for UV protection?

I'm considering brushing on a few coats of marine spar varnish on my epoxy-sealed transom wood(3/4" exterior ply w/ 2-3 coats of 2-part epoxy). This is for my 12' aluminum boat "The Loon" and I just need some UV inhibitors to protect the resin from what I understand. Any thoughts or experience...

    1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration

Re: 1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration Wow those 22 footers are built like a tank:D The extra stringers and extra riveted pieces on the seams add lots of strength. This is the first V5 hull I've seen on a 22' from the inside. Nice work on the transom, looks like you'd have room for...

    1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration

Re: 1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration I left my snaps in place because I too, hope to someday get some new canvas made to fit the rig. I'm thinking that we can maybe make a bow cover, and then bite the bullet and pay for full enclosure for the helm and stern. I figure if I replace...

    Feisty October Northern Pike

Went out yesterday on my 12 footer to chase Pike on the Looking Glass river, and couldn't believe how much action we got in 2 hours of daylight. 7 fish from 21-29 inches and boy were they aggressive.:D(the bigger ones are in there somewhere so we are heading back out) Also landed a largemouth...

Starcraft aluminum boats with no rivets

http://www.starcraftstarweld.com/ No, they are not discontinuing the riveted hulls, just branching out to compete with Crestliner is my take on this.:) I like the ones with rivets;)

The first review of the SuperSport-V hull

I had to post this, very neat article from 1967. It's a review from Popular Mechanics after test-driving the '68 16' SS-V. The very minor, straw-grasping critical points made by the author are exactly my feelings having enjoyed using my '79 SS 16 all summer. The shift handle on my Mercontrol...
