Re: Louvered breather direction
I have a 23' Formula. I have one set of vents facing forward on each side for inhaling and 2 vents on the stern for exhaust. These pics were taken at the beginning of the restoration project but you get the idea. I've never had a problem with water intrusion with...
Re: First boat, Her final journey
Sorry to see it go. The best boats are the old boats. So many great memories. We kept my dad's MFG until it literally disintegrated. I feel your pain!
Re: Complete newbie...jumping right in.
Good point. another thing to look for is called "double decking. That is where someone has a soft spot or two to hide lays down another piece of plywood over the bad one like the below picture.
Here someone put down another piece of wood over what...
Re: Complete newbie...jumping right in.
It could be nothing but the owner said he did all the maintenance himself yet left the lower unit lube change to a mechanic. Thats one of the easiest jobs there is out of all of them. When you take a look at the boat, try to get a list from him of the...

It sounds like you might be looking for something in the 18-21 foot range. Now is a good...
Re: Weight of a '88 4 cyl Mercruiser with I think a alpha 1
To answer you as gently as I can... I think it would be a VERY bad idea to try to do what you are thinking about. I am very familiar with MFG's as we owned one like this for years:
Your particular boat is simply not designed for...
Re: New here - 1961? MFG owner
We used to have an old Edinboro like this one that my Dad bought new. Lots of happy memories in it. Those were great boats and well worth restoring:
Re: 1964, 16 foot, MFG w/ 25 hp Mercury
We used to have a 16 foot MFG like this one:
The original engine was a 50 hp and that was fine but only because it was a 4 cylinder and had lots of grunt. when we replaced the motor with a newer 2 cylinder 50 hp it was barely enough to get up and plane...
Re: Big man pedistal seats
Here is a Veada seat for $309:
and a Todd seat for $1,350. The Todd seat weighs 150 lbs. (that is one solid seat!!!)
I used to weigh 265 and have had a Todd seat (not the one pictured) in my boat for 22 years with no problems. They are unbelievably solid but you...
Re: 23ft boat offshore advice?
If you don't have to worry about maintenance cost then the circa late 1970's Formula 23' model F-233C is a great choice. It weighs approximately 5,900 lbs dry with one engine and 6,500 dry with twins. It is a great all around boat for fishing, skiing or just...
Re: 1984 Sea Ray Amberjack SRV245 Restore Project
I agree. when I did my 1976 Formula over i left off all the striping except the main one on top. It does make it look more modern.
Re: Manifold Replacement
If... and its a big If your bolts aren't rusted in solid it really isn't a complicated job. Just time consuming. First drain the water from the block so when you remove the manifolds no water flows into the engine. Then remove the Exhaust elbows on top of the manifolds...
Re: To fresh water cool or raw water cool???
Tail Gunner, I have the Plus-Series (remanned) 300 hp MPI's about to go into the boat. Here is the 1 year warranty from the Merc website. They gave me an additional 2 years for a total of 3 years:
Re: Greetings!
I've had my 1976 23' formula for 25 years, refurbished and re-powered it twice and would never part with it, but i'd give almost anything to get my dad's 1959 17' MFG back. They're such great boats. You are sooooooo lucky!
Re: To fresh water cool or raw water cool???
Thanks Mark for the excellent idea. The only problem is I have a 4x8 stringer running right down the middle of the engine compartment and not enough room to run a water hose over it and under the engine. It's a shame because 1 hole is always better...
I am installing 2 new Mercruiser Plus-Series 300 hp MPI complete power packages in a fully restored 1976 23 foot F-233c Formula. I will be operating the boat exclusively in salt water (new england area) and it will only be in the water on the days that I actually use it. I would like to be able...
Does anyone have any experience, knowledge or feedback about the durability and/or any problems that exist in the 350 Plus Series fuel injected Mercruiser sterndrive vs. that of a brand Mercruiser new engine?
