    1959 Gale Buccaneer 12 HP

I have a 1959 Gale Buccaneer 12hp that I'm going to be starting in the next week or so. My Uncle bought it new in 1959. He's since passed and was with my sister for a number of years and now I have it. It's been kept inside for most of it's life. I found a manual online and it says to use...

    1976 Mercury 650- Bogs Down a little

So I took this outboard for a run this past weekend. This is the first time I've had this on a run since the three years I've owned it. A few weeks I removed the carbs, cleaned them, replaced gaskets, needle a seats, and reinstalled them. I put it on muffs and gave it a Sea Foam treatment. I let...

    1976 Merc 650- Carb Cleaning

So I took the carbs off of my 650 to clean them. I ordered carb kits, gaskets, sea foam, needle and seat, a few other gems from iboats. I've sprayed the carbs with carb cleaner already and wiped them down. I didn't see any noticeable dirt, is there something particular I should be looking for...

1976 Merc 650-Pros and Cons to Rebuild

So, I've been doing some research and getting prices on rebuilding my 3 cylinder 650. I do hear a lot of negatives in wasting money on these motors. So I decided to come here where I've got a ton of help from you Merc pros before. Any input is appreciated. One thing I did hear is that these...

1977 Mercury 850- water in all cylinders

So I tried to go for a run on Saturday but the old Merc wouldn't fire up. I brought it back home and pulled the plugs out. All four have a water/oil sludge. It really has me puzzled. I can understand 1 cylinder or even 2, but all four? I'm guessing I have a crack somewhere. Any thoughts??? I...

    1977 Mercury 850- Coil issues?

So I think my gas issue is fixed but I'm still having issues as far as motor still stumbling a little when speeding up, and motor just quit running after a bit of time running. So, I'm wondering about the coils. I have two blue coils and two orange. Is this the norm? I'm wouldn't think so. So I...

1977 Mercury 850- Lower Unit grinds in reverse

I'm looking for some input on this issue. In reverse, the lower unit grinds like it's going in and out of gear. It grinds loud, then soft, loud, then soft. Very weird. In forward, no issue at all. I know that the PO replaced the impeller before he sold this to me, so I'm wondering if he...

    1977 Mercury 850- Choke Solenoid

So the plunger in my choke solenoid was missing. I was lucky enough to be able to use the plunger from my Merc 650, same part number. However, I can't get the solenoid to engage when key is on and button is pushed. I even turned the engine over and pressed the choke, still nothing. Any...

First time running in a long time- 1977 Mercury 850

So I got my Merc started today. It fired up quite easily. It does run rough and won't idle. I included a couple of videos of it running. I also included a picture of the idle stop adjustment. Should it be resting up against this or not. I should take the carbs off and clean them. I've never done...

Water in gear oil-1977 Merc 850

I was going to change my lower unit lube and I see that I have water in the oil. Could you great Merc gurus tell a fella where all the seals/gaskets are. I believe there is a rubber seal at the prop shaft? And probably around the Impeller?...Any help is appreciated.

Let's go Boating they said, it will be fun they said.

This happened 30 minutes from here in Dartmouth NS. I'm not sure what happened but I do know it was a brand new truck. I wonder when standing around the water cooler on Monday morning what he says when someone asks, ''So, how was your weekend?''

    1977 Mercury 850 Questions

I am looking for a lower unit for my 850.It's not that this one has any major issues but I noticed when I bought it that there was a bit of a grind in reverse, like it wasn't going all the way into reverse. I was thinking that the easy way is to pick up another lower unit and throw it on. My...

    1977 Merc 850 Midsection

I have a 1977 Mercury 85 hp outboard. It has the transom clamps on the midsection. I was lucky enough to find a working power trim for this and it came with the entire midsection of the engine along with the exhaust housing. It came off a 1982 Merc 80/90/115 style outboard. It is a direct change...

    Boat Abuse Pics

I thought I would post this picture as an example of why someone could not take care of their boats better than this. I know most of us have a lot of pride with our boats and those of us who rebuild their craft, I think, have that much more pride and take care of our boat. Feel free to post...

    1977 Mercury 850

I have a couple of before and during pictures. I'm hoping to have the after pics this weekend. The motor now has a fresh paint job and is...
