1956 Johnson 30 HP RD-18 No Start Help

You are barking up the wrong tree, looking for wet plugs. They shouldn't be wet. Wet plugs suggest flooding. 1956 30hp Johnsons have two very common problems. The ignition coils are shot from age unless they have already been replaced. Second common problem is a destroyed powerhead from...

    AD-10 Shifter Replacement

Powerhead must be removed (7 screws #23). Then remove screw 25 & washer 26 from inner shift lever (#33). Now you can pull the old broken one straight out (catch washer # 29). WARNING! attempting to shift with screw #25 removed may result in breakage of inner lever #33. Replace everything in...

    1968 Johnson FD-16A

AA++++ on above. It most likely has bad coils, as will most all 1960,s vintage Johnson twins unless they have already been replaced. Yeah, I know, has good strong spark, blah, blah, etc. You aren't the first pro (or otherwise) mechanic to be fooled by this and won't be the last.

    Serial number look up

It would be easy if it were truly a Johnson motor. But 0088208 is a typical Evinrude serial number. Means very little without the rest of the number (model number precedes the serial number)

69 hydroelectric johnson 60hp. Starts in reverse.

Check post#2. Those motors can actually RUN backwards. The anti-reverse spring prevents that, and is subject to wear (a regular maintenance item)

    Scraped bottom

Mfr's say to lock it down for control. They have a built-in release mechanism that will automatically release the lock if you run aground. Hey, if you hit a solid rock at 30mph, you probably will bust something from the impact, locked or not.

    Telltale on lower unit?

Normal, normal, normal. It is a drain hole.

1961 Johnson RDSL23 CAM ROLLER ADJUSTMENT WHEN THE THROTTLE SHAFT JUST BEGINS TO MOVE

Sorry, that example is not correct for a RDS. Look for an upward pointing pointer on the intake manifold. The throttle butterfly should just barely be ready to start to open when the mark on the cam aligns with the pointer, NOT with the roller. Note, the siding rod linkage on the side is a...

No Spark on plugs unless this wire disconnected

And therein lies the problem, I think. Without digging into the details, I think that motor requires a fairly unusual cable with yellow ends because it has both HydroElectric Shift and CD Ignition.

1962 Evinrude 5.5 fisherman bogs stalls when I put the hood on.

Running it on a boat or in a barrel? If in a barrel, get it out of there and onto a boat where it was designed to run. Or stick your head down in that barrel and take a snort of that smoke and you will realize the problem.

Need your opinion about replacing the original Reed Valves in my 1986 Evinrude 30 hp.

Why are you trying to fix a motor that isn't broken? Sounds perfectly normal to me.

    Old Firestone Motor

    That is a 4-head bolt powerhead which makes it a 3.5 hp.1946 i believe

    Prestolite starter assembly

Um, the battery OK? Did you have it load tested? Have you done voltage drop tests on the cables? So you say there are magnets in the starter? Interesting. Yeah you might as well run out and buy a new solenoid. Everybody else does. Good for my stock in the solenoid factory.

The trailing letter indicates any mid-year engineering changes that were made--IF any were made. Otherwise it means nothing.

1956 Johnson 6hp versus evinrude 6hp pros and cons

Think of it this way. At one time the 7.5 and 5.5 were sold side by side. A 6hp is basically the same motor as the old 5.5. IF the 7.5 will plane the boat but the 6 cannot there will be a considerable increase in speed.

    Surging Johnson 6 hp.

I have a suspicion that the fuel pumps won't work properly at the extremely high RPM's you are turning. Never have tried it though, and probably never will.
