    cotton flock as thickening agent

My local fiberglass guy was showing me cotton flock as an alternative to cabosil as a thickening agent. Much less nasty dust to deal with. Anyone have experience using it in boats?

    Epoxy Resin....Grinding, amine blushing........

What's the protocol here for new layups over older layups both done with epoxy resin. I'm talking about glassing to something that was done a day or two ago, maybe a week. Does it need to be scuffed up. Acetone of course. Not sure about soap and water for the amine blush. Not sure if i...

use of Cypress wood in restore

Anyone here used cypress in their boat building? I am considering using it in a few spots in my rebuild. One would be for a nailer to secure the deck to rather than my stringers. Another space would be to mount seats to. Finally, for interior seat box construction and for some wall areas to...

Epoxy Resin adhering ot old gel coat

My boat has what appears to be gelcoat brushed into the bilge and sole area of the boat. Does this have to be ground off to get a good bond between the new fiberglass with epoxy or will it adhere ok? How do I know if it is gelcoat or paint?

    Mercruiser 165 transom plate/outdrive

I'm removing the transom in my boat. It appears to be 1 3/4" at the outdrive hole. My plan originally was to replace the transom with two sheets of 3/4" for a total thickness of 1 1/2". Does anyone know the tolerances on this transom plate/outdrive setup? Should I maybe just throw in another...

    Gear oil reservoir addition

I have an old mercruiser 165. A marine mechanic suggested that adding a reservoir inside the hull of the boat connected to the top fill plug of the outdrive would be a good idea. Making a clear reservoir would allow me to see a fill line so i'd always know if the drive was "making" or losing...

    mercruiser 165 - chevy 250 inline 6

I have to pull my motor to do some stringer and transom work. While its out i figure it would be a good time to go through it and rebuild/replace what needs done. My first question is what is the progression of tests I should do. I think compression is #1 and then possibly leak down. Should...

Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

I did some more thorough investigating of my boat today. Don't like what I found. My transom has wet wood everywhere. It DOES NOT flex when I stand on the outdrive and bounce up and down on it, but it is wet. Also I inspected the starboard stringer closely and it is wet and very punky in...

    Help Rewiring

I've torn apart my boat for refinishing the interior. Its an old slickcraft and there have been a multitude of things wired, removed, wires patched into, blah, blah. I've taken out all the wiring that isn't related to the original mercruiser 165. I'm starting anew with all the other wiring...

I have a small amount of gear lube coming out of the small (1/8") hole at the front of the lower unit housing on the top side of the rounded part of the housing. What does this indicate? I changed the water pump this past summer.
