No spark plug spark... 170 MC , 1985 Sea Ray

Thank you fir verifying my thought. The most likely culprit seems it would be a shorted condenser then. Whatever happened while it was sitting still, stored. The spark makes it to th new distributor cap but nothing past that point. Other only other thing I can think of is the timing. But that...

No spark plug spark... 170 MC , 1985 Sea Ray

I popped a hole in the side of the distributor cap so I got a new one & rotor. Also got a spark detector. I tested the coil with the spark plug tester and it sparks each time the engine turns over. The wire is is good from the coil. I checked & gapped the points @ 23. I don’t have a spark from...

Could the condenser in the distributor be bad?

1985 Sear Ray, 170 MC inboard, no ignition spark

She ran great several months ago and has sat under my shed since. Today it turns over well but has not spark at a plug. I put a good plug into the wiring while the engine turns over and it has no spark. I removed the distributor cap and the points and rotor look good. It was all newly replaced...

    Torque for fuel pump mount?

I finally got a fuel pump that fits. One of the 2 mounting bolt holes in the engine side stripped out. I re tapped it with a heli coil. Don’t want to do that again! Is there a specific torque suggested? MC 165 , 1987 or 88 engine. thanks!

Water interring the front of my boat

Warm water coming into the bilge 1985, 165 MC. While underway I looked at every location I could and found no leaks. But I have to use the bilge pump to remove clean warm water. could it be coming from the exhaust couplers? thanks

My 160 MC stalls out while idling

For the first time on the water this season we ran great. But later while at or very slow speed the idle would change, slow down. It would always take the gas and run great. But at idle it would stall out unless I I would speed up the RPM. after coming home I removed the flame arrester. Again it...

    having the water empeller replaced

Just got my 1985 Sea Ray back from getting her ready to ride this summer. While on the water hose and running, I very soon started smelling something like rubber burning, then some smoke coming from the rear of the engine. I turned it off immediately. Temp was 175, which it never gets that warm...

Mercruiser 170, 1985 year. Oil pressure dropped to 0

Very odd thing, for the first time in years my boat is fixed and running great. Went out 2 times ago, hit a log, very hard but driving relatively slow. Struck several times before I could get out of this shallow area. While driving to a sandbar where other boaters were hanging out I noticed my...

Last year my boat started taking on water...

Inside front (mid cabin cruiser) soon as I walk down the steps there is a cover with a bilge pump and a low area for it. Last year it started filling with water while riding. I crawled underneath (last year) and rubbed a white caulk into every little crack I found. So riding for the first time...

    My ignition stopped working

What happened? While riding today we suddenly ran over shallow water & hit a log. It really jerked to boat & sudden slowing the engine. Afterwards I noticed the oil pressure dropped to about 10 or 15 lbs but continued running fine. We slowly drove to a sandy island and got out and played in the...

How to remove a gear housing drive shaft?

My first time ever seeing such a thing I need to verify I am doing this correctly. First thing I verified I have the proper ratio, Which is 1-84-1, It has 17/19 teeth. I have an extra outdrive and attempted to remove the gear housing drive shaft from it. I have it apart but can not pull it...

    Setting two shift cables

While waiting on more parts I got the shift shaft connected and now moved inside to the remote shifters. It may have been connected wrong. I refer to the shift lever. My shift lever has 3 holes in it, the bottom one is elongated (slotted) and the instructions say to attach the drive shift cable...

I should just stick to doing what I know how to do, but....

After spending a lot of money, lots of time working on my own boat, progress just sucks! So now I got more tools in, checked the inch lbs on my ujoint bearing. I can not tighten it enough to go over 2.2 inch lbs. I checked the torque reading at this point and it reads 80 ft lbs. I can still turn...

what is the secret to getting the bellows on?

I have spent 2 hours in the hot sun today, just can't seem to get the gimbal bellows onto the gimbal housing mount. I can only get it on half way, with or without adhesive. I don't understand why adhesive is used in the first place? I have a tool for the exhaust bellows, is there one for the gimbal?

    Replacing my exhaust bellows

I have gotten the bellows off, at least 2 problems though I found no holes in the bellows. The shift cable needs replacing, at the outdrive the housing is rusted apart with rusted wires showing in the housing. I can get a new one, do I need a special tool to get the old one off? Next at the...

Replacing all of the bellows for my outdrive.

I am sure there must me lots of resources available to learn how to replace all of these but not sure where to look. I think I need to remove the outdrive, then start removing the section that the outdrive mounts to?
