Still can't get engine to take the gas and run smoothly

I overhauled the carb, changed the timing to 6 from about 15 it was at. Removed the carb again, went through everything and put back on the engine. With the ear muffs on, she cranks up and runs so well. The idle mixture needle still has to be out 4 to 4.5 turns to run. She cranks up and idles...

Shifter not in right position to allow cranking

Recently and not every time, while in neutral, nothing happens. Put it in gear shift position neutral, and it works. Could the mechanisms in the back of the shifter handle just need some oiling??

    Timing marks?

I decided to check my engine MC 165 timing before I consider pulling the carburetor off again. I believe I saw 6 degrees BTDC listed for it. I have the timing light and I can crank her up, so at idle, I need to ID the correct mark to use. Thanks

    Help with my anchor Pullpit

My very old teak pulpit has seen it's better days. It measures about 23 inches long, is 10 inches wide at the base and has a 10x1 inch slit in the center for the rope to run through. It is two pieces of wood glued together. There are 3 bolts that hold it onto the boat. Thinking I may have to make...

How can water get into the outdrive oil?

Changed my fresh water impeller last week and found the oil somewhat milky. It sat up for a couple of years on the trailer under a shed. Was used just a couple of times since the last change and once this past week for a test run. I replaced the seals in the bottom of the lower unit about 3...

    Is my heat exchanger bad

My post regarding my carburetor changed to having overheating problems so I thought I would just post a new topic regarding this. I removed my heat exchanger after doing a pressure test that would not hold more than 10 lbs. I do not have any pressure testing equipment here so I just filled the...

    Carburator adjustment ?

Carburator adjustment 1987 470 Mercruiser, she sat up for about 2 years on the trailer under a shed. I put new batteries in, took her to the local shop, complete tune up and an old water leak repaired. They bypassed my fuel pump and used an outboard tank to run the engine. It still did not run...

    Skipping yesterday

Last time I ran the boat 4 weeks ago, it hesitated to take the throttle. Before going out yesterday, it would not run in the yard, checked the points, they did not open enough if at all. Cleaned the cap and connections gapped them and she fired right up and ran fine. Got to the lake and started...

engine wants to choke off when excellerating.

Boat sat up about 3 or 4 weeks under my shed out of the water. She started off pretty good on the 4th but seems the more I rode the worse it got. Pulling a tube I did several stops you know. Sometimes it would cut off when throttling down to idle, but mostly when I gave it throttle she starts...

Why does oil smoke come out of the oil cap??

My MC 170 had a plug type oil cap, this 165 has a cap with fiber inside and small holes around the lower portion. When driving I see oil smoke coming out of the holes and the smoke oil builds up and runs down the valve cover. Should I try and replace the cap with a sealed one or is this a...

What is the best sealant to use on...

My swim deck has a loose screw (as do I sometimes) it is also stripped (holds the braceing to the transom). I want to fill the screw hole with something that will hold it as well as seal it. Prefer something I can buy at WalMart or a local hardware store. Thanks' Glenn

    How to change engine oil

I don't change my engine oil often because it is too difficult. I do have a oil vacuum apparatus I can drop a hose down the dip stick port but I just don't do that. I also don't like dropping oil into the well and catching it at the drain in the rear of the boat. Can't get anything beneath the...

    Suzuki Wet Bike repair

Thought I would throw this one out for you. Maybe the wrong place to go but I need advice. My 19 year old nephew saw a movie of his mother (my sister) riding and falling off this thing long ago and he wants to get her running again. I have a very old Wet Bike by Suzuki. If you are not familiar...

Inside area of engine compartment is rotting...

I am considering repairing the wood that surrounds the engine, it is wood and was at an earlier time fiberglassed or resin primed. That has worn off. Wondering should I tear out the old wood and attempt to replace it with marine or treated wood and resin prime it, or just resin prime the rotten...

    Alignment ?

Just confused as to why after removing the outdrive, would the engine need to be re-aligned with the alignment tool. Wouldn't the engine need to be moved in order for it to be out of alignment, or put back into alignment? Thanks ahead of time. Glenn

I found white oil in the bellows today....

Thanks Don for the help on the impeller. I could not shift the shifter today, pulled the upper part of the outdrive off, found white oily stuff in the large bellows and the shifter cable was clogged up with a cream color hardened powder. Cleaned it all out, the shifter works smooth now but...

Changed out water impeller on outdrive...

470 Mercruiser with bravo II outdrive, 1988 I think. The book states to rotate the shaft clockwise while pushing the impeller into the housing. Because the drive shaft turns the same direction when in forward or reverse (counter clockwise) when I turn the prop, I left it in forward and turned...

Why replace water impeller early in fall vs waiting till spring?

Ready to replace my impeller, wouldn't it be best to wait until spring so the rubber would not be setting up bent for 6 or more months before getting used? Glenn
