    Friscoboater’s Searay resto - drainplug Q

I’m trying to do what Friscoboater did on his Searay - make an oversized drainplug cutout and fill it with PB so water never has a chance to contact the wood. He placed a section of PVC against the hole and PB’d around it. I’m assuming he did this because it’s easier than drilling through the...

    Fitting outdrive to new transom

Hello all, I asked about this in a different forum but will try here as well. I have a 1977 Skipjack that needs a new transom. I’m doing this myself with no experience, and with a lot of help from this site and the people that post here. Old one is removed and new one is cut out and I’m...

    Storing resin in other containers

Hello all. I just bought a 5 gal bucket of poly resin. I’d like to transfer some of it to a smaller container for easier handling. Is it ok to store in a new paint can? I also have an old empty resin can that I can clean out. Any issues with either of these? How do you guys deal with large...

New transom 1977 skipjack 24’ open

Had some rot issues so I chiseled out my transom, did some grinding, and now I’m getting ready to glass some wood back in. Never done anything like this before so I’m here to ask the experts some questions. Sorry if the photos are bad. I had a weird half sun/half shade thing going so...

    Battery cable gauge

I’ve read that the cable gauge should be determined by the length. But if you have multiple runs of different lengths is ok to have different gauges? For example, let’s say the run from my battery to the selector switch is 6 feet so I use 1 gauge. Then the run from the switch to starter is 3...

    Recommend me a rust converter

Looking for a rust converter that won’t break the bank. I don’t put much trust in Amazon reviews so I’d like to hear from real experience. This is for a Mercruiser 5.7 if it matters. I guess i could also use recommendations on a primer and paint. Pics below, because everyone likes pics.

Pulling Mercruiser 5.7 - steering control valve and rear motor mounts

I'm in the process of removing my Mercruiser 5.7 sterndrive to do a hull restoration and have a couple questions. Are the circled bolts in the pic the rear motor mounts? Also, do I have to remove the steering control valve before I pull the engine?

Bravo 2 outdrive removal - stuck

Trying to remove my bravo outdrive. I removed the the trim cylinders and the 6 nuts. Put a block of wood on top and pulled up on the outdrive but it won't break free. Sprayed some wd40 around the studs and between the mating surfaces but it still won't budge. Any other tips or tricks to this? I...

Factory drilled holes in stringers and bulkheads 1977 Spikjack

Any ideas why these holes were drilled into the stringers and bulkheads? They can't be for drainage because they are too high on the stringers. I know they are from the factory because they in the bulkheads fore and aft of the original fuel tank (and foam).

Bulkhead attachment between stringer and hull

This bulkhead connects the starboard stringer to the hull. It looks like the wood is not in contact with the hull on the left (looking aft) and just has glass bridging the gap. Bad repair job or bad original construction? Does this need to be repaired asap or not that big of a deal? 1977...

Selecting wood type for stringer repair

I'm replacing a section of rotten stringer on my 1977 Skipjack. I've heard that the original stringers were fir or spruce. Would it be a bad idea to use a hard wood like oak for this repair?

    Questions on fuel tank replacement

I'm replacing the fuel tank, hoses, fill, vent, etc on my 1977 Skipjack 24 open. I believe everything is original equipment. The fill is grounded to the tank, and the tank grounded to the battery, via the sender, I believe. If I replace the tank with a plastic unit do I still need to...
