    Ignorance of the masses

I was in the local parts store with hood off my 55 Johnson to get some paint matched when this guy said "boy thats an old one". Told him what it was and he said that they use them old motors for "boat anchors". I asked why and he said "you cant find parts nowhere" I politely told him how wrong...

    1955 Rde 19

I just removed the lower unit from my 1955 25 hp Johnson. The gears look good, the clutch dog is a little rounded on the drive side but I can turn it 180*. My question is: can the upper bronze drive shaft bushing be replaced? It looks like it can. The drive shaft wobbles quite a bit so I know...

    Stat and no stat motor

I noticed that my 66 Johnson 20hp has a small hole in the copper tube that comes out of the pump. Is this to bleed pressure until the stat opens? My 58 non stat 18hp Evinrude dosen't have one.

    Shaft o-ring

I know the o-ring on the top of the drive shaft is supposed to keep water out of the powerhead, but is this really a problem? Has anyone experienced a failure from this?

    54 evinrude 15hp

I decided to reseal the lower unit on my 54 because it still had the original seals and they leaked. Went and got a Sierra kit, 18-2684, and disassembeld the LU. Everything looked good, shaft wasn't scored too bad and it fit tight in the bushings, gears looked like new. When I opened the kit it...

    Seals. old vs new

I've re-sealed a couple of older lower units recently and noticed that the original shaft and prop seals appear to be more robust than their modern replacements. It appears to me that they would lend some needed support to a unit with worn bushings. I started to tear into my 54 Evinrude 15hp...

    Lubriplate

Anyone ever used this instead of of gear oil for a leaky lower unit? I read this on another website and I couldn't believe it.

    Bad gas?

Can't think of anything else. Rebuilt the carb, new float, needle, gaskets, fuel line, sparkplugs ect. Has good compression and a hot spark. My gas is a few months old but I ran my other outboard on it a few weeks ago. This is a 1954 Evinrude 15hp. I'll get some fresh gas in the morning and try that.

    2-line fuel system rebuild.

Can you replace leaking o-rings in the female connector on a 2-line system? I have two pressurized tanks and would like to get some use out of them.

Flywheel binding 66 Johnson 20 hp

I did a search but didn't get the answer I was looking for. Installed new points, coils and condensers this morning and everything went together fine.Engine turns easily using the prop in gear to set points. I cleaned the mating surfaces and installed the flywheel, snugged it and then torqued to...

    Lower unit swap

Does anyone know if a 54 Evinrude 15hp lower unit is the same as a 58 18hp lower unit?

    58 Evinrude Fastwin 18

Sight unseen I have apparently purchased a 58 18hp evinrude (15024). The weather here has gone to hell and prevented me from seeing it in person. My fishing buddie just called me and assured me it was in good shape. Motor, 2 pressurized tanks for $100. And as an added bonus, for an additional...

    Compression test

When doing a compression test on an older motor that has been sitting for a while,is it a good idea to shoot a little bit of lubricant into the cylinders to simulate a functioning motor. I was thinking a dry cylinder might give a false reading.

    Horsepower rating.

Johnson/Evinrude 18,20 and 25 hp 22ci motors. Don't they all use basically the same components? So is this "advertised hp" or is there really a seat of the pants difference? (bear with me,I have a lot of questions).:D
