What ford is doing with tech is simply amazing and mind boggleing trying to keep up with how they do it.....Think that's amazing watch for the 5.0 to be eoc boosted.....Think along the lines of a 302v8 dominating the deisel market...:D Where does that leave them with there new deisel just released...

SHAZAM!! What wonders can be worked with direct injection, ultra-high compression ratios and double turbos. Four stroke engines are not ready to join the dinosaurs yet. :)

Just think of what BRP could do with that engine in outboard form. 90ci and 300HP.

I haven't been a huge ford fan since my company truck is one and I hate driving it. But things that ford has been doing lately makes me want to look at them closer. Their ecoboost engines are amazing.

Bombardier/BRP (before the recreational side broke off from the parent company) owns rotax and those engines are found in everything from snowmobiles to jet planes.

The new turboed 4 stroke sleds are awesome.

The Ecoboost (3.5L) I'm driving is incredible. 2012 Lincoln MkT, All Wheel Drive.

It gets an honest 24-25 MPG at highway speeds of 75-80. Not bad for an AWD that weighs two tons and has every conceivable amenity! I have over 15K on it now and the MPG is getting better.

Not to mention that there are very few vehicles, on the road, that can catch it when I feel frisky. The power is instant and constant all the way.

Re: 1.0 litre Ecoboost Go-Kart

Legendary engine tuner/builder Smokey Yunick built a normally aspirated opposed twin 40+yrs ago that developed 180hp and got 60mpg. This stuff isn't anything new. Not to say I don't like it, but the basic principles have been around for years.

Barring the more sinister side, I think what's happening is engine manufacturing technology is starting to keep pace with the designers idea(s)? ie. You design it we can build it.

Tbk I'm kinda a closet 'hypermiler'. Shift into neutral & coast whenever possible, overinflate my tires, etc ...

You bring up a very poignant point. History aviation turbo charging direction injection. Google those term i think you will find them all leading back to ww2. In come's Bill Mually former Boeing exe..aviation and guess what back to the future :D

Google Ford's v8 cougar development... It was slapped down for the ecoboost. Ok that's enough but the next time a marketing guy and a accountant get together shoot em on the spot...

Mercedes Benz pioneered DFI during WWII, (BF109) but it was mechanical. They still used it in the 300SL gullwings, but still mechanical. Computer control has freed the technology, along with computer controlled manufacturing.

What will be the next breakthrough??

most of the euro visitors are proberly scatching there heads and wondering what you are on about with "fords tech".
ford has been market leader in turbo charged cars for years in the euro market. its nice to see that they are finnaly making it this side of the pond. i realy hope they redo the fiesta xr2 cosworth 20 years ago that was a fast little car with more up to date electronics and better turbo tech it would be a serious hot hatch and im old enoght now to get insurance on it.

Agree. Not all current technology is indeed "new" technology.

While the AWD would be nice, my '98 Olds Aurora gets 31-34mpg @ 75-80mph, and sports a 250hp 4.0L NorthStar V8 that's one of the best sounding GM engines ever produced (with a muffler delete).
Not mine, but same upgrade: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZdoSYeh72E
I average 26.5mpg for mixed city/hwy. Bang for buck is incredible too: paid $2700 for it, $35/mo for insurance!
EcoBoost: Ford still wayyyy behind the times. NorthStar was released early 90's, prob other similar systems prior to that too.

I could live with 59 mpg I believe. For that little 1.0 l to make that kind of power and to circle the Nuburgring that quick it has to have a incredible sound coming out of it.
As far as the Northstar, I`m glad you are happy with it. You must have got one of the good ones. Every Northstar I`ve ever seen leaked oil like a sieve and coolant also. GM used to small head bolts and they would pull the threads out of block and blow the head gaskets. They finally revised the design in 2000 and went to bigger bolts.

59mpg would be great, but I'm still not that impressed with it. I had a '93 Geo Metro 2D with a 1.0L 3cyl, and I got 48mpg on the highway. Almost 20yrs of technology, and they can only bump it 10mpg?? I'm sure the Ford will have a much higher build quality though, and I'm sure it will ride and handle much better than the ol' Metro. (Prob look a lot better too LOL)

Yeah, its too bad you really can't effectively repair the NorthStar head gaskets. Some companies claim to have a permanent fix, but I've heard very mixed results. Mine leaks no oil or coolant @ 182K miles. Hoping mine will last until about 210-220k, then I'll source a low mile engine or a low mile Aurora. There are still some out there with 60-70k on them that pop up for sale every once in a while.

LOL I have to laugh when someone looks STRICTLY at mpg, and says "my Geo Metro got 48mpg on the highway." Well lets see, did your Geo Metro have 123hp and 125fp of torque? Me thinks NOT.

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/07/31/2012-ford-focus-1-0-liter-ecoboost-quick-spin-review/

The Metro had several engine options in it eight years under the Geo name. From 1989 through 1994, the base 1.0 liter produced 49 horsepower (hp) and the "high-output" engine produced 55 hp. From 1995 through 1997, the base engine increased to 55 hp and the "high-output" 1.3 liter produced 70 hp.

http://www.ehow.com/facts_7433515_geo-metro-engine-specifications.html

So all in all, yea they only went up 2mpg, but they more than doubled the horsepower, almost tripling it. To do THAT AND increase miles per gallon, yea that is substantial. The base 1993 Geo Metro engine produced 49hp, yet got comparable mileage to the Ecoboost engine, at 123 hp. That ecoboost engine would run circles around your car, burning the same fuel and being the same exact displacement. Not to mention your Geo Metro weighed in at 1690lbs, the smallest Ford car, the Fiesta, is 2600lbs and has a 1.6liter engine boasting 40+mpg highway. So with more power, slinging a much more substantial car down the road, the MPG has gone up. Oh yea, the crash test ratings for the Geo Metro were terrible, the Ford Fiesta got an IIHS top safety pick 5 star crash test rating in all categories. Try that in your Metro.

Yea, that IS innovation.

Comparing the Ecoboost vehicles to the Metro is like comparing a dingy to a yacht.

Re: 1.0 litre Ecoboost Go-Kart

Fuel economy is equally eye-popping: unofficially 2.4 l/100 km (118 mpg) at 56 km/h (35 mph), and 5 l/100 km (57 mpg) at 120 km/h (75 mph)

"unnofficial" must be the new word for bullsh...
lots of cars can get 57mpg at one consistent speed.

Sounds like a neat race car. Too bad they have to throw that sort of stuff into these press releases.
