135ESL75E won't run past 1/2 throttle

Okay so this wasn't an 85HP. Now that that is settled, I have another question.

Earlier I went through the ignition system, (back when we thought this was an 85) and the voltages and resistances were okay. I replaced the coils, since I had two cracked and one bleeding.

The boat still wouldn't start well or idle, when in the water. If I pull the throttle lever on the motor forward (towards the bow) enough to rotate the throttle cam a little, I can get it to start. Then after it warms up I can use the warm-up lever to keep it idling. To shift it is a quick dance of pushing down the warm-up lever and then quickly shoving it into drive before it dies! So far, this is exactly the way it was before I made any changes.

I got the boat out in the water and ran it around a little bit at medium throttle. Then across the lake at about 3/4 throttle and it ran okay but seemed a little off (hesitant when accelerating). I had to idle out of gear for about 4-5 minutes, with the warm-up lever up (because it won't idle by itself). Then when I tried to accelerate, the motor died. After that time I now cannot get the throttle past about 1/2-way. If I do, the engine dies.:(

Any ideas???

suggest a carb cleaning and rebuild, then a link and sinc.

Thanks,

Just had a tune-up including carb kit.

Linc-n-sinc was started per some verbal instructions from wavrider. But I forgot the whole process he described.

Here is what I did so far.

The Clymer manual said the cam-follower should line up with the first (small) notch on the cam the instant the throttle shaft started to rotate as I rotated the cam. However, the instructions did not mention the START mark on the cam and what to do. Ken told me to that the cam-follower should line up with the START mark and to adjust the throttle cam yoke until it did. I adjusted the yoke but not all the way. I went six turns, and thought I'd stop there to see if there was an imporvement. If so, I'd do more. The cam follower almost lined up with the START mark, but not quite.

Then this is where I probably messed up. I was instructed to perform the linc and sinc steps. I didn't write them down and a few hours had past. So this was well past my short-term memory window. What I did next was loosen the cam-follower screw and allow the throttle to close completely. Then I forgot what to do next.

I'll have to get back with Ken to find out what I really should have done but will appreciate any comments form you experts. After I do this, I don't know if this will fix my warm-up lever problem (just doesn't move the throttle much) but I hope it does.

expecting something to run right, when 1/2 way serviced. get a real manual also. Clymers are to keep the oil from dripping on the driveway, when you change the lower unit oil, Selocs are to keep your knees clean.

Possible that the throttle cable is also out of adjustment under the cowling. Once you get the engine sync and linked, reattach the throttle cable. Be sure that when the throttle handle is full forward, that the carb butterflies are full open. Also, set the idle when the boat is fully floating in the water.

One can only be 1/2-way there, if the endpoint is known;)

I will keep my eye out for a real manual. But in the hands of a skilled outboard mechanic such as myself, I'm afraid a step-by-step video accompanied with an Outboards For Dummies book would only get me further in trouble. Ha!

But I'm having fun learning.

So who sells a real manual? Isn't Selco the brand being sold on this site?

Keep an eye on Ebay for a 1975 135HP model-specific Evinrude or Johnson factory service manual. They come up a lot.

Will the factory manuals be better or worse to use for those of us who are not experienced mechanics? I like pictures! Lot's of pictures. Cuz when the manuals say "adjust this screw" or "remove this part", I need someone to show exactly which screw or part they're talking about:(
