Re: 15 Holiday Transom redo, also Hull ID Question.

I was looking over all of my rebuild here and while I am disappointed with the title of this thing...I sure am thankful for all of the help that the starmada have provided me. I am wondering how to cover the transom board now. I see that some have said that they use the epoxy, but how? I saw today that West Marine has a product that seemed like it was made for the transom covering. So I guess my question is how? How do I cover the transom with the epoxy or is varnish going to be good enough to protect this thing?

IMHO Spar varnish does a great job of sealing the wood. 3-4 coats on the flats and 6 on the edges. The transom that was in the boat lasted at least 20 years with no coating so on a boat that is looked after and kept dry a coated one should last for ever.

+1 on that! :) --- and not just because he's a Canuk either! I have even smear a little 3M 5200 on the edges for good measure on top of the multi coats.

I bought the spar today and put the first coat on the transom, thank you guys for that. I needed a push in the right direction. I also was able to get the leak check done no leaks this time after some minor ones the first time. Thank you gluvit! I hope to get the floor in tomorrow, well at least cut and ready for install. Moving right along.

As it has been said again and again... any progress is good progess.... even when you do it over. Something learned it still progress!!!!

Glad to see you are leak free and began a little spar action! Best to be well ventilated and a respirator should be worn if you aren't already!!

Rock and roll!!

Do I also varnish the floor boards? I will be putting down marine vinyl flooring from Cabela's, but I haven't yet looked into how I will prep the floor for it. I have exterior grade 1/2" plywood for the floor boards.

Yup, we spar the floor the same as the transom, it seals the wood and makes a nice smooth surface for your vinyl.

Thank you Glen. I have the transom finished, now onto the floor boards...do both sides of these need varnish, or just the tops? Also, how many coats 2 or 3 like transom? I'm using minwax helmsman spar varnish...anyone have an opinion of this stuff if they've used it? I'm about half-way through the first quart, and wasn't sure if there was something that was superior to this stuff. I only say that because it seems thinned out, and I understand that the more expensive stuff has a thicker consistency, maybe saving a coat or two(?).

I do like the Helmsman Spar Urethane a bunch, pretty darn good.

It's thinner than epoxy therefore needing more coats (in my opinion) (really depends on the application too).

I like the Helmsman, gone through a few quarts. It soaks into the wood pretty good because of the consistency, especially the first coat. Do top and bottom and every time you do a coat, do the edges. You end up with twice as many coats on the edges which has the exposed end grain.

I usually do 3 coats on the underside of the floor... install the floor.... seal up the rivit holes... then put 1 last coat on top as good measure. You could probably get away with 2 on the underside and 3 on the top.... but I like 3 and 4 coats respectively.

Helmans is great. Buy it in the quart... learned the hardway after about 1/2 of my 1 gallon can went gloopy!

Well it seems like I have the right stuff! Thank you all for your comments...I was thinking since I was near the end of the quart I should change products if there was something better, but I won't and since the floor boards are soaking this up pretty good I will get some more tomorrow. Blackhawks nice job tonight watch out for us Red Wings next year! Now that my team's out of the playoffs I can focus better on this project...in the morning.

Etching primer and primer on the hull...two coats of each. Spray gun was testing me, but the 10% rule worked in my favor, and I overcame. I'm a little nervous to put on the paint, but I will complete it tomorrow with pictures. This is my first attempt to paint with a sprayer, so its been a challenge. The gun takes longer to clean then the time it takes to use it! I think this is normal, I guess I should buy more than one of these sprayers, then I won't have to clean them at all. Floor and flotation going on right after paint. Moving right along.

Sorry, my wife has motivated me to get the paint booth out of the center of our back yard, so I've been working to get the hull painted and in the garage for floor and transom install. I'm quite proud of the progress made...there are so many steps in this rebuild its hard to stay focused without looking at or worrying about another phase. I am enjoying myself though...no top side primer pics, but here's the first coat of enamel on top half of the hull, wet sand and coat number two tomorrow, then the paint booth is closed...until I do the sides!

I was wondering where I can get some decals for the sides for sure the StarCraft logo, but maybe some design too? Also, I was wondering do you think that two coats of enamel is enough? I have more than enough for a third coat, what do y'all think?

signspecialist.com, great people to deal with for your decals. Two or three coats will be good. If your using Rust The cure time to hard with three coats could be as long as 3 weeks depending on temps.

Thank you Glen, I have just ordered the decals, and as far as the painting I will probably put 3 coats on. I think you meant rust oleum which is what I'm using.

Now onto rivets, for the floor. I have the ones that are 1/2" of "grip", but since my floorboards are 1/2" plus the varnish coats, is this going to be good enough? I can't find rivets that are larger than this size. It looks like they might work, but I'm sure someone else may have encountered this.

Hey Red you will need longer rivets than those, I use 1" aluminum/ aluminum with a large head, but I don't countersink the heads on them just lay vinyl over.
