I am a newbie to the forum. I can see already it is going to be addicting. I recently purchased a 1984 Nordic by Crestliner. It is 18 ft. I just started today tearing into it. I took up a portion of the floor and exposed the gas tank, but it appears that the two outboard sections of the hull are filled with foam. I am wondering if the expandable foam is adhered to the hull at all? Also, I wanted to recoat the interior with Gluvit, per all of your recomendations. Will I have to break this foam apart to remove it? What is best to replace it with. Maybe a better question to ask is if there is a thread out there that describes this process step by stem that I could look at to save time? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Since you mention Gluvit I assume we're talking about an aluminum hull. The foam is probably quite adhered and will be a pain to get out. In order to properly apply Gluvit, the hull needs to be thoroughly cleaned. Got any pics?

Re: 18 ft Crestliner Nordic Project

Ripping out the expand-a-foam last nite on my boat, i noticed they put sheets of styrofoam on the bottom and the expand-a-foam on top of that. This seem to have made for much easier work getting all the foam out. It's now all removed. But i could tell how well that foam stuck to the stringers. Took a small saw to the middle and cut out wedges and just pried it up and out with a small width shovel :)

You kind of just have to get in there and rip it out. I used a point tip shovel but my boat is fiberglass. I am not sure that will work on a tinny with rivets but something along those lines will. Just get out as much as you can and then use a pressure washer to get down to metal.

I am going to start a thread with pictures, tonight...watch for it. Thanks for the info everyone. I will just have to get the balance of the floor up and see what I have.

Re: 18 ft Crestliner Nordic Project

Thanks for the kind remark about the boat. I am going to try to make it into something we can use for a while. I started right in on gutting the boat, today. The previous owner replaced the floor in the boat as well as a few well intentioned changes to the boat hat did not work out so well. First of all, he installed new carpet on the walls of the hull with contact cement. He did this all the way to the gunwale, then sprayed foam under the interior lip of the gunwale, overtop of the carpet. This made it tough to get the carpet out.

Then, I got the floor up on the port side. He also filled the area under the deck with expanding foam. This is going to need to come out, as it is trapping water in multiple places in the hull. I'm sure this was a big contributor to the premature deterioration of the 2nd floor.

The bright spot was the ability for me to remove the whole floor without removing the consoles and windshield. They are actually welded to the gunwales, so I can do all of the floor work without getting into those hassles.

Get a good Mask and try some EZ Off Oven cleaner to get the carpet glue and foam residue off. It really works great. Power wash it afterwards and voila'....Good as new!!!

That sounds great. I will have to buy some. Any idea how much I might need? I will likely get the foam out of the floor first, as the water the will be generated by the powerwasher will not have anywhere to go. Thanks for the reply...:D

Thanks for the compliment. I can't wait to get it out on the water to see how the "deep V" carves through the chop. I have been following you thread as well. Your boat looks great. In fact, in an effort to secure more financing for my project, I showeed my wife a picture of your boat the other night.

I am addicted to walleye, perch and salmon fishing, so I am hoping this boat will take me to them anywhere on the great lakes. We too have a young family, so I am trying to strike that balance between family fun mobile and serious fishing boat. I am putting a 150 evinrude on it, so shouldn't have any problems with power.

I am going to try to get the balance of everything out of the boat today, so I can get going putting it back together.

Keep up the good work on the Phantom.

Re: 18 ft Crestliner Nordic Project

Here are a few pictures of today's work. Unfortunately, I had an unexpected set back. The transom on this boat was total mush. I hee hawwed around for a while trying to put off the repair, but finally I just bit the bullet and tore it out. It was not a fun project. It is out now, just need to find what I am going to use to replace it. Any suggestions? The transom was 2" thick on this boat.

Standard fare is two layers of 3/4 marine grade plywood laminated together and sealed with resin.

Re: 18 ft Crestliner Nordic Project

Good work so far. I would recommend 3/4 ext. ply with 1/2 in ply laminated in the middle to give you your 2". Various methods to laminate it. Personally I would just use some PL from Home depot and make sure to use a fine tooth notched trowel to get good coverage. Heavy weight to seal the deal. Make a cardboard template to get it to fit just right then cut it out Seal it all up with some resin and cloth and voila' you got a new transom.

I'm just sayin...:D

Resin and cloth? Excuse my inexperience, but I am not familiar with that. Could you be more specific? Also, the space is very tight wherer this 2" thick piece needs to reside. I can not have anything over 2". Is there somehting else that I can do to seal the new composite transom?

If it's composite do you even need to seal it?

Re: 18 ft Crestliner Nordic Project

By composite, I meant "composed of more than one piece". Sorry for the confusion. I am leaning toward using a piece of LVL. LAminated veneer lumber. It measures 1-3/4" x 18" maximum. and is readily available by the foot. I will just sand off the factory finish and coat with something to waterproof it. Any suggestions on what to use to water proof it?
