Good mention "nw cove"............

The 1957 10hp has 5 LU bolts.

The 1957 7.5hp has 4 LU bolts.

is that one of those years where they made a mid year change ?? ie from serial ## xxxx to xxxy the lu was 4 bolt, and after that it went to the heaftier 5 bolt?

^^ yes, if you have the omc part number, and the housing is right! heres the link to cross reference from omc to sierra

OEM Cross Reference

The napa guy found it in his system and then told me he didn't have access to it and couldn't order it. I'm regretting prying this out.

do you have a bearing shop close to you?? you could always take the ds and the housing to them, they usually will mic the id and od and sell you one for just a few bucks.
hopefully hightrim will chime in, he has passed along dimensions for seals and other valuable info!

I didn't recall OMC making any radical changes back then but in checking my parts books, apparently they did.

The 1957 10hp Johnson L/U bolted on with 5 bolts and the top driveshaft seal installed directly into the gearcase housing. The original seal part number was 41-62 and superseded up to #321788. I don't know if there was a midyear change BUT...........

The 1958 10hp Johnson which looked externally identical excepting the paint scheme, upon looking closer... the lower unit bolted up with only 4 bolts and the top driveshaft seal installed in a separate housing under the water pump which then attached to the gearcase with a gasket between the two. That top driveshaft seal is part #303345. I think I'll sit back and see what develops.

New clutch dog, coils, condensers, points, plugs and carb rebuild. She is running like new. Thanks so much for all the help. I learned more than I ever imagined with this project and couldn't of done it without this site.
