ezmobee, does the vinyl have texture to it, or does it get slippery as it gets wet?

It has quite a bit of texture and doesn't get slippery at ALL.

Re: 1959 ????? Anybody Remember this boat? (1959 Glasscat Project underway)

Thank you for your advice. I am going to look into marine vinyl. A question ? Is that something that can be bought here at Iboats or where would I find it?? I never even heard of it before. Is there an underlayment I would have to install also?

Ezmobee, being a moderator, you might be the best one to ask. Is there a way I can change the name of this thread? I would like to get rid of the ??? and just say catamaran restoration or something of that sort. Since this is turning into my resto thread anyway.
Thank you all for your interest in my project. I am much honored.

That is a very cool looking boat! I too will be following your progress on it. Do you have any pictures of the interior?

Thanks again ezmobee, that seems to have changed the thread. I think that it is a little more descriptive of what I am attempting to do.

Sorry about not getting back to you spamman450. You kind of slipped in and I did not see you. I do not have any interior photos yet. I am hopeful that my wife will let me go out and play Sunday. Check back late evening Cali time I will photo interior for you. Thank you for following my post. Like I said earlier in the post I will be a little slow on the project because I usually only get time on Sunday to work. My plan is this weekend to finish the bottom of the hull painting. Then I can get to the decking (or vinyl) made/installed. I am trying to get her all ?waterproofed? before the rains start in a month or two. Interior I am not worrying about yet. I can do that this winter. Cali winters are usually mild.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Hi folks, I completed operation eyesore this weekend.:D Sunday I finished painting all of the lower exterior hull and cabin. I think she turned out very nice, I mean the job is not professional and you can tell the paint was not sprayed on. However I am happy with the results. My parents are happy with the restoration so far and told me I do not have to put my boat back in the back 40. I got to work on her for two days straight. Yesterday I moved the boat onto the driveway so I could paint the bottom hulls without being stabbed by the sticker bushes. I had forgotten my little air compressor at home and yep you guessed it I had a flat on the trailer starboard side. (You can see in photos). I did not see that it was flat at the time; I had put slime in the tire the previous weekend and thought it would hold, I and moved the boat onto the driveway. Well the tire broke a bead and was half on half off the wheel. :facepalm:Since the tire was toast anyway I moved the boat back to the side of the driveway after my work yesterday. I went and bought a replacement tire and today I took the old tire off and replaced it for the new tire on my old rim. Now I have four tires on the trailer that I should not have to worry about. The weather has been very hot here so I have not done as much as quickly as I would like. I do not want to drop from heat exposure. Today I also cleaned the deck in prep for fiberglass work. I have decided to try my hand at fiberglass. I would like to seal the complete deck with a layer or three of new fiberglass cloth (just to make sure it is watertight) it is a fifty year boat after all. I have all week to research here at iboats how to install fiberglass. Can any of you can give me some pointers or send me in the right direction on the site? I also disconnected the ?steering wheel? frame? Hutch? It is too ugly; being comprised of a homemade frame and the front plate from a Square D electrical panel. I am going to build a wooden one and stain it etc. While cleaning the floor I found an access panel that when you remove it you can see into the inner hull. Stringers made from a single piece of wood (looks like a 1x6 plank standing on narrow end) that has been glassed and the little bit I can see looks very good. Wood is firm and glassed. (I could see 3 stringers in the little view I had) I cannot see any rotted wood particles or glass shavings in the bottom of the hull. I thought the stringers would be more substantial. Is that normal for stringers in this era boats? I was thinking of putting a bilge pump down this access hole. So I do not have to cut a hole in the deck. The access is up towards the middle of the boat where the steering wheel is in the photos. Is this too far forward?
Sorry this is another long post. Have a great day my friends.:D
Dave

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

New question my friends,
I found something weird on the bottom of my boat and I was wondering what you all thought it might be. I did not have access to a camera to photo it today so I will give you a brief description and then this weekend I?ll try to post a photo.
Basically it is a small square about the size of a pocket box of wooden matches. Maybe an inch to one and a half wide and two to three inches long; it appears to be two layers the outer layer is rusted metal. The inner layer looks to be solid plastic. (I thought it looks like a light but who puts lights under the boat, and where it is placed would not be easily visible) Metal surface is much rusted so getting a good visual of it is hard. Does this go through the boat do you think? Should I remove and patch?
Thanks all
Dave

DSCF5781.jpgDSCF5779.jpgDSCF5780.jpgDSCF5782.jpgDSCF5783.jpgHi all,
I did some more work on my ?Dreams? today.:D I decided that I want to try the deck idea I have. I think it is going to look very nice. I do appreciate the concerns that ezmobee brought to my attention, and as such I sealed the ?underlayment plywood with three coats of Spar Urethane Sealant on all sides and then mounted them to the boat. (After the bottom side dried) In a few days I am going to seal the underlayment again with fiberglass resin and cloth/mat. After that dries I am going to try my deck planks that I am staining and creating now. After the final deck is attached I am going to seal it again with the Spar Urethane over the top. I really want the wooden deck effect; I did not like (could not get my mind around the vinyl or carpeting ideas. I think the weight of the floor total will amount to the weight of one adult. I am sure the boat was created to hold at least 5 people or so and since it will only be my wife and I (I think/hope) it will be alright in the end. As to the water getting into the layers of wood, I think that if I seal wood multiple times each season it will be alright. I will check the decking layers as part of my boating ?pretrip?.
Have a great day my friends.:D

Re: 1959 Cantamaran (1959 Glasscat Project underway)

Hi all,
Worked on the boat:D this weekend still working on the floor, I cut the boards to length and then stained with Minwax?s Sedona Red. Then I began attaching them to subfloor. I think they are turning out decent; I am not any sort of a carpenter. There are a few gaps where wood was warped or such. I am going to go to Hardware store and find out if there is some sort of putty/ filler that I can cram to fill up. I ran out of planking and screws so I had to stop for today. I think I am making progress. Underlayment is sealed with Thompsons, and planks are sealed on all sides as well. When full floor is in, I am going to stain again with minwax and put two coats Spar Urethane from Helmsman.

Talk to you all later.:D

Photo was taken of me by my dad. He told me I should be picking grapes or leading a camel.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Just a quick question for you my friends;
I did some fiberglass work on the deck underlayment before I started to place the deck planks.
Basically I cut strips of fiberglass cloth and glassed around the edges of plywood to the hull (I think it is called tabbing?).
As you can see from my photos it was a warm day and this was my first attempt at fiberglass resin ever.
I followed the directions on the can of resin and it ?said? that to mix in small batches because after hardener is added there is a 12 min window to work with. I mixed according to directions exactly and had about 30 seconds before it gelled and became hard as a rock in under a min. I was mixing in a clean plastic ?paint tray liner? inside a metal paint tray I lost most of the resin mix in that time :( and as such I did not put as many layers as I would have liked Paint tray was very hot to touch. Is this a result of chemical reaction or outside temp?
Glass did go on nicely after that point. :D But I feel I need a lot more practice. From now on regardless I am going to only glass in garage.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Yea, ya mixed the resin too hot, outside temps play tricks with the resins, and I think you should only glass with weather in the 80's... But you need to be sure the resin works its way all the way thru the cloth and you should precoat your "sub floor" before you lay the glass and when it starts to get tacky apply the glass and wet out, but remember more resin doesnt make it stronger actualy the opposite is true, you only need a good wet out, soaked thru transparent like...

I like what you got going, fantastic looking old piece of maritime history :)

Oh, and where did you get your resin and glass from? If you got it from hd,lowes, or wally world, its probably "waxed" resin and isnt the best for your application, and will require adjustments on your layup schedule... Some pros would say dont use the box stores resin for anything structural... Us composites is the prefered retailer for all things fiberglass around these parts... :D

Anywho, have fun! And good luck, I like what you got happening so far!

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Get a pic of whatever you was talking about sticking through the hull with rust on it. Someone will know what it is. Is this boat to be a dock boat? will it spend weeks in the water? You might need bottom coat. As for the floor it looks great I hope you did not make a water trap though. If it is a covered boat with little to no water applied I dont think you will have a problem. I do think you might want to give up on the boat and sell it to me though. Just kidding I like the lines and funky is cool.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Thank you Relocyo for your knowledge in the resin department;:D I thought that it might be the heat and the metal tray under the plastic liner (it really was hot). As for the resin, and fiberglass cloth, I bought them locally at a PPG shop named Finishmaster. The ?old man? there at the shop told me about less being more in fiberglass. He also told me that this product (I don?t recall the actual name) the cans are at my storage yard (parents? house, ha, ha) would be good for marine applications. I think I will order the next batch from US Composites. I think that I was gouged unmercifully for the luxury of getting it quickly without shipping times.
I did see firsthand the process you described and I think I will get it down. Towards the end of the project I did ?get it down? as you described.
Also thank you for your kind words about my boat. Please keep checking back and tell me if I am doing it wrong.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Thank you Proshadetree for your encouragement (don?t talk too loudly about the whole buying the boat thing?my wife might hear you) Ahem, I do not think I created a ?water trap? there are drains on the back splash wall area that I kept clear. That should keep the deck from flooding. The boat is going to be in the water for a day or two at a time, and then spend the rest of its time on the trailer. I read many of the threads here on the paint and I think the general thought around here is that if it doesn?t spend too much time actually in water the bottom paint is not really needed. Is that what you think also? I am going out to work on it tomorrow so I will take a photo of it and post tomorrow.
Have a nice morning.
