Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Cowboy: Good to see you around, I wondered what happened to you. Course, being in high school and all, I figured you must have got a new girlfriend or 10 to keep you busy.:D

JDA, thanks for dropping by my friend. Please don?t give up on yours (I was sooooo bummed out thinking I got another dud motor 3 in a row, I really was about to toss mine also, a boat ?aint much fun with no engine), you will complete yours also if you give it a little time.?..and your little car looks great. How ?bout flames on the bow of the boat!

Woody: I been racking my brains trying to figure out seating (without going yours and JDA style) I do not have that kind of talent at all. I went to my little boat shop to drop off the core for the battery I got last week. The owner of the shop was ?chopping? an old boat for the dumpster. He already took out the motor, etc. I asked him if he wanted to sell the seats to me (since they are about to go into the dumpster anyhow and they are plain as yogurt white so they will not look too out of place on my boat). He replied that if I bring a few crescents tomorrow on my lunch break and pull them off myself I can have them for free. They come from a little walk-through, and are the type where there is one seat sitting forward and one facing backwards sharing a single back rest. The bases are wood and glassed into the floor so basically I have to build a wooden ?box? to sit under them as a base, I basically take only the top portions from him.
My question to you guys. If I use these seats I am going to have to build some sort of platform for them to sit on (otherwise I will not see over the cabin wall). Have you ever seen such a thing?
Will it be silly to have the chairs so high up in the air? I mean will it make the boat more top heavy to have 4 people probably 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 feet off the deck? For me since I was going to basically be the only driver I was planning on the driver standing with a sort of padded leaning post to keep from falling backwards (but a seat would be a little better).
The platform idea could be kinda nice, I have been thinking about building cabinets under the seats and places for Ice chests (with your hidden hinges JDA).
But if I do them I am going to lose almost all of my deck space and end up probably with a narrow walkway through the center portion of the boat.
Good night guys and what do you think?

Hi Dave,

Just poppin in to share a thought or two on the seats...

Extra storage on a boat is almost always a plus...anchor, life vests, fire extinguisher, emergency tools and supplies, ropes, etc., etc...

I see a lot of guys talkin about walking room on a boat...

Personally, I don't see a lot of need for walking around room on a boat, unless it is basically just for fishing...and even then, on my bass boat, I am not walking around, but instead sitting in a post mounted swivel chair and spinning around...
An open fisherman or center console type boat is designed this way for a reason...

Most of the time, people are sitting or leaning in a boat, not walking around...plus, it is usually only one person at a time moving around, our small boat decks are not very conducive to being dance floors...If this is what you are after, then you would be looking into a party barge...

So in conclusion, I don't see a need for so much walking room in a boat...

The space directly under the seats is also usually not a good place to walk anyway, but if you absolutely want to keep it open, you could search around for some seat posts with bases...kinda like fishing chairs use...

But hey, either way free seats are a great score...

L8r,
Gus

Your a funny guy Dave, haha! Actually your right on track, finally asked a "good friend" out and we've just hit it off. But I'm really happy for you man. Those boat seats, as Charlie Sheen says (as he is a fellow Californian I feel this is appropriate) "WINNING!" And who cares what others think man. As long as you like the idea DO IT! But if it was me, I would build the platforms. Make some drawers to store fishing boxes or organizer. Something like this, http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Tackle-Storage/Tackle-Binders-Utility-Boxes%7C/pc/104793480/c/104777280/sc/104620680/Cabelas-Fisherman-Series-4-Pack-Utility-Boxes/704895.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-tackle-storage-tackle-binders-utility-boxes%2F_%2FN-1100380%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104620680%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BBRprd700185%253Bcat104777280&WTz_l=SBC%3BBRprd700185%3Bcat104777280%3Bcat104620680

I'd do that with a face or like something to close them into the hutch like a door. Maybe a fold down the sticks straight out so the box you pull out can rest on the door as you pick and choose from your arsenal. This may sound like a bunch of humble jumble, Wish I had a design program on my computer. Dang! But here is a photo on my idea with the door and how i would make it lay flat, hopefully the link works, http://go-armynavy.com/components/com_virtuemart/shop_image/product/3760.jpg GOODLUCK!

Well the pics on the forum are all screwed up again so I can't see the floorplan of your boat and I can't remember it cuz I'm OLD!!! Anyhoo, the bases for the Back to Back seats you're talking about are very easily made and I can talk/walk you thru that with no problem. We can design em so they won't be "Top Heavy" . Hopefully the pics will be back online soon.

Hey Guys,
Gus: As always thanks for poppin in. I am glad when you show up. I?ve been thinking about what you said all day and I got my mind around it, so I am going with the score?.I ended up paying 5 dollars for the seats. I could not get the seats off with the tools I brought so as I was leaving (without my seats) one of the shop mechanics came out with a hammer and a chisel and we took the box apart the old fashioned way! (Slam, bang, crash). My ?friend? the shop owner still would not accept any money (I tried to pay him and he would not accept) so, I asked if I could give the mechanic a little beer money for helping me. He told me to tip him 2 dollars, so I gave five. It is really hard to do the right thing when the man will not let me pay him!
Bill: Got your PM. A-OK.
Cowboy: ;)
Woody: If you go back a page to post 269 you can see the photos of the ?boat? I put them up via photo bucket and it should give you a good idea. I just checked they are still there. Thank you, I will certainly need your help. (Along with help from everybody else on this site; of course). The base boxes did not look very difficult at all, when I looked at the donor boat again today. The platforms are a little different although I want to try them.
Good night all
Dave:D
P.S. Anybody know a good cleaner for marine vinyl? They really need a cleaning.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Hello Guys;
Had an interesting time today; yesterday I sprained my ankle (not to bad, I can still hobble around) and I got to go work on the boat today. Since the leg was hurt I did not do too much heavy work. I did not work on the seats other than photograph them for you. I decided to do something that I have been thinking about for months. I shortened the windshield brace about 3 feet today. They had windows in them when they were on the donor boat. I broke one of them when trying to install, if you remember one exploded in my hands (old age?). Well, I really don?t have the money to run out and buy windows especially when they do not do anything were they are currently mounted. So I was left with a windshield with 5 foot braces. Today I cut them down to size and now they are just a brace. It took me hobbling around most of a day (with a lot of breaks to rest the foot). To do the one side photographed. I actually felt like MacGyver. It was not simply cutting the brace. I had to take measurements and make about 10 different cuts with a hand held hack saw. (My big saw was too unwieldy). When it was done, the bracket portion was fairly close and it hooked together nicely enough. Now the window is braced. When I push and pull on it the entire boat and trailer jiggles.
I probably will not get to go back out this weekend, I should stay off the foot, but the weather was so beautiful that I did not want to stay in the house all day?.so off to the boat yard.
Good night all.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Thanks Woody,
I am going to place the order tonight.
What do you think; do you think they will look decent in the boat? I know they are not nearly as awesome as yours but I know my limitations, and sewing is one of them, I have a hard time replacing a button on a shirt!
Thanks again;

Hi Dave,
Bummer 'bought the ankle, I know the feeling all too well, as I have lived with both "trick" ankles most of my life...

Nice lookin seats, like wood says, if they don't clean up, you can give 'em a vinyl spray paint overhaul...

Nice modification on the windsheild frame...if you decide down the road to throw some windows in there, you could always use some plexiglas...

Later,
Gus

Hey Dave,

Flip the seats over and take a pic, I'd like to see their underside structure.

Thanks

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Hi Guys;
Mike:
I am going to try the clean-up with that stuff you told me about Mike, but it is great to know there is a paint that is adequate if it does not work. They really are in good condition for their age? I looked closely at them. There are no cracks and no tears in any of them at all. I thought to take a photo of the bottom when I took the photos but I got side tracked and forgot.
I can describe them a little for you know (and I will take photos next time out) the bottom of the back rest is hollow and rectangular hole tapers up to a point near the top of the back rest. The sides at the bottom (base) are about 2 inches around. The back rests mount by way of thick plywood with holes in them that extend like tabs down about 4 inches in which bolts are stuck through and tightened down with a nut. The seats are plywood on the bottom (underside) and it looks like the vinyl is stapled to it all around with thick staples. There are a few wooden tabs (about 3 inch blocks of wood) screwed into the bases of the cushions (I presume to steady the seat in base that I need to build).:D
Gus:
Thanks, for the get well on the ankle. I think the windshield mod turned out better than I had any right to expect. I tried to use JB weld to seal the small gap like putty (but it ran and got a little messy). I was planning to paint the whole frame green anyway. I also thought about the plexi (it will be much cheaper for those little sides than the whole length of the cabin.:D

I never really liked them and changed mine to the old Chrysler style. I will post a picture later so you can see what I am talking about.

The link below is better than any picture I could take. I know throwing $$$ at a problem is not desirable but this has worked for me for many years and they are the most economical types available. Good luck!

Hey Guys
Can’t work on the boat for a while, sprained ankle was actually a torn Achilles tendon. Going to be limping for a while.
Talk to you a little later
Dave

Thanks Bill, I am looking at the thread now

Thankx Guys!

Those fuel fittings look just the ticket. Much better than the johnyrude design I think.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Dad and I used simple green and windshield cleaner wipes. Worked like a charm. Also a little simple green on a rough sponge to get in all the little "cracks" in the vinyl.
