Re: 1960 14' Seaking

Trailer day. 21 oustide and sunny outside. 68 degrees in the garage :)
Heres's the beast early this AM
seaking%2020101120%20001.JPG

I took a course twisted wire cone wheel to it in a 1/2hp grinder for about 4 hours. Hammered out some odd dents and twists in the fenders. I found the original load tag when stripping it down. Its also a 1960 Seaking trailer, rated for 1540 lbs! Should cover this boat, motor, and about any sort of gear you could ever image, don't you think? The trailer is actually a tilt-bed type, but the orginal pin was replaced with a 5/8 bolt somewhere along the line.

Primed with two coats of Rustoleum (two colors, just using up what I had in the cabinet

Letting this dry for the afternoon and hope to start top coats later in the day.
Plan to leave the running gear black and high-gloss white the rest of the frame. I have a new center roller for the back, and it needs a new bow pad for the winch.

Re: 1960 14' Seaking

Was able to get two top coats on late yesterday and again early this AM.

Last thing I did was to apply one more top coat of red to the fenders and then took these pictures.

Then, I opened the garage door to get some natural light so I could get a better photo and the paint had not quite set The cool damp air rushed in and the paint on the two fenders orange pealed  Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I'll sand them down and squirt them again later this afternoon.
Live and learn:redface:

Next step is to pull the tape, replace some rollers, and add some fresh lights. I need to pull the tires and hit the rims today as well. Then its back to the boat.

Re: 1960 14' Seaking

Any body have ideas about the outer hull. I have 2 plans and I can't decide:
1) Strip the paint and "polish" it up with a 3M scotchbright in a random orbital sander, and then just leave it that way. I'm pretty sure these boats had no paint when delivered in 1961.

2) Scuff up the paint that is there, use either a) Interlux VC and turn it white again and put paint the bow deck red with a red strip down the side at the water-line.

If I do #1, I'll just strip the trailer and paint it white. if I do #2, then I'll paid the wheel fenders red to match.

Im impressed with the Lightning speed of progress.. :)

VC white ? Offshore or 17 ?

Nice boat! take a look in the Starcraft section, back on Nov 2 there is a set of pics of a 1960, Starcraft "Bonanza" The conversation is titled "and another new owner" I think they look an awful lot alike. The 3 braces supporting the transom are differnt but that's about it. Have fun.

Redrover,
I'm pretty certain that the Seaking boats sold by wards in the late 50s to early 60s were made by Starcraft. I'd say your boat is just about a twin to mine, other than 1) your transom height looks to be a little more than this one. 2) the aluminum extrusion used for the gunwale caps. Otherwise, they are the same. Funny that I had planned on a white / red color scheme. I had not thought about the red area on the bow that you have.

Turtling: First, a couple of measurements to make sure the steering wheel would not get hung up on the trailer. Then I gave the bow line a little slack on the winch. I took the motor off. I slipped a 2x4 under the bunks, and then I lifted the boat by the back handles over my head and then brought it back down as I twisted my arms and brought her back to rest on the 2x4.

The SeaKing badges are riveted on, so I opted to just tape off. Tape on, razor around the edges, she's ready for primer.

Three coats of high gloss white. Need to run to town for four more cans. I can still see a little primer in spots
If all goes well, I can get another two coats laid down, and then get the red stripe applied to the sides and get her flipped back over yet this weekend.

When you say "Treated" if you mean like the Green stuff then DON'T. The chemicals will react with the aluminum. All you need is Regular Ext. Grade plywood with a couple of coats of epoxy or poly resin. I would recommend some 6oz cloth as well and then a couple of coats of Epiphanes varnish that has a HI UV protectant. IF you do this It will last as long as you have the boat.

Paint Job is looking nice!!!

I'm just sayin...:D

First stripe complete. Need to take a break for 24 hours before I can tape off the next stripe. This one was burgandy, the next strip is primary red.

Re: 1960 14' Seaking

Thanks, it took longer to tape up than I imaged. First, made a trip to town for some flexible tape (more than the paper stuff). I found some 1/2 vinyl that said it was for masking. I put about 4' of it on, and then tried to remove it. Disaster! the paint below had set for 24hrs, it popped off in spots spots. Fortunely, it ended up in areas where the stipe ended up being. So, I went back to the blue painter's tape.

Also, the over-spray travels everywhere. Even after I papered everything off, I had some over-spray creep in. I'm going to tape off tighter for the next stripe that will parrallel to this one.

I hope to get to it today, but we have lunch plans with family and I have some work to do for the "day job" that might get in the way.

Pull and clean tape... The camera isn't helping show off the 2 color scheme, but in natural light, it looks great to me.
