I would not varnish over the paint. It will yellow. I would not varnish over the vinyl for the same reason. Don't shake the varnish, stir it. Use a heat gun or a dryer to get the bubbles out.;)

Re: 1960 Luger Matador Restoration

So I have a bit of picture worthy work done I thought I would share. I got the trailer all wire wheeled and painted. I just used plain ole rust-oleum white for that and did the fenders in the Pettit paint I used on the bottom. Ran new lighting, and am now waiting for my new rollers and to install the new bunks. I got my white line painted on the hull, and the first coat of varnish down. And of course this moth thought it looked like a good place to land.... LoL it's looking really sweet now!! All the wood prep has been worth it to see it shine now. 4 more varnish coats to go and I think I will be done. Anyone with any recommendations as to how many varnish coats over epoxy?? And as always a little boat resto porn for you guys!

I had a few guys from the fire department come over today, the varnish had dried nicely and I figured it was a good time to flip seeming how I had the help. We got the boat turned over no problems, and back on the its cradle and into the garage without any issues!!!

Re: 1960 Luger Matador Restoration

So I have the floor down, I haven't decided which carpet to go with but I just have a grey outdoor carpet in for now. The interior seating has been dry fitted, and now will be removed for epoxy and paint. I epoxy and painted the inside of the boat also. Today I bought a couple sheets of sapele ribbon striped plywood and have been doing the decking. I laid down 1/4" strips of hard maple for a almost white center stripe. I have them stapled down and am waiting for the glue to dry now. I went with titebond III as on the hull planking. Hopefully I can get a few more pictures tomorrow for you guys but for now this is what I have.

Looks great, .

I know the staples are how it's often done, but how do you fill the pin holes once the staples get pulled?

Particularly on an open grain wood like Sapele or Mahogany, and not leave a 'halo' of filler around each filled pin hole?

Keep it up & this will definitely be a crowd gatherer everywhere she goes!

Re: 1960 Luger Matador Restoration

The staple holes filled in really well on the side planking after sanding. This all is a first for me, so we shall see Im personally hoping for the same thing on the deck. After several coats of epoxy the holes just disappeared. Maybe I won't get so lucky on the deck... The center stripe is hard maple, and then I taped and stained the sides. It is a huge color contrast right now but after the epoxy and varnish go down Im sure the colors will blend a little more. A few more pics for the masses. Thanks a ton for the support and kind words its great motivation!!!

Re: 1960 Luger Matador Restoration

Been a few long days the past few days but its been worth it! Man it is really starting to shine now!! I did my pin striping with a good quality vinyl pin stripe tape. Like Doug Hodder did on his Malihini build. Malahini ski boat plans pic418i and it came out awesome. I know some people will criticize that route but all I'm going for is a "look" not a genuine restoration. Remember I laid plywood down on the deck not strips. Anyways I think she's turning out awesome. I also got the gold fleck lettering for the name and think it looks amazing. I went with a company a few guys over on the Glen L site reccomended and man it looks amazing for a vinyl sticker. Here's a few pics for you guys.

You know, on second thought that boat is getting to be so UGLY I think I better come take it away so the neighbors don't start complaining. Don't worry I won't charge you a hauling fee or anything. I'm such a nice guy, I'll do it for free. Just leave it in the driveway and I'll hook on to the trailer and you'll never know it was there. I'm sure the neighbors will be glad that EYESORE is gone!! No need to thank me...Glad to do it!!!!

Man Woodon glass what a guy you are!! I tell ya I really had been nervous about what I was going to do with it, Thanks for saving me the problems and headaches of hauling it to the dump! The pretty lady looked at it the other day and said she was stunned with it and couldn't wait to get it out on the water!! So that's all the justification I need lol a project that I love to do and she's excited about using. Ya can't beat that!! Unfortunately I have to go back to work wend. I have been off since the 29th of June. I called it my boat building vacation :lol:I was really hoping to have it done, but as we all know projects take longer than we always hope. The goal is still to have it on the water before the end of the year. As always the words of Praise are great encouragement, thank you very much!! The updates will come a little slower now but hopefully not to long till you see water on the hull!!!

Sorry I have been slow on the updates. Work and life ya know. But I have been doing some work on her. I got the interior fitted and the carpet down. Sanded my epoxy on the deck and have three coats of varnish down so far. I also got the transom decal on, so I thought that was sufficient enough for picture time!

I'm hoping to have another coat of varnish down, install all the hardware, hook up lighting and steering and take her for her first ride this Sunday. So keep your finger crossed!!!
