Hey IM, better put a guard on that Falcon. If it wasn't so darn far away I'd be stealing it tomorrow night. Course now you've gone and hidden it at some remote cottage, but I've got a good nose.

Anyway, if you want to see the world of hurt my Falcon is in check this out. (http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=560654)

Re: MBS - Pretty Catchy These Days --- $80??? Whatchathink...

Ok. Had some time one day this past weekend to do the "Starcraft Stare"... and let me tell you... I was plume tuckered out after all that staring!!! Here's the deal... the way I see it, I really want to have this thing have a fishing seat up front, one at the back and two in the middle for driving. Problem is... I am not yet convinced that this possible given it's size nor really all that practical --- again for the same reason.

I was thinking of leaving a good chunk of the bow in place --- perhaps sortof double the gunwale width with a foot and a half also left at the very front. Then have a raised floor for the pedestal seat and storage below. The drivers console and passenger console would tie into the bow ---- sorta think cut an 24" section out of the center of the dash and follow the lines of the bow forward. 2 pieces of slant windshield would go in place for the passenger and driver.

This would kinda keep the lines from a far. And... I am going to add some interesting wood work to the dash, front and back.... sorta of a signature if you will.

Ok... whatchallthink??? I can take it! :D

Interesting proposition, not to harpoon the plan, but is a Falcon nearly the rarity of a Nova? Seems that there were several negative responses to the Nova to open bow conversions posted on the SC @CL thread.

Just asking, because based on the last rig you finished, it'll be great no matter the direction..... And back in use, no matter the form, is better then the alternative. 'Course I do like a nice frosty adult libation from a can too:facepalm:

Something along these lines:
DSCF1857.jpg

A Jupiter, but it was the 1st good shot of a bow......

It might not allow you to have very good access to the area under the remaining areas of bow cap around the edges of the cut out. But a dual console would be interesting, and there's a free twin console & windshield setup available in the SC parts thread.....
Free Starcraft parts FREE!!!!!!!!!!!
Consoles ..both sides...from a 1977 or 1978 Starcraft 16ft Supersport
consoles do not have the dash in front

1971 windshield...pexiglass needs to be replaced...

JB - Yes basically it... but may have to make a bit wider once past the consoles and square it off at the front rather than bring the cut out to a point.

Nice drawings!!! Thanks man!

See I have the windshield bits and the consoles ---- well they are going to be custom built... :D But thanks for the heads up!

Maybe Jas is lookin' for some windshield pieces...???.... :)

I have something in the works for windshields;)

I love the stare!

Ok... whatchallthink??? I can take it! :D

So wait....

Why wouldn't you just follow the lines of the gunwale all the way forward?

Also, I'm thinking this will be a pretty tight setup as a dual console eh?

With my beady little eyes... :D

Well.... a totally valid question... just thinkin' can I keep the principle lines/closed bow look that it has now, but have a functional single pedestal seat fishing area too? If I cut out the bow to keep the lines of the gunwale, then it is all open... see what I mean??? or has this humidity gotten to me?? :)

Yessir... but if I custom do it... me thinks I can make them narrow enough to allow for a regular human to fit through and get to the front --- I think. Prolly need some more SS time... :) But me thinks it can work.

Given the width of this boat... 2 guys fishing will likely want/need to sit in the center of the boat... No experience with a closed deck 14 footer...

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

I've been staring at my Falcon for the past month wondering if I want to take out the bow cover and build a deck up there, cause man I live for the fishing. But the more I look at it, the less practical it seems. The keel rises sharply just forward of the dash. Looks roomier in there than it really is because of the height of the bow cover. Drop a deck in there a foot below the gunwale top and all that room disappears. All though there will be room on the deck for a seat, support for it will be tricky. In the end I think I've decided that I bought the boat because I think it's lines are beautiful and classic and so I guess I'll keep her that way. But then beauty is only in the eye of the beholder and some say I'm cross eyed.

I'm there with you... I'm swaying back and forth... but given that I have a closed bow boat now and that I rescued this boat from the scrapper, I think that opening it up at the front, moving the dash back maybe a foot or so and utilizing the space up front for a fishing seat is the way for me to go here. The smallish duel console concept really appeals to me as well... so I just have to figure out how that will work... too bad the boat is 150 miles away from me right now! Hard to get SS time...

For the floor support for the raised section at the front, I will tie it into the U shaped bulk head that I will build that will house the two consoles... so support for me shouldn't be an issue...tricky at the front... but nothing that some rivets, angle iron and some measuring can't fix! :)

I'm curious to see how your's goes --- I'll get a little sneak peak before this one gets going in the fall.... just a summer disassemble and thinking for me!

you could sort of keep your original profile even with the open bow if you made up a custom tonneau cover for the bow area.

Hmmmmm....

Well, my gut is telling me you are trying to have your cake and eat it too;)

(That saying really makes no sense to me though. Of course I want to eat my cake!:D)

Anyway...

I think you are trying to keep the best of both and in the end I fear you might be disappointed. You wouldn't reaaaallly have an open bow and you wouldn't quite have a closed.

If it were me, I'd leave it closed or just go all in and cut it out for a nice open bow.

I dunno, I'm kinda all or nothing fella though:rolleyes:

I agree. I think you'll find it's best to do one set up, or the other. Of course, neither is perfect and each has its advantages and disadvantages so you'll have to decide what your needs are. If you want more of a fishing machine, remove the cap and install a deck. If you want to take the family out with a reasonable degree of comfort, you're probably best to keep the cap on. My boat was a late 50s/early 60s runabout very similar to yours, but I have since converted it to more of a center console, tiller drive flats skiff, which are very popular in my neck of the woods where getting into skinny water is the name of the game. It started life looking like this:

...but now looks like this:

The casting deck is rock solid and made from 3/4" non-PT plywood and stainless steel hardware. It is very stable even in a chop and the extra weight in the bow prevents porpoising. Best of all, it's at just the right height for getting on/off the boat at the dock and it lets me exit off the bow if/when I beach her. Keep us posted on your progress.....

Good thoughts there guys...

Part 1: While picking up the power pack for the 90 this evening I took a look at a couple of 15' Smokercrafts with side consoles... agreed: it is all or nothing. It really is smaller than it looks once it is opened up. That said, it is useable. So this one will be all.

Part 2: Dual or single console:

Got to thinking... what if the passenger side console was hinged above the floor of the front section so that it could be swung out of the way when moving about, but able to swing and lock in place when driving... hmmmmm never seen it before... but it interests me. With both consoles in place, it would be a pretty narrow walkway to the bow section. Just thinkin' out loud here. :)

PS: I do like cake and I like to eat it as well! :D

Yahuup ^^^. I'd not even mess with a second console.

Now why do I have such a serious hankerin for cake all of a sudden? So weird:D

Jim - This pic shows why a single side console is the whay to go. There's barely room for your two kids and you want moving around room for fishing.

I say open her up with a bowectomy, casting deck and one console. Of course this only my unbiased ( ) opinion

Alright....man... you guys have twisted both arms. Yah... probably the way to go. Man!

Summary:

- Bowectomy
- Side Console
- Some "Wood Work" to spruce her up a tad... :)
- Casting/Fishing seat up front
- Undetermined casting platform at back or just single pedestal seat...

All part of the planning process!

Thanks for the input guys! Much appreciated...

Jim, that's why we're here. To make you do things our way after we convince you it was your plan all along.

Case in point - look how many want to use Northern Therapy ideas in their tinnies. It works. :D
