Looks like you're well on the way with the restoration. just 1 suggestion I'd like to offer, that being, place some supports across the top of the hull (2x2,2x4 or what ever you have handy) from side to side, (near the front and the back) just to keep the hull from distorting. That hull will distort over a period of time thereby making the "top deck" of your boat "very" difficult to put back on.

You are absolutly right bailey, I will stop by home depot after work tomorrow and get some 2x2,2x4 from the scrap box. I love there scrap box, I can get the size I need for 51 cents each :D To bad they never have PT 2x2's, long enough for my stringers.

Re: 1961 14' runabout

Question about transom.
The transom was cut to accommodate a short shaft. The Force I plain on using is a long shaft. Do I 1. buy a transom jack or 2. just cut the PT plywood all the way across the top like it was originally? I like the price of the second idea better :D. But if I do the second idea, how do I build up the part of the hull that was cut .

Hay , well you have to re-glass the outer hull and then marine tex that !! then just glass in the transom like you would !! it would be the cheapest way out , there are a lot of guys on here that love the jackplate, i never had one of them so i cant tell you if there good or not , but number one sound like the best to me !! Re: 1961 14' runabout

I would return the hull to it's factory height transom. It's already cut, so the outer glass or cap is already compromised to some extent. I'd make the new transom full height, glass in the missing areas and make a good solid aluminum cap for the transom area.
I had an older Starcraft which had the transom cut, I replaced the wood, reinstalled the cap, filled in the missing glass, sealed the top and took a section of 1/8" wall 2x2" aluminum tubing and cut and machined it to fit. I simply removed one wall of the tube on a table saw. The motor had no problem clearing the extra width and it looked great. I also added a polished outside motor place that was just larger then the engine bracket for extra protection and to eliminate any intense body work blending in the patch.
Inside the splashwell I simply smoothed over the repair flaring it into the existing glass work. I also moved the splashwell drain to the side.

Although there are some benefits of a motor plate, they do add some stress to the transom and are costly. It can be a way to gain power tilt and trim if your motor lacks it though.

John, you have expensive taste and yes number one does sound like the best to me too. But reelfishin has a plain that will save me money & I like saving money:D. So number two it is! Also I forgot to mention that the cut off piece of the hull was still with the boat so this should make it some what easier right:confused: Please say right:(. And to answer the gelcoat question, the paint job is automotive paint with a clearcoat done by GUESS WHO, the Neighbor You should see all the runs  Still want his number:D

Good decision.
You're not talking major bucks.
I love the lines on this boat and this will help the asthetics.

Re: 1961 14' runabout

Thanks John for switching to #2, now that makes it unanimous that all are in favor for #2.:D
Kinda cold here in Virginia the last couple mornings :(. I don't have a garage so it looks like no glassing will be done this year. Does anyone know the minimum temp for glassing . I had plans to fool around with the engine today anyway. This is the first OP that I've had to really mess with it since picking it up last sunday. Have to pickup a gas tank, fueline, compression tester & sparkplugs this morning. May do some more grinding later in the day. I hate grinding that mask is HOTTT:mad:

Clearing up the windshield:confused: I saw a thread on this forum were someone used acrylic polish on there windshield (looked hazie like mine) and it was totally transparent afterward. But my windshield has soom cracks in it so I was going to replace it with one I found on craigslist for $60 but it's glass (a lot heavier than the plexie) . So before I make that move I thought I'd get some plexie glass from Home depot and make an attempt to make a templete, cut & bend it into the bracket :D

Re: 1961 14' runabout

I'll be watching this one. BTW that's a really nice looking engine. Enjoy your project. If you start to get burned out, step back for a while. I've been working on mine for about 2 years.

oh.. yea.. I remember reading about you picking up a glass walkthru windsheild

I was just curious, I have seen tons of old boats with those plexiglass windsheilds.. and always like the look of those.. but wondered how do you make them transparent again??

carry on my friend.. carry on..

2 YEARS  I gotta have this puppy on the water by the middle of spring. No way am I going to be land locked for another summer. I do feel you on the burn out thing because it is a lot to do and to think about. If I could do it with out having to think, things would go a lot faster I belive :D

Re: 1961 14' runabout

having never done a boat, I dont know if its the same as a car or MC

burn out is omni present... I always have a pic in my mind of what I want.
and how i want it. and i love feeling the wind in my hair..(at least for a few more years)

that keeps me going, but then.. i would much rather be in my garage wrenchin than in the house.....

I am a freak like that.. much to my wife's dismay.

one day at a time, one step at a time.. you will get it where you want it.
plus.. this forum is an awsome support group.
