Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Kenny, I have a question about the accent stripe. Won't it really not be visable much especially towards the back when its in the water?

and come on, you all know me i like to push everyone to get done, not because i want them to be done but because i want to see more pictures!

And Jeremy, it wasn't 2 weeks, it was 6...

Andy, it has to look good on the trailer for those moments when one can't get out...and this is a special blue paint...underwater it looks like irresistible bait ;)

Wow, the paint job looks great. And nice job selling the Imperial for what you did-- provides welcome funding for the new resto I'm sure.

So, my apologies if this has already been asked/answered in the thread already but if so, I didn't notice-- what's your opinion on restoring a glasser vs. a tinny, now that you've had plenty of experience on both? Is one easier than the other, or are there pros and cons to both?

LOL, I hear you, I'm thinking about handing out beer goggles to those who want to see her up close

Thanks Mike, When it comes to money...the wife's hands are faster than a magician's

The Glasser was definitely a learning experience{& I enjoyed 'most' every minute of it} but I'll never do another....hope that explains my thoughts :D

tinnys are by far easier than glass... for starters not having to cut out, grind down and glass in new stringers, and not having to tab the whole hull to the deck and not having to glass the transom to the hull... all MAJOR points to take into consideration.

I did deck and transom in mine in just a few days...

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

I made a trip to HD and bought some foam...plan is to sandwich the cheap stuff in between the pink{hurts to be poor}...

Kenny,

Don't use the white EPS. I build a variety of construction products with EPS -it is open cell - absorbs water and has NO floation value. For a small test take a piece out and pour a glass of water over it - the water will flow right through.

The EPS made for flotation is manufactured differently - it is closed cell. Coffee cup EPS is created in a special process that closes the cells.

No white EPS > having it.

Great job by the way!

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

Thanks guys, I've been racking my brain trying to come up with anything besides poo bear II :D

Oh, and thanks Broadcast for your offer of help...mighty nice of you, sorry I didn't acknowledge it earlier {brain fart}

Not much new today, rain showers have kept me pinned in the garage/shop...
Did manage to get the deck sheets cut. Had some fun as the old ones had begun to warp themselves to the landfill. Glad I could still use them{with a little persuasion} and I cut them a hair larger for final fitting when she's flipped & ready...

and yes, I beveled them ;)

All of this got me thinking about deck coverings....still undecided, I've had carpet in my last two tin cans and enjoyed it{even with the up-keep involved}, but after watching some of you guys and your vinyl...well.....decisions once again...if finances work out, I may just do both, with the carpet being snap-on/off...time will tell, or the wallet will lol

Re: 1961 Starcraft - 'The whole' story

First off I would like to say hello to everyone. I just joined iboats this afternoon. I was reading the forums and read the one about the 1961 Starcraft, how it was obtained and what the plans are for it.

I am sort of in the same dilemma. I just bought a 1967 Starcraft Jupiter, a 16 footer. I want to do a restoration / clean up job on her. Although not to the point of perfection. Just fix it up and make it look nicer than it is.

Reading the forum I noticed a post by Captmills with a picture of a lime green boat in the middle of the post. This boat looks exactly like the one I just bought.
What I would like to ask is, does anyone have any literature on this vessel, or where I might be able to obtain some.

The next question is the worst one. I was tinkering with the boat today, popped the floor out and filled it with water. I wanted to check for leaks before doing any painting. Unfortunately I found 64 leaks all the way around the boat, including the transome that the previous owner just replace. So I would like to know the proper procedure to follow to make this boat water tight again. I ask because I am not afraid to admit that I do not have much experience with working with aluminum. So any and all help and advice will be greatly appreciated. Also let me know if I got a good deal on this boat or not. I got the boat, trailer, one 50hp Force motor, supposedly running, one 50hp Force motor as parts, the trim/tilt control rebuilt by someone on this site. New in the box control cables. New switch, new bow light, 12 gallon gas tank, 1 year old 1200 gph bilge pump, new seats that are two years old, and new rims , tires , hubs and bearings that are a year old and supposedly only seen the water 3 times. Thank you very much for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

First..Welcome to the land of enchantment, lots of Starcrafters here along with plenty of
knowledgeable folks in any aspect of boat building you can think of.

Second thing, see here for all sorts of identifying & literature help http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=349830

Also there is a somewhat unwritten rule that you'll need to post some pictures before we can accept you into 'The Club' ...looking forward to seeing her.

You should start a thread of your own, of the work you plan, and of the progress along the way, so we can follow along and oooh and ahhh and possibly offer some tips along the way.

Rivets should be 'bucked'{do a search here or google} and then coated along with the seams with 'Gluvit'

Sounds like you did alright..whoops,.. it's a Starcraft, you can't go wrong

Hey Kenny,
If I buy a StarCraft do I have to change my name?:D;)
I also like the name for your boat.

Re: 1967 Starcraft Jupiter

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the link to help identify the Starcraft. Right now I am having some issues with the pc and attaching pictures to anything. As soon as it cooperates and lets me do what it should, there will be some pics going up.

Re: 1967 Starcraft - Pics

Can anyone give any help as to why I can't upload pictures on this? Also would like to know how to start a thread of my own, so I can keep adding pictures of the boat restoration progress as HopeSheFloats is doing? Thank you.
