uhh, you guys don't send all the nice wood south. at least some of it, not til it's made into guitars. the Quebecois firm of Godin produces the nicest guitars for the price in the world, and they use at least 75% Canadian wood. this will be an increasing deal now that tropical hardwoods are getting serious CITES protection. here's poop on their high end line:

LOL! B2 you crack me up man!! Funny thing is I happen to have a Simon and Patrick Luthier Git Fiddle!!!! Really does have a nice sound. My BIL has a Martin --- gotta say, it does sound pretty sweet too!

Good news is that there is A LOT of hardwood left in Quebec, Ontario and anything west of Calgary and Edmonton Alberta... so if the beatles and bugs and fires don't get the trees... there's plenty of wood left for many years of boat and guitar building!!

Alrighty fellas... a touch more progress last night...

So, I trimmed up the original dash a bit cause it was showing when I layered the new dash over it...


I also had one or two holes to patch at the stern....


Ya, ok... maybe two or three!!! I will JB weld from the back side whenever the 5200 sets. The 5200 was like thick milk... ran everywhere! I don't recall it doing this last year... maybe I'm just getting too old to remember these tiny details now!

Got the dash completely sanded and ready to go for spar....


Also roughed out a template for the seat back top... so I will have a board on top flat on top bent over the curve. That's the plan anyways.



Off to get some mulch for the back yard and a compression test on a motor.... so I hope this morning still to get a little more boat time to get the jb weld in and to get the gunwale top side pieces cut and sanded and if time permits, some of the seats structured... prolly a bit ambitious but that's what's next for now!

Still looking great... Looks like the seat back is at 90* to the gunwale, might slant it back at the top a bit for comfort.

You got the boat 'brightwork' planning & execution down! Really well thought out....

are ya worried about making it to hard to get to the rear of the boat though?

I do believe she's coming together real nice! I like your trademark work. A BMW has the kidney grille and you have a swoopy dash. Winter planning is paying dividends!

Thanks Gibbs! Naaaah... not worried about getting to and from the front.... got me a plan to incorporate a "step" behind the front seat instead of cutting the seat down, it'll just be a step over!! This way, the seat back is the structure which means nice and strong while being much lighter at the same time... keep posted to see!!!

Here is what happened this aft... my Dad dropped by with the motor for the Jet...



1979 Evinrude -- 2 hp. Runs like a top. 4 pulls off she went. Should move the jet along at ooooh maybe 6 mph!

The other choice is....



Unsure of the age... I'd guess mid 1940's --- pulls over, has compression... couldn't get it to start but fired.

Hmmmmm which one to put on as the main power source?????????????

PS -- Yup, the mulch is done as well as a property cleanup, plus a campfire with the kids that included serious marshmallow roasting with chocolate. Some call it smores. Up here in Canuk land, we (or at least I) call em Slesses!

You need this 1966 Evinrude SportFour 60 HP that was the original motor from my '66 Jupiter. It was winterized 5 or 6 years ago in Michigan and the original owner died shortly after. The motor has never seen saltwater and hopefully never will. I replaced it with a 1985 Johnson 115. Bad part with this motor is that it weighs about the same as the '85 Johnson 115.

That's an beaut... but in truth, I really do have a completely re-built 50 Johnny coming for this one! I was really just teasing that I was gonna put the 2 hp on it! But thanks for the thoughts!

Alrighty... a little more progress.

So, the 5200 is ALMOST cured... 3 days Yikes! Which means the transom can go back in tomorrow am and get bolted in place.

I got the top side gunwale boards cut and ready for spar (sanded and edges rounded on the inside top and bottom):


I also spent quite a bit of time sitting and testing the seating position to get it right. What I found was the most comfortable was to have the seat height at about 6.5" - 7" vs 8-9" off the floor. I was surprised at this... but at the higher position, it felt like I was sorta sitting on top of the boat rather than in the boat. Also, getting my legs under the steering wheel (and dash) was way easier just dropping the seat down that little bit. I also moved the seat back piece a little bit back --- couple of inches which made all the difference in the amount of room in the front... no longer is it tight.




I also got the middle piece for the back of the seat shaped and sanded --- just needs to be trimmed shorter once the gunwale pieces are put in place. I also figure out how I was going to support the seat back so that I can have the equivalent of the dash pad go across the top of the seat. See, there is a nice curve at either side of the boat above the dash at the gunwale edges --- I am going to duplicate this effect to create essentially a cockpit effect --- well that's the intent anyways!

I also figured out the structuring part of the back of the seat to accommodate the step. All good stuff....



So some tinkin', some doin' and some stewin'.... all in days puttering!

Its funny when i was planning out where i was gonna put my seats and how high they should be I had planned on my legs being stretched out in front of me going under the dash,( I was actually planning on making a footrest that held the anchor in place as well) but now that I have driven the boat I don't do that at all, I sit with my knees bend and kind of use my knees as armrests as i am steering, something to think about.

Get Jas to sign you up for his seat setup graphic rendering course, cause I'm either too tired or just plain stumped. I can't 'see' what your talking about for seat & step layout. I can usually figure it out pretty good from a description, tonight I got nothin'.

Sounds like a great plan though. Well thunk out fo sho :watermelon: given the great boat building track record around your boathouse.

Interestingly, I kinda do the same thing --- sorta one leg for resting an arm and one leg stretched out. Either way, there is room to stretch out or knees bent.

Thanks man! Hmmmmm.... It's really a challenge to try and explain something graphically... prolly should sign up for the course... or just get on with it and build it! Truth is that I can only go so far until I get the vinyl floor in... so I am kinda pre-fabing what I can and then working on other parts in the mean time. Still gotta do the electrical and run the steering cable, and get the transom/splashwell back in place BEFORE I get the seats all buttoned down.

Thanks BF! Just trying to "explore" a bit with what is possible with these boats! I enjoy adding a "wood" element --- kind brings it back to a time when boating was "fresh" and "new" and "exciting"! Sometimes different works. Sometimes it doesn't. I really am hoping that this is one of the times where it does!

Alrighty... after an interesting last 7 or 8 days at work... I opened the garage doors, qued the music and got to work!

Got all the wood for the inside with the exception of the sun deck cut and most of it sanded...





Felt really good to get back at it and get some good move forward progress...

Used a very handy xmas gift from my folks to cut the most of the center out of the transom cap I need to make...




See, the one I have is for a Jupiter (Jup I). Trouble is that when I went to bend it, well... I broke it. Ooops! So... got thinking, maybe I will try making my own and see how that goes. Should be interesting... I'll post some more pics when it really starts to take shape.

I was able to chisel out the inner part of the grooves I cut with the saw and test fit it on the transom... it fit great. Lots of sanding to do yet!

Still waiting on the floor... long story... but hopefully it will be coming soon!!!
