I always wondered what it looked like with the original paint, now I know! There was just a trace amount of red left to indicate what color mine was.

You have a great project ahead of ya, I love tinkering with mine!

A nice looker, should be a fun project. Excellent bonus on the trailer too. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it all. I think you'll like the way that 50 sips the gas as long as you're not always flat out.

Bummer on the lower, but a good welder can fix that no problem :)

the 80hp that came with my Nova has a weld fix that looks air tight.

The down side is you will need to strip the lower... (I think)

Yah...it leaking gear case oil out and I can see the crack open and close when I move it... When I return from the lake i'll snap some shots to give everyone a clearer picture. Top end looks brand new... Really is virtually spotless!!! One way or another it'll live to run again!!

Anyone know if I can swap the inards to a long shaft doner to keep it a short shaft... Hope that makes sense... It's a short shaft unit now... But most Lu are long shafters....

Typing on my phone ya know!!!

Cheers!

From the mercs I have, the lowers are the same other than the drive shaft.

but if I recall correctly... you have to remove the prop shaft in order to get the drive shaft out...
so you might as well replace all the seals while your at it, and have the other LU welded while it's apart (just say'n lol )...

What Gibbles said. The mid-section and drive shaft are shorter. The water tube and shift shaft are already in the mid-section. You should be able to get an empty L/U housing and swap the shaft and guts. If you can see the crack opening and closing  not a good sign. Might be hard to weld it up straight. And maybe not, what do I know?

Dag nab it, I was really hoping it was a surface manufacturing flaw.....

What yr/ser# Merc is that? You could look thru the 500 Mercs over here & run down the LU years that match up to yours, but it'd be quicker to just post up in the Merc forum..

Hey Jim, bummer about the L/U, I have a good complete one with new water pump off of a 1980 70hp 3 cyl if it would work.

Hey Glen... not sure there but thanks! I will have to post something over in the merc section today to see what bottom ends will work with the model I have.

Sounds like an interesting plan... If I can find a LU in better condition for something akin to reasonable... then that will be my preference... in the mean time I think I will pull it all part anyway just to familiarize myself with the the LU... not a merc guy ya know!! :D Gonna be one soon I suppose! :)

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Ok guys... the Jet is going to be a build for a co-worker of mine! So, while I get to build it... I won't be keeping it... but... I know where it will be! It will be extremely well taken care of!!!!

So with that aside, the Merc 500 is not going on this boat. I am going to keep it and fix it for myself! We are going to find something quite a bit newer that will be much more of a "turn key" power solution. The merc is something I will tinker with and in all honest may put on the Falcon! Given that it is lighter than the 40 rude that came of the falcon, it may be a very nice power solution! (Man --- not last week did I say that I was going to go with a new etec!!!! :).... well stay tuned folks! It's always interesting!

Congrats

If the co-worker helps with the rebuild does the price go up? Probably should.......

Looking forward to seeing the Merc put to good use on the Falcon!

Thanks... I think!!! :)

Co-working lives in South Jersey... so it's a bit of a commute to meet and work at 4:00am! It'll be fun to do no matter!

Yah... the merc'l live... just on my boat!

I was conflicted, ya know, agreeing to sell before the work is finished was a challenge for me. Still is BTW....

If you want to sell the Jet & are looking forward to the project, whole-hearted CONGRATS!

Just like when you considered an open bow. Would not have been my choice, but not my boat ;)

So yeah, congrats! Besides, having a buyer for the Jet, opens a slot in the boat house if you run across a MUST have Feathercraft or big finned tin!

Truth: It was planned this way from the beginning... I was looking for a boat for him.

Reality: I really love building so... it's nice to save these boats --- whether for one's own use or for someone else! It also helps fund the Falcon!!

And agreed... there will be a feathercraft at some point... right time, right place... just got align the stars man!! :)

It sounds like InMotion is turning into a clone of dozerII. Building 'em for others now. :D
