Good to know. I will go to the place in midland for the vinyl when the time comes. Sewing straight lines will be a challenge for me among other things. I'll be sure to re-read your thread on sewing before starting!!!

Well..... I am going to build the seats out of wood --- bench at the back and then two individual seats at the front. Then have seat pads for the bum and the back for all three! Think like an old school cedar strip boat!

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Interestingly, I stumbled across a really cheap, environmentally friendly and fast way to strip the bottom of the boat! A few posts ago I said that the cheap stripper I was using didn't work... well I thought I would try an experiment this morning. I literally poured the stuff onto the hull and then using a paint brush, smeared it leaving big globs of the stuff everywhere. I left the electric oil heater on medium for the day and tonight around 8:45pm snuck outside and tried to strip the paint off using a metal 2" wide drywall tool... low and behold the paint literally fell off the boat!! In less than 40 minutes 80+ % of the hull is completely stripped! Cost: less than $4.00! Time: less than 40 minutes of labor! Environmental impact: Virtually nill... this stuff worked terrific with no toxic chemicals!

Just thought I would share that... getting the paint off is a normally a big pain and I'll tell you, I will have the boat stripped for less than $15 and way, way quicker than before with way, way less effort! I ran out tonight... but I am going to pick some more up tomorrow and pour it on Wed morning... I'll report back with the results to see that they can be duplicated.

Have a great evening fellas!

I'm sure you have royally pi**ed off many forum members with this post! :D:D:D Would like to rewind the clock two years and see this post! Congrats, you may have just exponentially increased the number of renovators & re-painters we will see on here, iboats should give you a freebie for that. What's the stripper brand? (Maybe the secret ingredient is patience, which I can be short on.)

No doubt!!!! I checked this morning on the little bit that I had left that I put on last night... paint again fell off the boat literally! Man... I look forward tonight to get to remove more paint! It's enjoyable! I'll post some pics tonight. Stuff is called Safe Strip --- you can see the stripper jug in a pic a few posts ago... it's the little one --- not the red tin one.

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

I did the same thing on my last aluminum Starcraft. I used some cheap "environmentally safe" paint stripper that I assumed would be garbage, applied it on the boat with a roller and left it on for about a day and a half (not intentionally, got distracted with a Jeep project). I didn't want to leave the paint stripper on the boat and was too lazy to scrape the paint off at that time so I spent about 10 minutes with the pressure washer and the paint came right off. I figure if I ever end up stripping the paint off my '66 Jupiter I will try that method again. Best part is the pressure washer leaves no additional scratches in the hull.

Hey JC --- using the pressure washer would work great in my case too! Stripping the paint off in the main areas is cake --- but going around the rivets is slower. As a point of reference it has taken me a total of 1:45 to do half the boat to the point where it is ready to be washed for polishing. Also it took 3/4 of one 1 litre jug.... for a total of $6.00. Way, way cheaper. Way, way easier.

I hope that your info and what I have provided helps others as well!

Pic's tomorrow.

This is some good info that I wish I had in hand 2 summers ago. The only thing I didn't use was patience...DOH

STRIPPING TIME:

Ok... here's the pic's so far.... 1 side is 90% done and the other about 75% done. Got a little time this morning --- maybe 45 minutes and did the 75% part!

This is the 10% left part at the bow....and under the splash rail (or more acurately on the top of the splash rail if the boat was upright!)

IMAG0644.jpg

It really needs to be washed down... but most of the paint is gone now.

So the question is how far to strip the paint up the sides so that it ends appropriately at the bow... what's your thoughts fella's?

PS - Who's sending this snow this way -- was 60+F yesterday and now this...

You can have the snow, we don't want it. How far down the sides do you plan on painting? to the top of the chin strip? If so you could carry that line around the bow on the reinforcment piece above the bow eye.

Chewgotitman! Yup... just above the chin strip... although I am going to strip the paint up the first lapstrake from the stern to about half way towards the bow as the paint is really cruddy from the water.

Stripped!

Quick Update here... Ok... all done (with the exception of a 4" x 4" piece just above the bow eye hook... which will get done tomorrow am!).

Just need to get it properly washed/scrubbed up this weekend and polishing can begin.

One other thing I should mention is that it isn't just the time the goop is on the boat, it's the qty of goop(some how using the word "stripper" instead of goop in that sentance didn't quite seam appropriate!). On the sides the goop just runs off rather quickly... on the hull you can really layer it up. Time and qty are the key ingredients.

Scrubbed:

Yup... this Canuck braved the near freezing temps, rain, and clouds?!! Fully scrubbed and washed and ready for polishing! It actually went quite well and quickly ---- but it was brisk! I accidentally left some carpet rolled up under the bow of the boat wedged between my boat dolly and the bow it got... well... drenched! So, next step is that everything is drying out and then I will bring the boat back in the mini shop for polishing!

There you have it... the messy part is done... oh yah I forgot that the next part is also rather messy too! :)
