Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

It appears that Photobucket is experiencing technical difficulties... so I'll post this anyways and then insert the pic's later...

Got the boat gutted this early am with the exception of the splashwell and the transom board! So... tomorrow morn I'll get those two items done. Then it's flip time and on to stripping the hull!

Also just have one last coat to put on the cottage corner cabinet...

Some of you may have seen this... but check out Ken Block in San Francisco...

And I hope this gives you a little Sat morn chuckle... (supposed to be a pic... I'll insert as soon as it's available!)

Have a great Sat fellas!

Been down most of the roads & in most of those places in San Francisco......

Never even remotely in an a way that could even begin to be described as driving, if you can even call what Ken Block was doing driving

Jeez, tire shredding may be more accurate. It costs a fortune to shut down a block in San Francisco, can't imagine what it cost to close a bridge & all those streets...

But man, that video rocked!

Made a trip to the cottage to take the trailer up and close it down today... so sorry for the delay... but the pic's are now up in the last post...

And ya... Ken B. is a complete mad man... but super awesome driver! Glad you guys enjoyed it... my kids loved it as did I!

Have an awesome night guys!

How did you make out with the big bolts, did they relent to the wrench or the grinder?

Gonna grind them a little later this morning when I am not at risk of waking up everyone in the neighborhood! Did not budge this morn with the wrench... Super foggy here this morn and quite... so best to work on tasks that are quiter! :) I like my neighbors!

Ok... a decent sized update here...

Got the bolts out last night... about half way grinding the stink out of the first one I realized it was futile to try and cut the heads clean off and just simply ground the heads down to the size of the shaft and pounded the bolts from the inside out the back off the boat!

IMAG0608.jpg

You can see that my first attempt resulted in a fair bit of scoring to the wood...
IMAG0609.jpg

By the second bolt (left side of the photo) I had more or less got the process down...
IMAG0610.jpg

Tools for the job:
IMAG0611.jpg

Once I got the big bolts removed from the drain holes, I thought I would snap a photo of the top of the transom board. Both the front and top look great.... but...
IMAG0613.jpg

Hidden in the corners is a fair bit of rot... which is why it so important for all those who think their transom board is solid and is original to really, really check it out. I have read many threads where folks think it is fine... but if really checked out they more than likely will find that there 35+ year old transom board should be replaced!

On to next thread.....

Part 1 continued....

So I removed the 1 million bolts out of the transom --- prolly closer to 20 ---- most came out pretty good actually. Some were a tad more stubborn. I realized that my left had is not that strong yet... so it was a bit of a challenge on the port side of the boat getting the bolts out. But no worries... and here is the transom board out!

IMAG0616.jpg

It was a bit stuck at the bottom of the gunnels. I hammered in a large flat screwdriver end and pryed it about a bit and the board came out much easier after that. Had to use the sledge as usual.

Looking remarkably clean...

Great template beside a almost completely striped down Merc 500.

So there you have it! Boat is ready to be:

- Washed out on the inside.
- Gluvited
- Flipped and Stripped
- Polished
- Flipped and inside rebuild begun!

More to come in the next little bit!

Have a great day fellas!

A planned attack and you came out victorious! You'll be glad to have that old transom board for a template. It's all in the planning..and then the muscle. Gotta love the Jets, they're built like a brick $%&*house!

Great job Jim, making good progress, makes you really wonder what the PO was thinking when he plugged the splashwell drain with those bolts.???????

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Hey guys,

Thanks a bunch! Yah still baffled as to why the PO did that... even found out he drilled another 1/4" hole in the bottom of the splashwell to drain the port side if the boat was listing that way! Really funny thing is that there is no bildge hole on the boat! So if there was one, he must of had the hose just flopped over the side or back somewhere!

My hand is healing up great! The big issue is that it doesn't bend to well in certain directions --- so I actually couldn't get it to fit up in the gunwale! Oops! So I just rigged up the socket with my right hand and then kinda wedged my left had part way in to hold the socket in place! It was a bit odd but it worked --- just don't tell the Admiral about the gash I got above the thumbnail by trying to wedge my hand in that way!!! :(

Making some forward motion now... :)

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Well... been a busy but good weekend. Got a little progress on the boat --- had my Dad's surprise 70th birthday at our house this weekend with 35+ people ---- so lots of activity!

So got some of this stuff yesterday --- bout 3-4"...
IMAG0622.jpg

So today it was a tad warmer and things started to melt off a bit and allowed me to scrub the interior of the boat and get it ready to flip this week!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Hey Jim, what's that white stuff? Did you blow the floatation foam out of the garage onto the street?

The Jet looks ready for action. Glad the hand is closer to 100%.
