Glad you got evrything lined up ready to roll, careful with the hand. I don't think you are any to soon, I had to fire up the Ford 7000 yesterday to move snow, four foot drifts what a mess, been a rough couple days. Manitoba is getting it today then it is moving east.

Starcraft Jet - Rebuild
You do have a lot more room remembering the N.T. build with the rock track. Careful with the hand, IM.

Agreed. I am doing my best to take it easy on it... but stuff's gotta get done before winter hits...! Little at a time!

4 Feet!!! Yikes!!! Hate to tell you this but it is 60+F today!!! Put the xmas lights up/cleaned the eavestrough's etc etc etc... feels like a nice spring day.... guess it's going to be short lived... unless it stays north!!!

Just taking it easy with the hand... I've kinda learned to use the right hand for most everything and only light duty stuff if at all possible!

Hopefully the weather gets better for you Glen!

holly cow... Inmotion that's some cut. I had an accident while fishing a few years back.
Hit my funny bone sliding down a bank....
Lost the feeling in my little finger for a year..
It came back as I'm sure your thumb will.
Shook to the nerve, might be the same thing for you.
Heal up as I have been lurking and need my starcraft fix from time to time.

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Ok... started on the Jet this morn... immediately ran into a challenge! Check this out... I mentioned it a while back that this was a silly thing to do... actually I get what they PO was trying to do... protect the transom from rot... but really?!!! :)

Notice the 11/2 bolts through the two splashwell drain holes.... not the best idea IMHO!

So I tried using a pipe wrench with an extension and my wrench on the inside head and absolutely no go... would not budge! Tried the liquid wrench.... no go. Gonna leave it for the day and see... otherwise, pending any other suggestion, I was going to cut the head off on the splashwell side so as to not damage the hull.

Check this other shot out... again, creative, but not bright... drilled a hole in the bottom of the splashwell to let the splashwell drain INTO the boat... a creative solution to a problem that should never have existed in the first place!

I mentioned that the Falcon has a new winter resting spot... up behind the garage... kids were a little miffed that their swings are of no use... but I countered with the fact that they can now tobboggan down the hill and driveway where the Falcon was sitting! They were happen with that!

Have a great day fellas...

Good luck on that bolt Jim. Don't under estimate that liquid wrench... give it a day or two to work and just keep spraying it on there every 8 hours or so. Is there any way to get an impact air wrench in there?

Possibly use some heat?

Or plunge cut thru the bolt & transom w/ a grinder? Cutting on an angle, you're unlikely to risk nicking the exterior skin & wont be near the surface where you might nick the splashwell..

Thanks CJ. Unfortunately, I don't have an impact air wrench... so it's manual mode for me. It is approx. 1 1/2" nut... so a decent size and really rusted. It's been on for a long time.

Gotta take the splash well out anyway... so I figured I would take it out and then attempt grinding the heads off with the wooden transom as the natural backer protecting the alum transom skin.... see how it goes. If I get a chance, Wed or Thurs I will give it a go and see where I get.

Thans for the thoughts --- both you and CJ.

Hey Jim, those bolts could be a real bummer to get out, they have had a long time to collect rust in the threads. A little bit of heat with a propane torch will sometimes help the liguid wrench seep into the treads. You have quite a good hill in your back yard!!

PB-Blaster (or Kroil if you can find it) & impact wrench would be my first option. My second option would be grind the head (or nut) off the bolt on the outside & remove the wood transom. The aluminum will flex enough to get past the remaining 1/8" of bolt sticking out. If reusing the wood, use an air hammer to get the rest of the bolt out.
If you don't have the air tools, this would be a great excuse to buy them and you will have them for future projects.

They must have had way too much water coming thru the splashwell drains in rough seas and were too cheap to purchase two scupper valves?

They look that way... been there for a while for sure!

Yah... it's fairly steep... when we first moved in it was all mud.... fun for the kids... but not so fun for us when they came in the house! Over the years, we've brought down 100's of rocks from up north and bottom feeder terraced the hill. Plus I built the fort for the kids which is well used!

I'm thinking the grinding option if the bolt won't loosen off. I have the grinder and I'm kinda partial to using the tools that I have if at all possible! At some point I will get some air tools... but for now, it's not something on the plate! :) But great ideas!

The PO had must of known more than SC about splashwell drainage design... or he was just not thinking it all the way through. Not as bad as drilling a hole in the hull and then permanently running the bildge... but getting close!

I use heat on stubborn rusted bolts. Liquid Wrench/PB Blaster for a couple of days then heat, brute force and ignorance. If that fails then yea, off with their heads.

Good luck.

Re: 1964 Starcraft Jet - Rebuild

Good news guys, I was able to get out the shop for the first time this morn --- the hand is healed to the point where it is good to go for working with! Amazing how quick it has sealed up AFTER the stitches came out and just being exposed to air for 2 days!

No boat work this morn --- but I did finish sanding the cabinet, built the front door for it, installed the trim and urethaned it 1 coat. So, couple more coats and it's all done and out of the shop. The boat is next up in the project list!
