Re: 1965 Johnson Tri-Hull restore!

Cut out the rest of the parts tonight to build the rest of the roller supports. Got two finished last night, well almost just need to drill a few holes and paint, but they are all welded up.

Cross tube welded on.

Got allot more done toning, but worked till 11:45pm.

Frame all painted except the front nose piece, since I have a bit of welding to do on it once I can turn it around.

Wheel's all painted, these rims were not in the best of shape, kinda rough but serve the purpose for now, just wanted to keep the spending to a min.

Supports all done, and painted. Got the cross hole drilled, first layed out the hole, then drilled through both sides with a 1/8" bit, then used a Uni-bit to bore the holes out, you get a much nicer perfect round hole that way, drill bit doesn't get a real nice hole.

Finished making the pins tonight as well.

Drilling the end hole for a cotter pin.

If you've ever tried to drill a hole in round steel rod, you know you've pulled your hair out trying to not get the drill bit to wander, if ya don't have these get some. Called a starting bit, works wonders for starting the hole.

A good setup helps too.

Squaring and chamfering the ends on the lathe.

All done.

Starting to look like a trailer again. That piece of C-Channel aluminum will be a walk way, haven't bolted it down yet.

I could, but I had that C-Channel givin to me, and I think that's all I need, don't really need it to be really wide. Just something to walk on there will be nice.

Thanks!

Maybe wider is better, but I'm not doing it.

LOL, this isn't a democracy? :p

LOL, NO.

Myself I really don't see the need for wider, I'll have no problem walking down that. Before I had nothing, and had to walk the tight rope down the side of the trailer.

Nice coat of Red Oxide Primer on the frame now

Hey Parris, I've been reading through your thread over the last couple of weeks - awesome job on the boat, and the trailer is looking amazing...

Quick question - to use the red oxide primer, how clean does the metal have to be - does it have to be down to bare metal before you can apply the primer? I guess I'd be interested in hearing about your system for cleaning the metal, priming, and painting...

Keep up the great work!

Hey, sorry I guess I really never touched on that part, all I did was use a 4" angle grinder with a wire wheel, I used the heavy duty wire wheel, they type that is is twisted together. Looks like this.

So I did not have it all to bare metal, though it would be better, however that's allot of work. I was going to have the whole thing sand blasted but they wanted $500, so I said forget that. As for painting I just use a cheap brush.
