Clamps off, looks good, now just need to fillet the edges, then a layer of mat, then I'm going to tab it in with some 4" 1708 tape.

How long did you keep it clamped for?

Re: 1965 Johnson Tri-Hull restore!

Hey guys been a while, not been too active on here this winter, I still read most days though. Boat has been dormant all winter, now its starting to warm up, and thinking about things. The trailer needs some serious help, structurally it is very sound, but all the rollers are crap and most don't roll!! LOL. And one side of the trailer was slightly lower, so new springs and all new rollers will be done, started today on it. I'd really like to paint the trailer but I have no where to take the boat off and leave it, so it'll have to stay as is for now.

Old spring, button on the bottom is much smaller then the new springs. Going to be a problem where the spring sits because the hole isn't big enough on the axle to take the new spring, and I don't want to drill into the axle tube, the seat isn't very thick.

So out to the metal place for some 1/2" thick steel plate, the spring is 1 3/4" wide, but you can't buy flatbar in that thickness, so had to buy 2" but that's wider then where the bolts go through. So had to mill it down.

New plate over the spring clamp, you can see it overlaps the holes.

So onto the lathe with the milling attachment. Took .045" off each side of the plate.

Then I drilled a 1/2" hole in the center of the plate, which isn't big enough of a hole, I don't have any bits bigger then that, so onto the lathe to bore out the hole bigger, I know its overkill doing it this way, but why not, I have the tools and, it'll be perfect.

Plate is all done, now its perfectly square and a nice perfect bored hole.

Got the boat off the trailer and got the trailer mostly stripped, turning into much more work then I anticipated, isn't that how it always goes though.

All the hardware is getting replaced, its all rusted, so I just cut everything off, not going to **** around trying to undo totally rusted seized bolts. Going to wire wheel it all down and paint it as well.

Next pic, spent a couple hours today with the angle grinder and a wire wheel. And finished stripping the trailer.

Is anyone watching? Any interested in seeing the rest of the rebuild?

No, I'm not watching and you can't make me! No matter how much interesting and informative stuff you post, I refuse to watch and or comment on the outstanding work you are doing. :p

Just found this thread today, everything you did looks fantastic. I've just begun my project, you gave me a lot of valuable advice.thanks.

BTW, my trailer needs work too, so make sure you keep the trailer updates coming!

Yup lots more to do. One of the roller supports is rusted and needs replacing, and I'll have to make it from scratch, and all the other roller mounts need to be modified somewhat to accept the new style rollers that I'am using. I'll make sure to document it a little closer then. One thing I noticed today was the axle wasn't square to the frame, and the right front roller support wasn't the same height as the left.

You bet Parris!
Keep up the good work.
I'll be coming up on painting my boat in about a month and will be doing the trailer over while the boat is flipped and on a cradle while painting the hull.

Nice coat of Red Oxide Primer on the frame now. Just had to stick a space heater in the garage, kinda cold for the paint to dry properly.

Re: 1965 Johnson Tri-Hull restore!

Started working on the roller supports today while the paint dried. Originally was just going to replace 1, then saw another that was "weak", so going to make 2 of them, now thinking might just make 4 more then they'll all be new, and the same.

Old rusted out one.

New square tube cut to length and end cleaned for welding.

End support.

Ready to weld on.

End welded on! I enjoy welding.

attachment.php

Both ends done.

attachment.php

3/4" id steel pipe goes in the two end supports. Then 3/4" steel rod will go through the pipe, I needed the pipe to stick out either end and will have large washers after that, because the new rollers are inset on both sides.

Thanks, yes welding is another thing that takes practice. I'm no pro but can do a good job. I'm using a Tig welder for the welding.
