Re: 1967 80hp johnson outboard
I have an old selectric here...

nightmare things they are...

There are two big electro magnetic clutches attached to toothed gears in the foot of your gearcase.. they both spin free of the probshaft when no power is supplied..

depending on which clutch gets engaged, the proshaft locks with that gear and the prop will spin in that direction..

ditto with the other clutch.. but don't connect both at once or you could damage something..

The clutches do some weird stuff.. and they get chewed up on the mating surfaces...

I took mine apart years ago, and after a clean up, I swapped the forward and reverse clutches around. (they were identical, but reverse was less worn out.)

It worked for ages, but I also had problems with the wiring to them down the inside of the leg..

IT had deteriorated and then melted on the exhaust.. got stuck out on the water with an outboard that ran, but would not go into gear..

I got around that by drilling a hole above the foot and running the wires up the outside of the leg, epoxied into place..

It worked, but it was god ugly..

In your case, you will need to drop the leg off and pull the foot apart, take off the prop, there are 4 screws inside the end you need to get out. (an impact driver would be handy.) once those four screws are out, you should be able to slide the assembly out.. watch out for the wire guard holding the clutch wires out of danger, you will have to use a screwdriver to hold the guard back while you slide the gear assembly out..

I did it, and without a manual.. so anyone can..

Some notes.

1. When you slide the leg down.. watch out.. mine had roller bearings on the shaft and they fell out.. you need to catch them all.. (use grease to hold them in place when its time to reassemble.)
2. Check the water pump impeller while you have the leg down.
3. Watch how the wires run down the leg when you put it back together.. (be sure they are well away from the exhaust.)
4. There will probably be bits of the clutch material stuck in the clutch assemblies.. be sure to get it all out. (it may be what is causing the problem.) make sure there is no metal floating around the clutch coils.
5. Take careful note of how everything came apart so you can reverse the proceedure to reassemble. (I take photos with my digitqal camera at each step.)

Thats all I remember offhand, as I said, it was a long time ago.

A manual would no doubt have made the proceedure much faster for me.

rgds

Franki
