I am trying to decide if I should restore this boat and also want to verify what it is.
I can't find a Hull number or tag. I'm told it is a 1968 Starmaster 18' hull is oxidized but seems solid.
Transom seems solid but wood is aged and paint peeling. It has a 1982 Evinrude V4 that runs, but needs new fuel tanks.
The wood floor is rotten and covered with disinegrated blue In/Outdoor carpet. I can walk on floor but it is weak.
The front V -hold has a snap flap and it is stuffed with life jackets that smell like rats or cats or?
I can't see under floor. I've never rebuilt a boat, but I've rebuilt auto engines and motorcycles, installed laminate floors and have lots of tools and painting DIY experience.

Just not sure of how much time and money this will involve as I still have a 48 Chevy pickup in pieces in garage and an 82 Honda CB900f that needs attention.
I love these boats though.

What model is it?
Looks cool is it a keeper?

It is a cool boat, and it'll restore fairly easily... but it will take time and money.

If you decide to buy it, it'll keep 'til you get time and money to work on it. You can look at some of the other aluminum boat resorations on here and geat a rough time frame of how long it'll take.

Thanks for the input- how much time and money do you think it will need? Just a range would be fine.
Anything I should look for that would be big bucks and bad news?
I would like to verify the year and model, anyone know?
Where should the hull tag be?
I looked at rear of transom and don't see anything.
Also no Starcraft name plates or labeling.

Time and money depends on how much you want to do to it... what do you want to do with it? Just get it functional, or do you want functional and pretty? Obviously functional will be quicker and cheaper than functional and pretty.

All right mate!

Check here to ID your rig...

http://forums.iboats.com/starcraft-boats/starcraft-brochures-349830.html

...and then check here to get an idea of a time and $$$ commitment...

http://forums.iboats.com/starcraft-boats/starcraft-rebuilds-restorations-theyre-all-here-494143.html

Tons and tons of information on those two links alone. That will probably keep you busy for a while:joyous:

As I look at your photos it looks like you have all the important pieces intact (including the windshield) so rebuilding her may be a fairly straight forward job (so long as you don't jump into hull modifications and such).

All the best:tennis:

Thanks for the help.
I've been looking at the brochures and other Starcraft and I wonder if this is really a 1968 as the registration says?
It looks a lot like the 1963 Starcraft Holiday 18' because of the rounded one piece windshield. Looking at other rebuilds, the 68 and 69 Holiday I saw had flat windshields in sections.

Where can I find the Hull tag?
Maybe it was removed?
I'm going to pick up the boat today or tomorrow and I will have the registration, but it would be good to verify it matches the boat.

Yup, ^^^ don't bother looking.

No biggie, you are hauling home a nice old metal boat and are in the ballpark. I'd just run with whatever it says on the title/registration (so long as it doesn't say something dum like 1982 Bayliner Capri).

If it does read Bayliner Capri, Jas & his merry band of power tools will be along shortly to assist you...

If it's in original paint, the color scheme is often very helpful to determine a year. Many were 1 year only on any particular hull.....

In All Honesty,...
The only thing that matters for that ole hull, from here on out, is what it's Paperwork says....

'course, like the guys are implyin',...a fiberglass registration is hard to pass off on a tinboat...
Starcraft, Starmaster, Stairclimber,... it don't matter,....

I think yer probably Right, in that it's an early Holiday,...
Sweet little boat,....

A near, 'n dear ole Friend of mine had 1 for years,...
He got it as salvage, it fell off a trailer, goin' down the interstate...
We split it open, 'n Beat the big dents out, painted it up, 'n Wally used it for years, 'n Years....

Re: 1968 Starcraft 18' or?

Im going to pick it up in morning. It's on a Lil Dude galvanized trailer with 13" wheels and it has an 82 Evinrude 90hp V4.
I assume they are a 2 stroke? I'll try and start it. Should I use 50:1 mix?
Any idea how much the package would weigh? I'm going to pick it up with my Classic 93 Winnebago 25' motorhome its a healthy 454.
But I'm wondering if my 2005 Pontiac Montana 3.4L V6 would pull it OK?

I must be nuts, but I think there may be a tin boat magnet in my head some where.
I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve.

If you attempt to start the motor, don't do it dry, water muffs or a barrel (preferred) full enough to cover the water intakes.

The brochure pages, although hard to read, have weight specs on them...

I would think you would be fine witht the Montana --- I believe they were rated for 3500 lbs - passenger load. Your new rig shouldn't be more then 2000-2200 max would be a fair guess with all of the gear it may come with.

Nuts? Nah.... just a tin head! :)

Re: 1968 Starcraft 18' or?

I had my facts wrong this boat is actually a 1967 on the registration.
There must be a Hull number stamped on it somewhere? Most likely I will at least have it on the registration.
Also the color scheme is very close to a 67 Holiday 18' I saw for sale but it is an I/O. However the 67 in picture does have a flat multi frame windshield.
I'm also looking for a bimini top.
I've attached a pic of the paint scheme the 67 I/O that was for sale.

Like Bond-O says, it's not really important. But w/ the bubble wrap around windshield, I doubt it's a 1967. The I/O you posted likely had a re-paint, and could have been painted any way the owner wanted.

Unless the ownership changed, and the new titling state required a HIN (Hull Id #) there likely won't be a HIN anywhere on the boat, as mentioned before, they weren't required until 1972-3 +/-. Some makers started earlier, but probably not pre-1967.

My 18' Holiday does have a data plate near the remote throttle assembly at the helm:

Texas is a state you want to make sure you get title & registration for the boat & trailer. I'm not sure about the motor. They are not messing around w/ inaccurate, non-matching, missing paperwork. Title & reg match the boat's appearance, your good. 1967 or not...

Check w/ whoever handles boats in your state....

Re: 1968 Starcraft 18' or?

I thought it was coincidental that title is for a 1967 and says it is primary white and seconday blue and the paint scheme matches the other 67 blue and white I saw for sale. Maybe coincidence but what are the odds for such a different paint scheme?

There is a title for the boat.
It was last registered in 2008

He also has some type of registration for the motor. I didn't know outboard motors were registered?

I think he lost the registration or title for the trailer, but it does have an old plate on it.

You may need the seller to apply for a lost title, only the person listed on it can. The old plate may help him do that, but probably won't be of any help to you..

But I don't live in Texas, you really need to check w/ the Texas dept that regulates boats & trailers. Possibly motors.

Motors are titled in Texas or at least in the Dallas area they were. I was told it's due to too many outboards being stolen in the past.

Don't know if you have the boat in possession yet, but it may be easiest to walk in to the DMV with the current owner to straighten out the paperwork before you layout the moola.

Re: 1968 Starcraft 18' or?

Well, I now have Holiday in my possession. I picked it up yesterday and have all the titles/papers for Boat, Motor and Trailer.
The title for the boat says it is a 67 Starcraft, ID # on the title is 6110427..
I have heard that the first 2 numbers on the 1960's boats were the year they were made. Could this be a '61 Holiday? I'm not sure what the first year for them is. Then again maybe the number on tag (I can't find on boat) was misread and "7" looked like a "1".
I don't really care but I do have tinny-itis bad!
I think I got a reasonable deal on the package $900. Includes 18' Holiday, 82 Evinrude V4 90hp running and trim is working, a 1967 Lil Dude trailer along with cb radio, compass, fishfinder, in dash radio, anchor, lines, 3 boat bumpers, big ship to shore antenae, rod holders spare 6 gallon plastic fuel tank with fuel line and squeeze bulb and proper fittings. Running lights even work!

Things to do-
Needs a battery,
original 10 gallon long miler metal fuel tank all gummed up maybe junk
Plywood floor marginal and covereded in/out carpeting disintegrating and needs to come out
Splash well carpet needs removal and resurface
Sleeper seats need replacing
Of course the entire hull needs cleaning and repainting

The good news is that once I give the engine a lube change and check, I feel I could put it in the water and go for a cruise.
I'm to anal for that and will check everything out first.
My nick name is Richy and the compass has large logo in front "Ritchie Angler" and even the light in the compass works!

New Tin Head
Under the ether

HOLIDAY ON THE TRAILER.... to be continued
