Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

lol ya i have to keep it clean .. Well black is sounding really good to me now and maybe it will hide some of the imperfections in the hull i have only found one little dent on the bottom other than that the hull is in excellent shape for a 68 .. i will put more pics up soon of all my progress this weekend .. i just got my vacuum sander and cant wait to get it started .. so ZC is the way to go for the primer or so i have read .. is that stuff expensive ? im gonna spend some money on the paint casue i want it to look really nice and not chip off.. foam roller and use the roll tip method ? i dont have a sprayer and im not so good with spray paint ..

Dredog the ZC most of us use comes in a spray can. I think I paid $12.00 for each can, I used 4. I had stripped ALL my paint of though. You only need ZC on bare aluminum areas and just a dusting then. I hate to burst your bubble but black paint is going to show off all imperfections in the boat. White or a light color helps hide them. I think you can roll & tip most paints used by the guys on here.

Black might look good cause there really isnt any inperfections in the hull except for a small dent on the bottom .. Gloss Black i might do the back of the boat and see how i feel about it .. i dont have to do camo on the inside i just thought it would be cool for a fishing boat since thats what im turning it into

Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

This is what i did to my 76 Gregor it was a piece of crap when i got it and turned it into a fishing/ duck hunting Machine .... I think it looks cool and i made custon bench seats and flooring..All i did for the bench seats was i got those bed cones or matress foam topper they were like 6 bucks for a twin size and then fabric that had trout and bass all over from the fabric store wrapped the foam and fabric over the plywood then used clear vinyl and wrapped that to make it waterproof.. turned out nice and only cost me 20 buck total on top of the 20 for the plywood sheet..They were pretty comfortable to sit on too and you could stand on them to fish ... Tell me what u guys think

I agree with V8. That looks good. You did a nice job on that boat, do the same with the other one.

Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

I want to do the new boat different and because its a classic i wanna do it right and paint it really nice. I got that gregor for 100 bucks and spent 200 fixing it up and just recently sold it for 1600 so i can get a big motor for the Starcraft SS .. Any ideas on where to start looking besides Craigslist ? Im starting the sanding process today but am thnking about using a stripper but dont know much about how to use it ? is it a good thing to use or will sanding take it all off ?

Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

Im using zip strip and it works great. I to thought about sanding to bare metal and also thought about just sanding to rough up and zc primer then paint over the old paint I decided to zip strip cause i to want it right and didnt want to take a chance having peeling blistering paint. If you use paint stripper I highly recommend you do a small section at a time. If you get crazy with it you might have to do it 2 times. Good luck!

Dredog check out my thread. I used stripper on mine and it was quicker than sanding and not as dusty. I bought the paste stripper from Wally world and it worked great. I do not reccommend the spray type. You will use more of it and it goes everywhere which is NOT good.

Nice ride! you have there.

I sanded and primed w/ self etching primer. Then primered over that. Mine was pretty rough to start with. I knew I was'nt going to get her perfect.

I did mine in balck. Its has imperfections. More dents and holes than I could ever fix. Never painted before either, so there is some orange peal. But as someone else on this forum told me "No one can see flaws unless they get real close, and thats hard to do at 30+ MPH."

Black is a great color for a Stacraft. I'm biased though;) Keep up the good work!

Dredog, that boat that TGP did is the only black one I have seen done and its Beautiful. Its your boat so do what you want. Personally if you are going to paint it black you should take care of imperfections. Detail-Detail-Detail.
I'm sure its hard to keep clean (ask TGP) but the heads that will turn is worth it.:D:D WOOOHOOO

If the old paint is stuck real good leave it. Just ZC (dusting) over the bare spots and then paint the whole boat with the regular primer. Looking forward to pics!

Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

Can anyone that has the same 16ft Starcraft as me give me the measurements for the deck layout so i dont have a tough time cutting it right.. It would be a big help to have measurements instead of cutting alot of cardboard as templates. Pics are coming tonight after work of my progress on the good ol Starcraft. Im gonna try and paint this weekend and get her flipped back over so i can paint topside and start building my interior.. The seats i ordered are on the way im just waiting for the Gulvit to arrive so i have it ready to go when i flip her over... the guy at home depot gave me that green outdoor carpet for like 8 bucks for a huge roll of it so i could do my trailer bunks with it and picked up some goodies from west marine today cant wait to go home and get busy... Oh and where can you buy pool noodles in bulk like in a box of 20 or something i went to walmart and they sell single for like 1.50 each ??? Thanks guys

Ddog it sounds like you have a busy weekend. If I read you right you want to paint his weekend AND flip it back on the trailer? UMMM no. You should give your paint some time to harden. If not you can scratch it easily or rub it off. Besides, it would hurt your feelings if it stuck to the bunks too. Go to Dollar store or places like that and talk to the manager about the noodles. He/She may give a discount for buying in bulk and get it out of their stock. Your rockin Dude!:D

I have the same rig, albeit a '79, but I'm not sure that you would be able to get the deck cut right just from measurements.

I can give you the length and width of the two aft deck pieces, but the bow is pretty tricky and I didn't get mine perfect...even after my second board. Since it's covered by the bow structure it doesn't really need to be perfect though.

Using cardboard may be the best option, that is what I had to do since I was lacking a good template since my boat had been redone by a previous owner with a casting deck.

I can try to get some measurements to you this weekend.:)

I agree with fshngho, you will want to let that paint cure for a week maybe at least before flipping her back over.
