Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

i used Rust-oleum self etching primer on all bare metal spots and these Pictures are after i primed the boat with rust-oleum all metal primer. stuff covered great and didnt run at all ... Then rolled on Rust-oleum Top Coat in Gloss black ..Had some help from the wife and we got it done in about an hour.. It bubbled at first but layed down after a few minutes and looks fantastic.. im very happy with the way it turned out now it sits for a month which its gonna be hard for me to do nothing on it for a month .. Maybe i will jack it up and crawl under and work lol ... I think the boat looks 100 times better without the Bumper rails im very pleased with how things turned out.. now im waiting on the UPS guy so i can start getting all my goodies i ordered ...

Verrry Nice DD!
That boat looks purtymous. You did a great job and make sure to thank SWMBO. Not too many wives get into the restoration process. And what do you mean you can't do nothing on it for a month? Do you have trim to shine? Wood to cut and seal? Motor to clean and tune? Honeydo's to take care of so youre free when the paint dries?

Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

well i should have cut the wood before i flipped the boat but i didnt .. i will cut the wood after it goes back on the trailer.. fishing season dosent start here till about march Im gonna work on my creeper under the boat and sand some stuff and paint what i can on the inside.. Motor is good to go. Honeydo's done lol and i just ordered a bunch of crap online for the boat. I checked the paint last night and it is getting smooth to the touch. theres one spot on the back where the wife was painting that has a big drip run and it bugs the hell out of me i cant not look at it .. should have kept and eye on her lol ..but its black so you cant notice it from 5 feet away other than that the paint looks fantastic and is curing nicely ..

Looks good, let us know when that Rusto gets good & hard. I found that it took about 10 days to 2 weeks. Your plan to wait a month is a good one I think. Sometimes it's tough to coordinate having the right stuff to work with when you have the time.

Did you say how many coats of paint you used?

i used one heavy top coat under that is the clean metal primer and under that is self etching primer.. i was gonna do a second top coat but it looks really good so im gonna leave it. I think three weeks is plenty of time for this paint after three days its already glossy and smooth..

Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

So here is a better pic of the boat chillen in the garage and a shot of what im doing now TRAILER WORK, and this is a gt steering wheel i got but decided not to use it on my car i like the classic stock wood wheel better so im gonna try and use it for the boat. It wont fit cause the steering system on the boat now is old but functional but the shaft has a little notch on it that only fits the stock wheel how do i rig this or should i invest in a whole new steering system ? any suggestions ? Theres a little rust on the trailer but its pretty solid so far.. was thinkin about painting this black too Murdered out boat n trailer lol What i like about the trailer is that it has full size car tires and it rides the boat level with my truck its not tilted up or down i drove 3 hours on the way home with it and no problems im replacing the bunks, lights, and the 3 rollers in the center.

I covered the boat with plastic painting drop cloths so it dosent collect alot of dust cause where my house is it collects alot of dust so im gonna leave it here like this for 2 more weeks covered and it should be ready to go back on the trailer i should have the trailer done by then. Heres a pic of my garage

Nice job on the Paint! Your prep was Spot ON!!! Your cure time is also correct for Rusto!!! Before the flip give her a COLD water bath that will also aid in the cure and helps to harden the outside film of the paint. Not sure how you plan on flippin her but, if you go to a carpet dealer they can usually supply you with some used carpet pad from a recent tear out. Leave your thin film of painters plastic on and duct tape sevearal layers of the padding on the hull and you can roll her over in the drive way with NO worries.

I'm just sayin...:D

Take the Plastic OFF... let it gas out and dry...IMHO..

Or make sure the cover cloth doesnt touch..blow some fans in the day time on low under your tent thingy..

Paints that take 3 weeks to cure scare me man. Running cold water over your paint to help cure sounds like a Finger Nail Polish trick. Who wants to paint there boats with Finger Nail Paint..

Or I could be wrong .. and this whole post is another waste of time...

GL. but sure does look good ..

Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

Still giving the boat another week or so to cure.. I ended up putting 2 coats of black on it the first coat was light in a few spots. It looks great now. I got my trailer painted new brackets and rollers installed and got the bunks on pics coming tonight. im hoping to put it back on the trailer next weekend so i can get started on the inside. Its all coming together nicely. I had a question so if someone can answer it awesome. What would it take to convert my 15 hp johnson from a tiller to steering cables ? is it expensive or what. I wanna make my other boat able to steer with controls and a wheel instead of sittin at the back manually doing it ? any suggestions would be awesome

i agree .. let it gas out .. don't cover it with a film of plastic . it will never dry .. if you have to . make a make shift tent with firring strips or tear down some 2x4's on a table saw to use to make a tent frame for the plastic. then build a tent over the boat .. and a small fan moving fresh air over the boat will really help the gas evaporate from the paint.

Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

i put that plastic over it for a few days because it was really windy and raining so i had to pull my car in the garage and didnt want rain and dirt getting on the paint plus it had already dried for a week prior to the plastic i wanted it clean so i could put another coat of paint on it.. it was on there for like 3 days no big deal. Second coat is on and it looks great a friend of mine told me to wait a week before the second coat with that paint i used even though on the can it says wait 24 hrs before second coat. He said it will be more solid if i let it air out for a week and after the second coat let it dry for 2 and i should be good to go ..Its so shinny you can see my dogs reflection in the boat ... This is why im so anxious to get the boat done this is what we are catching in the Bay right now 60lb Sea Bass

Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

in the picture of the inside of the boat the two drain plugs at the top had inserts that i had to bend and pop out to get the old wood out.. When i replace the wood what do i replace those holes with ?. I couldnt figure out how they came off without ruining them. they were flared on both ends but now they look like this... Hope someone can give me some info im on pause right now . i got it back on the trailer today and it went on nicely now and i tore out the old transom board any ideas or things i need to do to replace it would be a big help the board that was in there i measured it was 1" 1/2 do i glue two 3/4" together or is there another method im not aware of ? also got my seats and pedastols today was very happy bout that i cant wait for the inside stuff to begin.
