Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

im gonna try and get a coat of primer on it this weekend and paint next weekend i just made it sound like im doing it all this weekend lol .. I got Rust-oleum aluminum primer and decided to only go with that instead of Zc and primer. im getting really anxious to do the inside of the boat. thats gonna be my favorite part i hate sanding and painting it is so time consuming and i dont feel like im being productive but i am .. I got a whole bunch of pics i will put up on here by tonight. Any other suggestions would be great you guys have helped me out alot thanks again ..

Is the Rusto primer you got that weird latex stuff? fshngho just had a real bad experience with it. If it was my boat, I'd hit it with ZC on the bare spots (I was able to find Duplicolor's etching primer in a rattle can at Pep Boys pretty reasonably and you only need a light dusting of it), then Rusto clean metal primer, then Rusto top coat.

I REALLY don't think you want to use that Rusto aluminum primer over any existing paint.

Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

A buddy of mine gave me this 15 hp johnson that is almost brand new his dad used it like 3 times so im thinkin bout using it as a kicker and buy a kicker mount. Im still searching craigslist for a big motor havent had any luck yet... so i should pick up some ZC and shoot that first then the rust-oleum primer ? Whoever owned the boat at some point mounted this 1/2 inch thick aluminum plate on the back that makes it really solid i was thinkin about replacing the wood back there cause its rotted in the corners but the rest of it is solid and this plate makes it really solid so im thinking about leaving it for now.. what do you guys think ?

If she were mine, and I was painting her, I would wash and scrub her good with a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar. Dry her off. Give her a Light Prime of ZC. Let it dry for 24 hours. Light sanding with a Scotch Brite pad, then shoot the Rusto' Primer wait 24 hours, light sanding with scotch brite pad, then shoot the Rusto' paint. Three coats, 24 hours between coats. 4 Weeks for cure. Thin with acetone 15 to 20%

But that's if she were mine.

I'm just sayin...:D

For bare alum... To do it old school days Is only one option.

Alumiprep
Alodine
Zinc chromate
Prime ( recommended primer for your topcoat .. 2 part epoxy is best ).
Sand and prep
Top coat

There is No EZ way that I know of that will be better than this process ( though I dont know the new ways I admit )

There Is a good possibility that with your prep on the old paint that after you wash ZC or whatever prime..your going to have some Lift off alot of your paint featherings.

Meaning..the solvents from whatever is going to lift the paint right off the edges creating a larger problem with spot priming these edges..

If your going to do a full prime ( recommended ) or a spot prime then paint.. your going to run into trouble with some of the feather edges... there going to lift.

Just me though..

Home Depot will take the Rusto back :D I got Duplicolor's etching primer in rattle cans from Pep Boys for $5.99 or something. Do NOT use that latex primer ESPECIALLY over ZC. Fshgho did that and it went horribly wrong. Seriously get rid of that crap.

Re: 1968 Starcraft Super Sport V-16

Dredog don't make me come over there and Gibb Slap you.
Like EZ said, I used ZC and then Rusto Latex primer for aluminum. It all would scratch off if you rubbed it with your eyelashes! Now that was a waste of time and money! Do as EZ suggests.
I know money is tight for everyone but trust me, you DO NOT want to strip and paint that boat twice, exspecially in less than a year.
Good Luck:D
