Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain Restoration

Two Bayliners in one week! Crazy!

Hey, it kinda looks like that Merc is in there real good, does that doghouse surround come off or are you going to have to cut it out?

Nice work!

It pulls right off. If all the bolts come out in one piece Ill have that engine out in less than an hour.

Im pretty stoked I got a new engine and drive for my project this early in the game and I didn't have to travel very far or break the bank to get it...

Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain Restoration

i just started reading this restoration. i'm loving it. though i've only started to restore one fiberglass boat http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=329514

anyway, i wanted to make a suggestion, or kind of rather ask a question concerning the paint.

would using a heat gun be out of the question? i have never seen a heat gun fail on paint, no matter how thick. though, my heat gun excursions on marine paint are minimal.

and so this is my question/suggestion. heat gun. bad idea?

Baylinner Murderer Baylinner Murderer :D Im just ribbin you man. I could not stand to junk them But for your needs you would be foolish not to. I have put many cars to death that could be saved but they were bought for the purpose of getting the parts I wanted from them. Hope that 4.3 sounds like a new one. Great work on that patch. I feel sorry for you having to put that in WOW what a bunch of rivets. I sure wish deals like that were around here People here want 1000 bucks for a turd with the hull and engine shot to crud. Happy holidays man. And again I was just joking around. But when I need anew project I am coming to your house:D

I'm with ya Alpheus. I'm about 1 1/2 hrs away from you and I have been to Newport News to gut a neglected FG boat for the parts I wanted. Ton of stuff for my time and $75., well worth the trip. It is a shame but all of us have seen people being stupid with their boats and are too lazy to take care of them. Then we step in......
Great score again.

Nice work on parting out of the old boats. Don't have the same options around here.

It would be fun treasure hunting...

Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain Restoration

I got back from my Christmas trip Yesterday and to my surprise there is snow everywhere. When I moved here to VA I was told that winters where mild and that it hardly ever snows. Well for the last 2 years I have been here it has snowed more than it has in PA.

I got to work tonight by starting to strip the Bayliner I bought last week. I took off the engine cover and I found an Edelbrock carb!!! The owner said He had put on a new carb, but I was expecting a Rochester. I got to looking at the new carb and realized that I cant use it and will have to look around for a deal on another one. Can you tell why???

I then shoveled the snow out of the Bayliner and got to removing the engine. It took a little longer than normal because it was cold out. After about 2 hours I had it sitting in my garage.

I will get the rest of this boat stripped out tomorrow...

Wow that is lots of snow for virginny:eek:

I'm curious...do you really have a brick fireplace in your garage? Man I am jealous. That would be a great setup to have.

Hope you enjoyed you time off, I'd imagine if you get back on pace you will have this done by early February:D:D

Yep. I use the heck out of it in the winter time. I use pallets that I get from work for fuel. Free heat...

We have gotten NO snow to speak of here in central PA yet. Thought we'd get hit with this last storm and I readied the snowblower but it totally missed us.

Do you see all of the caps on the vacuum ports? That means the carb is for an automobile and is 100% illegal for marine use. Some guy at the parts store probably told the PO that they are all the same.A true Edelbrock 1409 carb has no vacuum ports. Actually there are alot of differences between the marine and auto carb but that one is the easiest to spot. That should be one of the first thinks you look at when buying a used boat with an I/O...

Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain Restoration

After I pulled the engine from the Bayliner I figured I would get it fired up, but before I do so I would run a compression check. All of the cylinders where pushing close to 150psi except for one. I then did a leak down test and found that I had a leak in the #1 exhaust valve. I pulled the valve covers and found a stuck valve. So I tore down the whole engine.

Here is the culprit.

I called my local machine shop and got a quote to have my heads redone. I got a quote of 110 bucks for a complete overhaul. I then started perusing Craigslist and found a set of 99 Vortec heads for 100 bucks. I went ahead and bought the Vortecs. I figured that an extra 25 HP on the old tinny isnt gonna hurt anything. I will have to buy a new intake manifold to match the heads but the old one isnt that great anyway. I am going to magna flux and perform a dye penetrating test on the Vortecs tomorrow at work, but Im sure they will be fine. They are in great shape...

Its just fighting you because you killed a Baylinner. Sorry about the heads dude. I remember an article about converting automotive carbs for marine use but I dont remember where I found it. Might be an option for the Edelbrock Happy new year man

Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain Restoration

Today I did a little work on installing the patch. I got the hole cut out for the new style outdrive and got the bottom 4 holes lined up. Now I have a perfect template of the material I have to remove and the 4 new holes I have to drill. I also made a hole for the drain plug to stick through. I just have it temporarily installed with some clecos for now. I need to lift the back of the boat up a little so I can mark the bottom of the patch on where to trim it up...

On a competly different note.

I heard that Mercruisers were junk and that OMC Stringer drives are the cats AZZ. I went ahead and cut that Mercruiser drive out of my Bayliner and I am looking for a stringer drive to bolt in there...

I was actually thinking about using my Wifes user name and making a new post of that just to see the responses. I might do it over on the Bayliner Owners club forum..:)

OMC Stringers are beautiful!

Just look at how graceful this one is as it flies away, off into the sunset, never to be seen again...
