Re: 1970 Starcraft Mariner Restoration

I love that boat, the 16ft Starcrafts are great for small lakes and rivers. You will be very happy when you launch her into shallow waters.

I've floated mine in less than 2' of water on multiple occasions, just trim the motor up:)

The open layout will be great for fishing, I would love to restore a Mariner someday:D

Thanks for your support guys. I'm going to start painting the boat this weekend. It will take a couple weeks as the paint has to properly cure to allow for masking.

Re: 1970 Starcraft Mariner Restoration

Hey Guys, Here's the rundown for paint. Tonight we're taking the boat into the shop where we'll acid wash it before the primer. We figured we'd do this because it's available and it will allow the primer to stick better. Another advantage to this paint is that it's made for aluminum livestock trailers so it's tough. After the primer is on we're going to put on the white just on the bottom side. We're taking it in multiple steps because this paint is quite thick and it has to properly cure before masking can be done. Getting pretty excited. :D

Re: 1970 Starcraft Mariner Restoration

Well, Today was a really good day. Started at 430am getting the boat primed. It went extremely well. We then put the topcoat on the bottom side and that went even better. After we were done spraying I figured I'd run to Lowe's to get some stuff for the boat and halfway there my truck died. I pulled over and tried to start it and all she did was turn over. I knew right away it was the darn fuel pump. If you've ever owned an 88-98 Chevy truck you probably have ran into this problem. We've had 3 different trucks with 2 fuel pumps a piece...Oh well, like my dad says it could always be alot worse.

That sure is looking great. If I read correctly, you put Gluvit on the outside of the hull as well. Did you sand the gluvit once dried or just prime right over it? How does it look after coating it? I am considering doing the same and have yet to see someone use it in that way. Keep up the great work.

Yes we put gluvit on the outside too. All we did was rough it up a bit with 220 grit paper then primed it. No sanding after the primer either.

Just curious why you used the Gluvit on the outside of the hull especially since you had access to the inside of the hull. Most of the guys on here that have inside access apply it to all the crevices and seams on the inside. Not sayin it hasn't been done before, just curious.

I'm just sayin...:D

My answer; Why Not? We did it on the inside too by the way.

I am very interested to see your final result. I believe that I am going to do just what you did as well.

Here's the rest of the pictures. I'm really happy with the results. The chrome stuff looks great with the red.

Looks Great! Mine is going to be red and white as well. I am going to stick with the original style with the "swoosh" or hockey stick on the side.
