Re: 1970 Starcraft Mariner Restoration

Hey guys,
This probably isn't very relevant but this is why the boat progress has been so slow. In December I hit a tiny clearance pole with my truck, it would've been a pretty costly fix. Luckily my Dad is more than "savy" when it comes to paint and body work, so me and him fixed the mess ourselves. After the body work was done we decided the heck with it, let's paint it. So I spent a few weeks sanding it then my dad and I painted it this weekend. I think when I'm towing the boat it should turn heads. Last of all, I just want to say thanks to all you guys here at IBoats for the motivation, positive criticism, and ideas. This forum has made the whole restoration process a lot more fun!

Awesome! Looks great. I have a rust-free 1990 with a newer 350 in it. I also upgraded to newer alloys wheels as it looks like you may have done. Unfortunately mine was damaged in a hail storm last year. It's not bad but it's annoying. I was going to get it fixed and painted but when it came down to actually spending the money, it just didn't see worth it. Still love the truck though.

Wow WCI, nice job on the truck. Hopefully it'll inspire you to finish the boat! Cheers,

Thanks guys. ;)
@EZ, The wheels are stock but the truck is a Z71 so that could explain it. Gotta love these old Chevy's. We've had 3 with over 200k on them and they just don't stop! :D

Hey Guys!
I've had the boat a few times since my last post and it's worked like a champ...only one problem.
I knew I would run into this issue but it should be easy to fix. My motor is a short shaft so it runs out of the water when it I get it going a little bit. No problem, this weekend my Dad and I are going to build a jackplate to lower the motor 4-5 inches. It's pretty much a win-win because if I decide to get a bigger motor in the future I won't have to worry about getting a long shaft.
I'll post pictures of the final product.
Until Next Time!

Where to begin....

Well guys, the boat shall finally be done in the spring of 2012. I hadn't planned for it to be such a
long project but I picked an awful busy time in my life to restore a boat. Football is finally done and I'm a senior this year so there'll doubtfully be any more football. We went 9-2, 2nd round qualifiers, broke all kinds of records....good deal. As for now I'm working and going to school, so again not much time for the boat. I'll keep you guys updated!

Re: 1970 Starcraft Mariner Restoration

Just a quick update fellas. I aquired a flatbottom from a friend who asked for me to turn it in to a duck boat. I've been working on that in my free time and once I paint it Im done with it. Now about the starcraft... Santa was pretty awesome this year and got me a couple seats and pedestals. I got those put in today and I'll put pictures up tomorrow as I have no homework. I think in the spring Im going to build a carpeted box for the gas tank, battery, switches, and the depth finder. I want to add a livewell and would like to keep it simple. I plan on building a box, carpet it and then insert some sort of tub or well. I've been having trouble finding what Im looking for. Some help would be nice. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention the 5-hour 25 horse Johnson that I picked up for free. God must be looking out for me. Thanks guys.

Tiller seat placement. I wanted more strength and stability so I attached the pedestal to a 1 foot square sheet of 1/4 aluminum with countersunk hucks. I then fastened the sheet of aluminum to the deck; using monobolts for the tiller seat and lag screws for the casting deck because that one is made of wood.
